ulti mate desktop monitoring and communicati ons system for your recording studio. Based on the award-winning
Central Station, the M onitor Station provides talkback, speaker switching, input source switching and four ultra
loud and clear headphone ampli fi ers to deliver everything you need to control your recording environment.

1.2 FEATURES
T he M onitor Station is the ulti mate studio control center complete with everything needed for real-world,
modern studio applications. T he M onitor Stati on comes complete with a bui lt-in talkback mic, three source
inputs, three speaker outputs, four headphone ampli fi ers and control over the routing and level of every element
connected to the M onitor Station – effecti vely givi ng you complete control over your entire studio environment.
I ts stereo inputs are ready to accommodate virtually any input sources – such as Digital Audio Workstations
( DAWs) , analogue and digi tal mixing consoles, CD players, DJ T urntables, etc. Each of the fi ve inputs features
indivi dual monitoring, which means you can quickly and easily toggle between them for a quick compari son or
reference. T he M onitor Stati on’s three stereo outputs with individual Speaker L evel A djust knobs and M aster
M ute, D im, M ono and Level controls allow you to connect three sets of reference monitors and easi ly compare
your mix on each of them. T he four headphone ampli fi er outputs with indivi dual source and level controls give
you the abili ty to feed custom headphone mixes to you or any of the arti sts in your studio. A ll this combined

2.1 QUI CK START
T he M onitor Station Quick Start guide was written to help get your M onitor Station connected to your system as
quickly as possible. T he fol lowing step-by-step instructi ons are based on a common studio envi ronment. Y our
actual setup may change based on your needs and applicati ons.
2.1.1 Connect the power
Before connecting any power supply to the Monitor Station, ensure the power supply meets the inputvoltage requirements of the region or country you are using it in. PreSonus only supports the power supplyshipped along with your Monitor Station. If it does not meet your requirements or you wish to purchase anadditional power supply, please contact your local dealer or distributor.
1) “ Zero” the M ain, Cue and P hones level knobs by turning them fully counterclockwise.
I f you have speakers or gear connected to the M ain L/R outputs, you should also Zero them.
2) Ensure the power switch is set to the ‘OFF’ positi on ( O down = off ) .
3) Connect the included power supply to the M onitor Station’s power input connector and to the
appropriate wall socket.
4) Flip the power switch to the ‘ON ’ position ( | down = on ) .
2.1 .2 Connect the input sources
1) “ Zero” the M ain, Cue and P hones level knobs by turning them fully counterclockwise.
2) Connect your pri mary audio source ( such as a DAW or M ixer M ain Outputs) to the Left and Right
T RS i nputs of ST 1 on the back of your M onitor Station.
3) [ Optional]: Connect your secondary audio source ( such as a CD or mp3 player) or cue audio source
( such as the auxi li ary outputs of your interface or M ixer) to the Left and Right T RS inputs of ST 2
on the back of your M onitor Station.
4) [ Optional]: Connect another secondary or Cue audio source or a DJ turntable to the Left and R ight
RCA inputs of Aux/P hono.

