THE FACTS One in six households in Louisiana are at risk of hunger. They are children, seniors and families; they are neighbors, co-workers and friends. Across our state and region, the rising cost of food, housing and utilities, coupled with high unemployment, low-wage jobs and foreclosure rates have increased the need for emergency food assistance. Many individuals are asking for help for the first time. When bills loom and impossible decisions must be made, grocery lists are often cut first. Meals are skipped. Parents go without to make sure their children are fed.

Second Harvest serves as the heart of a regional network of more than 300 partner agencies across south Louisiana, which is home to some of the most poverty-stricken communities in the United States. Through this network, they are strategically positioned to lead the fight against hunger and build long-term food security by providing food access, advocacy, education and disaster response to those in need in our area.
