Airship scaffold

Monospace describes a one-room typology, which is not defined by a particular cultural or historical development or by a precise programming, but by specific spatial characteristics.

The one-room typology can be found both in some of the most archaic buildings, i.e. tents or yurts, where it served as a community shelter, but also in industrial buildings such as warehouses and assembly plants and in cultural buildings, sports facilities and churches.

Common to all those buildings is their autonomous shell with a structure allowing a flexible use of interior space. The internal spatial structure is disconnected from the outer shell which enables the enclosed space to be programmed in thousands of different ways.

The task for the bachelor thesis is to search new concepts of monospace buildings, new interpretations of the theme in the context of today’s city.

The precise program or a possible programming of the monospace is part of the task and should be developed according to the program of the surrounding – the monospace building thus getting programmatic and spatial extension of the surrounding facilities.

One of the basic requirements for the functionality of a monospace building is the facade, the access and inner organization. Where are the entrances? Is there one entrance or are there 20? Does the space have columns or is it columns-free? Which elements are mobile and what function do they have? Is there a possibility of multiple uses?

Following themes are essential for the design of a monospace building and should be deepened during the design phase: inside | outside; public | privacy; continuity | barrier.

Students should develop their own design through an experimental design process, in variants and with models. The project size should not exceed 2.500 m².

Ernst-Reuter-Platz, 1968

Our test-site is situated on Ernst-Reuter-Platz, the round-about adjacent to our architecture building. The green traffic island has a diameter of 130 m.

The square was originally only a kink in the main baroque axis between Stadtschloss and Charlottenburg Palace.Today's shape is the result of a competition in 1955 to redesign the Ernst-Reuter-Platz which had been destroyed in the Second World War. Bernhard Hermkes and Werner Düttmann designed a huge traffic square with office buildings around a central green island. This arrangement relies on an idea Mies proposed in the 20s for the Alexanderplatz. He developed a free and open space, a traffic square surrounded by loosely grouped individual buildings which are not directly enclosing the square. Admired for its modernity, the Ernst-Reuter-Platz is now considered an example of a car-friendly "non-place".The square also was developed as counterpoint to the Straussberger Platz in East Berlin which was much more enclosed.

Even before the transformation of the Ernst-Reuter-Platz the Institute of Mining was built by Willy Kreuer in 1955 at the south-east of the square. In 1956/1957 Bernhard Hermkes then developed the "Osramhaus" (today Teles) which is situated at the north-western part. In 1960 Gustav Müller and Franz Heinrich Sobotka designed the building (Gravis) parallel to the Teles building and Paul Schwebes and Hans Schoszberger their prominent Telefunken building (Telekom) with a shape relying on proportions of Milan’s Pirelli-building. On the south, buildings for IBM and Raiffeisen (tele columbus) were built by Rolf Gutbrod and Hans Gerber with Otto Risse in 1972 and in 1975 the office building leading over to Bismarckstrasse by Bernhard Binder. Finally, on the northern part our architecture faculty was designed by Bernhard Hermkes in 1968 with an annex by Hans Scharoun in 1970.

Start: Friday, October 21, 10am, room A814, obligatoryWorkshop: October 21-28Field trip: NovemberPresentation: February 16

RegistrationFor registration, please submit the application for admission to the Bachelor's examination to the examination office. Please indicate the chosen subject / chair. Registrations will be forwarded to the corresponding chair. If there is an imbalance between the chairs, we will need to draw lots. The announcement of the final distribution will be posted on a list at our chair, room A 911.

ReleaseThe topic of the bachelor thesis will be presented by the departments at the beginning of the semester.

Design processThe bachelor thesis should be developed independently with scientific and technical methods. The design should be developed conceptionally, in plans, sections and elevations with a focus on its construction, i.e. facade / shell. The bachelor thesis can be developed alone or in pairs.

You will have 14 weeks for developing your bachelor thesis. In the beginning, we will introduce you to the main aspects of monospace buildings and its specific problems, so that you get familiar with the theme. The process of the design will be structured in two parts: First you will do investigations on buildings, structures and techniques related to our theme. In a second step we want you to experiment with models and to develop then a new monospace from the scale 1:10.000 up to 1:200. All perspectives have to be done on the basis of model pictures.

ExcursionWe will visit the site and several examples of monospace buildings in Berlin at the beginning and during the design process.

WorkshopsThere will be 3 obligatory pin-ups between release and presentation where students show their intermediate design progress.

CooperationFor all questions concerning building construction we strongly recommend consulting the chair of building construction of Prof. Klaus Rückert.

Team PhilosophyAlthough you might work in small groups of three people, we consider all members of the bachelor thesis together with us at LIA being one big research team.

Studio A 814To accomplish the best results in a relatively short time period of 14 weeks, it is absolutely necessary that you work in the studio in room A 814. Only then synergies of working side by side are used effectively for the final step of the bachelor's degree. You can obtain a key for the studio and the lockers from our tutors.
