Tire Choices And MaintenanceYour tires play an important role in the overall fuel economy of your truck. Newer fuel-effi cient tires help reduce rolling resistance, especially in the trail positions. Since research shows that the tread contributes to over half of a tire’s rolling resistance, fuel effi ciency gains can be obtained from the tread depth, design and compound. Plus, as your tires wear, fuel economy slightly increases. But one of the easiest factors you can do to save money is to make sure your tires are properly infl ated. That’s because fuel economy falls off sharply the more your tires are underinfl ated.

Money-Saving Tips: • Check your tires frequently for proper tire

infl ation. Many companies off er tire infl ation systems that maintain proper tire pressure while driving. These systems often pay for themselves within a short period of time.

• Check your wheel alignment. You can improve your fuel economy by reducing tire “scrub” from improperly aligned wheels.

• Use low-profi le tires and aluminum wheels to reduce weight.

Just about every aspect of your truck has an eff ect on your fuel economy. Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can do to save money at the pump. Although the percentages

may seem small, the savings can be quite large in the long run.

REDUCING FUEL CONSUMPTIONTO SAVE MONEY.

Driving StyleAggressive driving habits have a tremendous infl uence on your fuel economy and can rapidly negate any investments in fuel-effi cient tires, engines and streamlined aerodynamic devices. In fact, by modifying your driving style, you can signifi cantly increase your fuel economy.

Money-Saving Tips:• Use a fuel-economy display to monitor fuel

consumption and correct excessive usage.

• Reduce your speed. On average, every one mph increase over 50 mph reduces your fuel mileage by .1 miles per gallon.

• While accelerating, short-shift to keep your engine below 1,200 rpms. While decelerating, lug your engine to 1,150 rpms before downshifting.

• Keep idle time to a minimum. In general, fi ve minutes of warm-up time is adequate and the time spent parking provides plenty of cool-down time.

Route ManagementTraveling to new destinations can often lead to extra time spent on unfamiliar roads. It is estimated that out-of-route miles account for 3-10% of a driver’s total mileage each year. And that can add up to thousands of dollars needlessly spent on fuel.

Money-Saving Tips:• Invest in navigation equipment to ensure

the most effi cient route.

• Verify the address and inquire about new

road construction or delays.

AerodynamicsThe aerodynamics of your truck can impact your fuel economy in a tremendous way. In fact, aerodynamic drag at 65 mph accounts for approximately two-thirds of your energy consumption. And between 55 and 75 mph, every 5 mph increase reduces your fuel economy signifi cantly.

Money-Saving Tips:• Remove accessory components from the air stream to

reduce drag.

• Improve your fuel economy by using a full roof fairing.

• Position your trailer as close to the cab as possible. By reducing the trailer gap by 10", you can increase your fuel economy.

Weight ReductionEvery pound counts. That’s why it’s so important to eliminate unnecessary weight wherever possible. The more weight you’re pulling, the more money you’re spending on fuel.

Money-Saving Tips:• Choose lightweight aluminum wheels and

low-profi le tires.

• Remove any unpaid load from your vehicle.

Proper LubricantsSynthetic-based lubricants are specially engineered to provide superior high-temperature stability and low-temperature fl uidity. Ideally suited for drivetrain components, synthetic-based lubricants off er signifi cant benefi ts in fuel savings and can last longer than mineral-based lubricants.

Money-Saving Tips: • Use synthetic-based lubricants in drivetrain components to help fuel economy.

• Use the manufacturer’s specifi ed weight of lubricant for all vehicle components. Consult your owner’s manual for complete lubricant information.