2.1.3 Calibrate the LED meter
By default, the M onitor Station’s L ED meters are calibrated so the red 0 dBVU LED i lluminates when the
selected source signals reach +10 dBu. T his can be changed so that 0 dBVU references +4, +10 or + 18 dBu.
+4 dBu
0 dBVU should reference +4 dBu if any of your monitoring devices have a maxi mum input of +4 dBu or if
none of your input devices have a maximum ( or nominal) output level greater than +4 dBu.
1) P ress and hold the Cue Source ST 1 button whi le poweri ng on your M onitor Station.
+10 dBu
0 dBV U should reference +10 dBu i f any of your monitori ng devices have a maxi mum input of + 10 dBu or i f
none of your input devices have a maximum ( or nominal) output level greater than +10 dBu.
1) P ress and hold the Cue Source ST 2 button whi le poweri ng on your M onitor Station.
+18 dBu
0 dBV U should reference +18 dBu i f any of your monitori ng devices have a maxi mum input of + 18 dBu or i f
none of your input devices have a maximum ( or nominal) output level greater than +18 dBu.
1) P ress and hold the Cue Source Aux button while poweri ng on your M onitor Station.
2.1.4 Calibrate the input sources
1) “ Zero” the M ain, Cue and P hones level knobs by turning them fully counterclockwise.
2) T urn the outputs of your pri mary audio source ( connected to ST 1) to their lowest setting.
3) Remove all effects processors ( i .e. E Qs, compressors, reverbs, etc.) from the signal path and play a
clean 0 dB test tone ( i .e., a 1 kHz sine wave) through the outputs of your primary audio source.
Select only ST 1 as the M ain Source, and begin turning up the outputs of your primary audio source
to their U nity Gain setting or until the M onitor Station’s LED meter’s red 0 dBVU LED comes on.
I f you are not able to reach Unity Gain (or very close to it) without the red 0 dBV U LED coming
on, ensure you have properly calibrated the LED meter ( section 2.1. 3 ) then repeat this step.
“ Unity Gain” is the level or setting which does not boost or attenuate the signal level and is usually
marked by a “ 0” on the audio device’s level fader or knob. I n many digi tal i nterfaces and digi tal
devices, its maximum level i s often also its Unity Gai n setting. P lease consult your audio device’s
user’ s manual or manufacturer’s Website for more informati on on i ts levels and adjustments.
[ Aux/P hono only] : Do not adjust the output level of your audio device i f i t is set at i ts optimum or
maximum level. I nstead, engage the P hono preamp ( if necessary) and increase the Aux I nput L evel
knob starting from -80 unti l the red 0 dBV U LED meter just comes on ( and no higher) .
4) Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the secondary / cue audio sources connected to ST 1 and A ux/P hono.

2.1 .5 Connect the speakers
1) “ Zero” the M ain level knob by turning i t fully counterclockwise.
2) Connect your primary monitoring system ( such as a pair of nearfi eld reference monitors) to the Left
and R ight outputs of Speaker A .
3) [ Optional]: Connect your secondary monitoring system ( such as a pair of reference monitors of a
dif ferent make or model) to the L eft and Right outputs of Speaker B .
4) [ Optional]: Connect another secondary monitor ing system ( such as a pair of large studio monitors
or subwoofer) to the Left and R ight outputs of Speaker C .
2.1.6 Calibrate your speaker levels
T he essenti al purpose of speaker cali bration is to ensure a specific metered audio level ( typically 0 dBVU )equals a certai n acousti c level ( measured in dB SP L ) in your studio environment. Depending upon the
method and reference levels used during cali brati on, proper calibrati on can help reduce unwanted noise,
minimize the risk of damage to your speaker cones and to your ears, maximize the reference capabili ti es of
different speaker types and ensure you and/or your listeners are hearing the audio as the engineer intended.
T here are many different methods for cali brati ng studio monitors. T he methods discussed here should not be
mi sconstrued as the only method or even the best method, because different studio environments with
different gear, clientele and audio mixes may ultimately benefi t more from one of the many other methods
avai lable. P reSonus does not suggest the cali brati on methods provided here are in any way the best or only
recommended methods of calibration when using the M onitor Station. I f you wish to calibrate your studio
monitors using a different method, we encourage you to do so.
Every calibrati on method has something in common, though: test tones. T he most commonly used test tones
are 100 Hz, 1 kHz and 10 kH z sine waves, 40-80 Hz and 500 Hz -2.5 kHz bandwidth-limited pink noise and
20 H z - 20 kHz pink noise and white noise. T est tone CDs can be purchased from your local electronics or
entertai nment retai ler or downloaded off the I nternet from a vari ety of free Websites for use in many
calibration and testi ng procedures. As a less technical, more subjecti ve and not otherwise ideal alternati ve,
the chorus of a modern commercial Rock song can be substi tuted for full-bandwidth pink noise.
When cali brating reference monitors in a studio, the acousti c level or sound pressure level ( SP L ) should be
measured from the mix positi on at seated ear height. T he SP L meter should be held at arms’ length with the
microphone pointed at the center point between the left and ri ght speakers, angled at 45 degrees to ensure an
accurate reading. Y ou should also cali brate the left and right monitors independently; pan the test tone hard
left, cali brate the left monitor, then repeat for the right channel.
When monitoring systems are calibrated using the same method, each system should generate the same
acousti c level when given the same input source. T his is especially important when referencing your mix on
different monitoring systems ( such as toggling between Speaker A and Speaker B for compari son) , because
in an incorrectly calibrated studio, the acousti c level will “ jump” when toggling the different systems.
( For example, when cali brated properly, playing an audio through Speaker A then turning Speaker A ‘OFF’
and Speaker B ‘ON ’ should not cause a change in level – though it may result in a sli ght tonal var iance due to
the dif ferent acousti c properties of the monitori ng systems.)

