It has been my privilege to serve as your Associational Missionary for a span of over 17 years. In traveling among the congregations of both Morehouse and Northeast associations, I am often asked, “Just what is the association,

what does it do, why do we have an association?” I find great joy and satisfaction in answering such questions. A thorough understanding of the local Baptist Association involves knowledge of its purpose, which is to assist churches in making the name of Christ known to all peoples. The way that the Association carries out this biblical directive is primarily by assisting the local church, whose significance gives value to the local Association. The Association is not a stand-alone entity but exists alongside and never apart from the local church. One of the many roles of the associa-tion is to discover needs that cannot be met effectively by churches individually. The Baptist Association is a voluntary organization. Baptist churches willingly seek to join with other Baptist churches for the purpose of prayer, evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, training, and missions. The primary feature of the local Baptist Association is its spiritual life, not its organizational structure. God graciously created each of us as a social being, and as such we love to congregate, associate, and fellowship. It is a natural process of being a part of a Christian community. Southern Baptist Churches have and always will voluntarily interact with each other. This collective activity is a powerful force that has the potential of bringing glory to God, encouragement to Christians, and expansion to God’s Kingdom on Earth. Further, the local Baptist Association is a support system for the churches, pastors, other ministers, and congregations in general. It is a functional entity that has the local church as its focus. Additionally, the association is designed to equip, assist, motivate, and empower local churches to give birth to new congregations. Churches start new churches and can do so more effectively and efficiently as they utilize the resources and people power provided through the local Association. Participating churches not only give part of their resources to the Association, but they give through the Association. The support given by the churches to the Association allows every member church to have the opportunity to participate in ministries and have greater Kingdom impact than would be possible if they attempted to go it alone. Thank you for your generous, continued support of

associational missions.
