MODAFLOW®..reduces coating time, promotes leveling If you are coating metals with hard- to-control resin films, Modaflow may be able to speed up your coating rate and improve your film. Just 0.10-2.0% Modaflow (based on solids) in vinyl, epoxy, phenolic, modified alkyd, and polyester coatings promotes even flow- on, more uniform film thickness, smoother finishes, and faster cure. Modaflow in vinyl coatings for alum- inum promotes leveling, makes the control of flow easier, and eliminates bubbles and pin holing. For dip, spin, spray, roll-on or even brush coatings, the handling properties and applica- tion performance can be tailored to the resin and the use by stepwise addition of increasing increments of Modaflow added to the coating formulation. Modaflow (as a coating resin modifier) has been included in the FDA list of substances approved for resinous and polymeric coatings for lining food containers. ORTHO-BENZYL-PARA-CHLORO- PHENOL... a new route to complex molecules Viewing this highly germicidal com- pound from the organic synthesis viewpoint—it is better described as 2-hydroxy - 5 - chlorodiphenylmethane. This is the clue to the tremendous possibilities it offers for molecular manipulations, with multiple reaction sites added to an unusual substitution in the chlorophenol structure. How many substituted diphenylmethanes does the organic chemist even have available commercially? Viewed as a phenol, certain select condensation re- actions are possible since only one ortho site is available. With 2-hydroxy- 5-chlorodiphenylmethane, substi- tutions are available at several sites on both aromatic rings. As a multiple ring aromatic, it offers possibilities for chlorination, nitration, sulfonation, chloromethylation, alkylation. HB-40®.. high-temperature, nonboiling, reusable solvent HB-40 is a nonevaporating, partially hydrogenated terphenyl. It is a mobile liquid at room temperature that won't boil until it reaches a temperature over 340°C. This high boiling liquid is an amazing cleaning agent. It will "flush out" waxes, pitches, oxidized metal scale. It can dissolve away plasties films or resin coatings. HB-40 has shown itself to be an "extraordinary" remover of all kinds of stubborn scale and coatings. From cleaning corroded metal pipes and tanks to removing resin and wax drum linings, HB-40 can cut "cleaning out" time dras- tically. It is virtually noncorrosive and nonvolatile; has only faint odor,, is mild to the skin, and virtually non- toxic. At high temperatures, HB-40 physically dislodges hard-to-clean scale, waxes, resins, and pitches from metal surfaces; can save time and do a better job on all container, pipe, metal reclaiming, and equipment maintenance. THERMINOL FR?..safe processing heat at less cost New fire-resistant Therminol FR heat transfer fluids deliver safe process heat up to 600°F. as a liquid flowing through nonpressurized delivery systems. From specially designed heaters that can operate on gas, oil, or electricity, process heat up to 10,000,000 BTU/hr. can be delivered to multiple use stations, each operating at its own temperature. The fire-resistant Therminol FR fluids are the only heat transfer liquids listed by Underwriters' Laboratories. They are thermally and chemically stable, and noncorrosive. They deliver even heat, controllable to within 2°F. Because the systems are nonpressurized, they require no licensed engineer for operation in most states and a minimum of "safety devices." Therminol fluids in properly designed heaters and distribution systems will last indefinitely; require negligible make-up; need no conditioning treatment. Heaters of standard design for Therminol are readily available in sizes ranging from small electrical heaters to giant multi-million BTU/hr. gas or oil fired units. A single hea te r can serve many different use points. Monsanto can assist you in contacting a system designer or guide you in designing your own distribution system. Therminol FR is the new way to deliver even, controllable process heat, safely, at lowest cost per year.

SULFONAMIDES... to put flex in hard-to-plasticize nylon Santicizer® 1-H, 3, 8, 9 and Santolite® M HP and MS-80 are a series of sulfonamide plasticizers that can modify the properties of nylon compositions. These plasticizers that are compatible with polyamide resins can make easier-worked molding compounds, extrusions, castings, and coatings and can improve the properties of the end product application. The selection of the plasticizer and the amount used will depend upon the application; each plasticizer offers a somewhat different kind of utility. Santolite MS-80, for example, imparts low temperature flexibility and improved impact resistance, particularly useful in formulations where carbon black or fillers are used which alter the physical properties in the opposite direction. Among these six, however, you will find the one most suitable for use in nylon compounds to mold bushings, gears, gasketing; for brist les, castings, paints; and for oil-resistant nylon coatings for fabric and paper.

PARA-TOLUENESULFONYL CHLORIDE...a highly pure, low cost starting point for complex chemicals Highly reactive PTSC makes an excellent sweetener for sour crude oils, yet the broad-scale usefulness of its extreme reactivity has barely been scratched. While established for its use in making phenolic and furan resins and for preparing azo dyes, the undeveloped potential of PTSC for efficiently deriving complex molecules is astonishing. It reacts with amines, alcohols, hydroxylamines, phenols, ni-trolic acids, nitroamines, organometal compounds, hydrazine, and salts of organic acids. Zinc or iron in mineral acid reduces PTSC completely to p-thiocresol. It can form products with tertiary bases, such as trimethylamine, pyridine, α-picoline, quinoline, and antipyrine. With its purity and reactivity, PTSC offers a network of highways to new processes and products.

MONEY-SAYING PROCESSING "TRICKS" The cost of manufacturing is more critical today than ever before. Eliminate one processing step; raise yield a few percent higher; save fifteen minutes a day—any one of these can mean improved profits.

In the chemical processing field—astute management, sharp-eyed operating engineers, and quality-sensitive technologists are developing new "tricks of the t rade" to cut processing costs. Many of these money-saving ideas grow out of applications of Monsanto products.

Check over the six shown here to see if these can help you cut costs of processing —or reduce the ratio of the conversion costs to product value by improving the finished product performance. If so, more information and test samples are available on request. Just return the coupon.

However, if you have a special need in your particular manufacturing, jot it down on your letterhead and mail to: Monsanto Chemical Company, Task Force Chemicals, St. Louis 66, Mo.