Maximum Loudness Reference
T his method references a 0 dB VU meter reading to the loudest level you or your studio can handle or desire.
T his is the least technical, most subjecti ve method and is good for environments where there is such a thing as
“ too loud” ( i .e. an apartment, school, OSHA-regulated venue, etc.) or when a certain level of “ louder” needsto be attainable ( i .e. for entertaining guests at parties, clubs, li ve venues, etc.) .
1) “ Zero” the Speaker, M ain, Cue and P hones levels by turning them fully counterclockwise.
2) Select only the ST 1 M ain Source and Speaker A selections.
3) T urn your primary monitoring system (connected to ST 1) input level to its lowest setting. On many
powered monitors, this is the “ I nput Sensiti vity” . Consult your monitor system’s user’s manuals or
manufacturers’ Websites for more informati on about adjusting the input or ampli fi cation level.
4) Remove all effects processors ( i .e. E Qs, compressors, reverbs, etc.) from the signal path and play
500 H z – 2.5 kHz bandwidth-li mited pink noise at 0 dB through your primary audio source outputs.
I f you are calibrati ng a subwoofer, use 40 Hz – 80 H z bandwidth-li mited pink noise.
You should not hear the test tone. If you do, repeat step 1 and turn down the speakers playing it.
5) I f you are using an SP L meter, pan the test tone so i t only plays in the left speaker ( hard left) .
NOTE: When both speakers play simultaneously, the overal l SP L will i ncrease by about +3 dB. T o
account for this, subtract -3 dB when cali brating the left and right channels. ( For example, i f your
overall acoustic level cannot exceed 90 dB SP L , cali brate each speaker to reach only 87 dB SP L .)
6) T urn the M ain level knob to Unity Gain by turning i t fully clockwise.
7) Begin turning the Speaker Level A djust A knob to Unity Gain by turning it fully clockwise. Y ou
should begin hearing the test tone playing through your pri mary speakers. I f the acousti c level
reaches your desired maxi mum level ( as measured by your ears or an SP L meter) , stop increasing
the Speaker Level and skip step 8. I n most cases, you should not reach your maximum level yet.
8) Begin slowly increasing the input sensiti vity (volume) of your pri mary monitoring system’s left
speaker unti l the acousti c level of the test tone playing reaches the desired maxi mum SP L .
9) Repeat steps 4, 5, 6 and 8 for the right channel.
10) I f you are calibrating a monitori ng system with independent subwoofer level control ( such as a 2.1
or 2-way speaker system) , repeat steps 4, 5, 6 and 8 for the subwoofer level.
11)
Repeat steps 1 through 9 for the monitoring systems connected to ST 2 and A ux/P hono.
12) [ T est] : P lay audio through Speaker A only. Without adjusting any of the M onitor Stati on’s levels ,
toggle Speaker A ‘OFF’ and Speaker B ‘ ON ’ . Y ou may hear a sli ght tonal vari ance due to the
different acousti c properti es of the monitoring systems, but the loudness should remai n the same.
I f the loudness varies drasti cally, you may wish to repeat this calibration procedure from step 1.

