Monotone complete algebras and generic dynamics

This talk is on joint work with Kazuyuki SAITÔ.

I shall begin by talking about Monotone Complete C*-algebras.

Then I will give a brief introduction to Generic Dynamics and its closeconnection to MCAs.

Definition: Monotone complete C*-algebras

Let A be a C ∗-algebra. Its self-adjoint part, Asa, is a partially ordered,real Banach space whose positive cone is zz∗ : z ∈ A.

If each upward directed, norm-bounded subset of Asa, has a leastupper bound then A is said to be monotone complete.

Each monotone complete C ∗-algebra has a unit element (this followsby considering approximate units). Unless we specify otherwise, allC ∗-algebras considered will possess a unit element.

Every von Neumann algebra is monotone complete but the converse isfalse.

commutative algebras

When a monotone complete C ∗-algebra is commutative, its lattice ofprojections is a complete Boolean algebra. Up to isomorphism, everycomplete Boolean algebra arises in this way.

Let C (X ) be a commutative (unital) C ∗-algebra Then C (X ) ismonotone complete precisely when the compact Hausdorff space X isextremally disconnected, that is, the closure of each open subset of Xis also open.

factors

An MCA is a factor if its centre is one dimensional; factors are as farremoved as possible from being commutative.

Just as for von Neumann algebras, each monotone complete factor isof Type I or Type II1or Type II∞,or Type III.

Each Type I factor is a von Neumann algebra (Kaplansky). Is everyfactor von Neuamann?

The answer is "no", in general. We call a factor which is not a vonNeumann algebra wild.

separably representable

A C ∗-algebra B is separably representable when there existsπ : B → L(H) where H is a separable Hilbert space and π is anisometric ∗-homomorphism.

If a monotone complete factor is separably representable (as aC ∗-algebra) then it is a von Neumann algebra (Wright).

So, in these circumstances, Kaplansky’s question has a positiveanswer.

Each C ∗-algebra A can be embedded in its "regular σ−completion"A. (Wright)

This is analagous to constructing R from Q by using Dedekind cuts.

When A is separably representable then A is monotone complete andalmost separably representable.

Furthermore, when A is infinite dimensional, unital and simple, then Ais a wild factor.

classification semi-group

A classification semi-group W.can be constructed for monotonecomplete C ∗-algebras.of bounded cardinality. (Saitô & Wright 2007) .

This semi-group is abelian, partially ordered, and has the Rieszdecomposition property. In particular, for each monotone complete, small C ∗-algebra A we assign a "normality weight", w(A) ∈ W .When A is a von Neumann algebra w(A) is the zero element of thesemi-group.

Let c = 2ℵ0 . Then there are 2c small monotone complete factorswhose normality weights are all distinct.

APPENDIX: Monotone complete C*-algebras and genericdynamics (JDM Wright)

The survey article [1] gives a birds eye view of classifying monotone completeC*-algebras. In particular it describes the spectroid invariant for monotonecomplete algebras (there was insu¢ cient time to do this in my talk). Full detailsof the classication are given in [2].Just as the spectrum is a set which encodes information about an operator,

the spectroid encodes information about a monotone complete C*-algebra. Sinceequivalent algebras have the same spectroid, it is an invariant for members ofthe classication semi-group. All this can be generalised to much more generalpartially ordered sets.Generic dynamics for actions of countable groups on complete separable met-

ric spaces were introduced in [3] and a strong uniqueness theorem was proved. The survey by Weiss [4] contains much more. The recent paper [6] gives details of all generic dynamics results mentioned

in this talk.Imagine a city in which each building contains a small monotone complete

C*-algebra, where algebras in di¤erent buildings are never isomorphic. Then byHamanas marvellous breakthrough [5] we can suppose there are 2R buildings. In [2] we nd the city can be organised into 2R avenues; each avenue is named byan element of the classication semigroup. The zero avenue is the one where thevon Neumann algebras live. There is much to do before we can give a completemap of the city. But [2] brings some order out of chaos. The work of [6] shows that generic dynamics can be applied to the con-

struction of huge numbers of wild factors. In particular if we require that eachalgebra in our city is a small hypernite factor we still get 2R elements in theclassication semi-group.