85 dB SPL “Standard” Reference
T his method references a specif ic “ standard” meter reading to a certain acousti c level. T his method is the
most technical, least subjecti ve method and is good for studios where a specific type of audio is produced or
where an industry standard audio level exists ( such as for fi lm or broadcast) . One of the most commoncalibration standards ( and the one presented here) is -20 dBFS referenced to 85 dB SP L .
dBFS means “ decibels full scale” and is associated with decibel amplitude levels in digital systems where
there is a fi nite maximum available level ( such as in standard PCM encoding) . T he maxi mum level possible
is referred to as “ 0 dBFS” . I n digi tal systems with analogue outputs ( such as digi tal i nterfaces) , i ts
analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue converters (ADCs & DACs) are referenced so 0 dBFS equals a
certai n amount of analogue voltage. ( For example, a 0 dBFS tone playing at U nity Gain from a Fi reBox
measures +18 dBu, while a 0 dBFS from a Fi reStudio Project at Unity Gain measures +10 dBu.) I t is
important to know your digital devices’ 0 dBFS reference to prevent cli pping and to aid in proper calibrati on.
1) “ Zero” the Speaker, M ain, Cue and P hones levels by turning them fully counterclockwise.
2) Select only the ST 1 M ain Source and Speaker A selections.
3) T urn your primary monitoring system (connected to ST 1) input level to its lowest setting. On many
powered monitors, this is the “ I nput Sensiti vity” . Consult your monitor system’s user’s manuals or
manufacturers’ Websites for more informati on about adjusting the input or ampli fi cation level.
4) Remove all effects processors ( i .e. E Qs, compressors, reverbs, etc.) from the signal path and play
500 H z – 2.5 kHz bandwidth-li mited pink noise at -20 dBFS through your primary audio source
outputs. I f you are cali brating a subwoofer, use 40 Hz – 80 H z bandwidth-li mited pink noise.
You should not hear the test tone. If you do, repeat step 1 and turn down the speakers playing it.

should begin hearing the test tone playing through your pri mary speakers. I ncrease the level unti l
the SP L meter reads 85 dB. I n most cases, you should not reach 85 dB SP L yet.
8) Begin slowly increasing the input sensiti vity (volume) of your pri mary monitoring system’s left
speaker unti l the acousti c level of the test tone playing reaches 85 dB SP L .
9) Repeat steps 4, 5, 6 and 8 for the right channel.
10)
I f you are calibrating a monitori ng system with independent subwoofer level control ( such as a 2.1or 2-way speaker system) , repeat steps 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 for the subwoofer level.
11) Repeat steps 1 through 10 for the monitoring systems connected to ST 2 and A ux/P hono.

2.1.7 Calibrate the talkback microphone
1) “ Zero” the M ain, T alkback, Cue, P hones and Dim knobs by turning them fully counterclockwise.
2) [ Optional] : Connect a dynamic microphone to the external mic XLR input connection.
3) Connect headphones to any one of the headphones connections and select ‘CUE’ as its source.
4) P lay audio common to your studio’s producti ons ( such as a commercial CD or existi ng project) and
set that audio source as the only input to the Cue bus ( section 3.1.4 ) .
5) Wear the headphones connected in step 3 and turn them up to a comfortable li stening level.
6) Engage the talkback microphone by pressing the T alk button.
T he headphones level should dim. I f the amount of level decrease is more than you feel i s
comfortable, slowly increase the Dim A ttenuati on knob unti l the diminished level i s acceptable.
7) Begin speaking into the talkback microphone and slowly turn up the T alkback Level knob unti l you
can adequately hear yourself speak ing through the headphones.

Cue outputs
T he Cue L /R outputs are typically used for connecti ng additi onal headphone ampli fi ers. T heir source is set by
the Cue bus Source ( secti on 3.1.4 ) , and their level i s determi ned by the Cue Output level ( section 3.1.3 ) .
1) “ Zero” the M ain and Cue level knobs by turning them fully counterclockwise.
2) Connect the inputs of the additi onal cue device to the Cue L /R outputs.
3) Calibrate the device’s audio levels. P lease consult the device’s user’s manual or manufacturer’ s
Website for more informati on on its recommended calibration process.
I f the device does not have a recommended calibrati on process, increase the Cue Output level to
Unity Gain by turning the Cue Output level knob fully clockwise.
Main outputs
T he M ain L /R outputs are essenti ally a “ thru” which copies the input sources directly. T hey are typically
used for devices needing a constant full-strength input signal ( such as tape machines or CD recorders) . T heir
source is set by the M ain bus Source (section 3.1.4 ) , and their output level is equal to the input source level.

2.3 ADVANCED M ODES
T o enhance the M onitor Stati on’s functionali ty, the behavior of the input LED meter and Speaker Select, M ain
Source and Cue Source buttons can be changed to best suit your studio environment.
Enter the following modes by pressing and holding the specifi ed buttons whi le powering on the M onitor Station.
Only one mode can be set at a time. T he M onitor Station remains in the selected modes unti l another is selected.
2.3.1 Speaker Select M odes
• Combo The default Speaker Select mode.
I n Combo mode, all Speaker Select buttons can be active
simultaneously.
• Toggle Restricts Speaker selection.
I n T oggle mode, only one Speaker Select button can be
acti ve.
T his mode is primarily used when referencing your audio
source across different sets of studio monitors.
• Toggle A/B Restricts Speaker A & Speaker B selection.
I n Toggle A /B mode, Speaker A and Speaker B cannot
be active simultaneously. Speaker C can remain active
at all times.
T his mode is pri mari ly used if Speaker C is a subwoofer.
2.3 .2 M ain and Cue Source M odes
• Input Sum The default Source mode.
I n I nput Sum mode, all M ain and Cue Source buttons can
be acti ve simultaneously.
• Input Toggle Restricts Source selection.

4.1 FREQUEN TLY ASKED QUESTI ONS
Why can’t I hear the talkback microphone?
• Remember, only headphones with a Phones Source of ‘ CU E’ can hear the talkback microphone.
• Connect and/or cali brate your talkback microphone according to secti on 2.1.7.
• Verify your external mic does not require phantom power.
• I f you are not using an external microphone, disconnect anything connected to the XLR input.
Why do I see levels on the LED meter but not hear anything through the speakers?
• T he LED meter only measures the M onitor Station’s input, so seeing level is only half the battle.
• Connect and calibrate your speakers according to sections 2.1.5 and 2.1.6.
• Ensure the correct Speaker Select button is li t and its Speaker L evel Adjust knob is turned up.
• Disengage the T alk , M ono, M ute and Dim buttons. T hen slowly turn up the M ain Level knob.
• M ove your speakers to a different output to veri fy the outputs are functioning properly.
• Connect the input source directly to your speakers to veri fy the speakers are functi oning properly.
I have everything turned all the way up, but my speakers still aren’t loud enough … what gives?
• T he M onitor Station is not an ampli fi er, so please do not try to use it as one.
• T he only inputs with any preamp gain are the Aux/P hono and external microphone inputs.
• T he only outputs with any gain are the headphone ampli fi ers.
Why doesn’t the Main Level knob control the Main Outs?
• Because the M onitor Station was not designed to functi on that way.
• T he M ain Outs should be used for devices needing an unaffected signal, such as a CD recorder.
Why won’t the Monitor Station change modes for me?
• Remember, you can only set one mode per power up, so do not try to hold two buttons down.
• Y ou must be holding down the mode-changing button the instant the power switch is fl ipped on.
• Set the mode according to secti on 2.3.
