USDA Acting Chief Economist Robert C. Johansson presented the factors that will affect Ameri-can agriculture in the year ahead. Consider these statistics, based on USDA’s forecast.• U.S. agricultural exports are expected to remain strong in 2015, hitting the second-highest levelever at $141.5 billion. That’s lower than 2014, but only because commodity prices have fallen. Those prices will remain painfully low in 2015/16, thanks to bumper crop after bumper crop. •USDAprojects $3.50 for corn, $5.10 for wheat and $9 for soybeans. Soybeans continue to be an importantcrop for U.S. farmers, who could export more than 48 million metric tons of beans in 2015, whichJohansson said could be a “record level if re-alized.” •We have some competition for thetop spot in grain exports. While the U.S. i s ex-pected to remain the largest exporter of cornin 2015, that title is at risk for other commoditycrops. • In soybeans, the U.S. will likely loseout to Brazil in 2016/17. Economists expectAmerican soybeans to lose market share onthe global stage, falling to 33% by 2024. Incomparison, Brazil is expected to capture 46%of the global soybean market during the sametime frame. •In wheat, the European Unionand Russia are both nipping at America’s heels. The U.S. was the top wheat exporter as recently as2013/14. • USDA thinks farmers are going to plant fewer ac res this year, even in soybeans. “Soy-bean area is expected to fall modestly from its record area in 2014 to 83.5 million acres, withmovement out of soybeans tempered by its lower operating costs and forward marketing opportuni-ties in the past few months,” Johansson said. • As expected, corn acres are also expected to drop, with 89 million acres projected for 2015. • Winter wheat seedings have already dipped nearly 2million acres, although growers may offset that through spring wheat crops.•With $2.7 trillion in farm equity, farmers should be financially stable enough to withstand the down-
turn in crop prices. “Farm equity is the highest it has been since we began collecting and reportingon profitability in 1960,” said Johansson, who also noted that farmers’ current debt-to-asset ratio of 10.9% is also historically low.•The U.S. will produce a record 95 mil lion pounds of meat in 2015, thanks to the pork and poultryindustries. •Milk production will also be historically high, at 211.5 million pounds. But while themargins for cattle will stay strong in 2015, prices for pork, poultry and dairy are likely to soften.

Reflections: Of Lessons Learned Written by Rachel Essaff Maher
The classroom door was open and the room was dark. Although the
chalkboard had been replaced by a dry-erase board, the air still held
the faint scent of chalk, mingling with the unmistakable smell of in-
dustrial desk cleaner. Leaning against the doorframe, I watched the
swirl of dust motes in the beams of sunlight coming in from beneath the half-drawn
shades. Last spring, this place had been my sanctuary.
A year ago, I was walking a thin line between happiness and self-destruction; a line I’d
been on before and swore I would never walk again. Unfortunately, life has a way of
pushing us to our limits again and again, willing us to bend in ways we do not intend toand forcing us to reconcile our deepest fears when we are least capable of doing so.
And as such, last year (and truthfully, the one before it as well) was one of the worst
years on record for me.
Closing my eyes, I sat down in one of the chairs (my chair!) and lay my forehead
against the cool surface of the desk. Anyone walking by might wonder what I was
doing. I was taking a break from my job downstairs, my office job working at my alma
mater. I’d had to get away from my stacks of files and to-do lists. This quiet room
drew me like a magnet. My oasis, it was—a place of higher learning and empower-
ment. There, under the tutelage of the most intelligent man I have ever known, I learned
to confront the worst parts of me and to write about them with an honesty I’d been too
frightened of before. Writing, for me, had always been a constant; after his instruc-
tion, it has become therapeutic and cleansing, a way to purge the gloom and the sorrow,
as well as to amplify the joy and the sentimental.
Lifting my head from the desk, I could almost see the professor scribbling Latin root
words on the board, dissecting the written language with the skill and precision of a
master surgeon, urging his students to truly understand why this or that word was cho-
sen by each writer or poet. Whether it was the professor or the literature that got methrough those dark days, I can never ascertain. But the changes of a lifetime occurred
for me in this very room, in this very chair, where things I had read and heard began to
sink into the depths of everything I’d been struggling with until suddenly, as if over-
night, something finally clicked into place within my mind and the struggle was over.
An epiphany, brought on by both education and multiple conversations with someone
truly worth listening to, changed the course of my entire life. And once it had hap-
pened, it was shocking to me that it had not happened sooner. There, in that very chair,
I had finally become someone with direction and determination. And yesterday, at the
most stressful part of my day, I’d come back to find myself, my center, again and found
that I had never really left the classroom. I was still there and probably always will be,
drifting somewhere in between the chalk scent and the distant echoes of Latin root
words.
BENNINGTON, VT——During the early spring and summer of 2015, the Ver-
mont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) will begin work on the Benmont Ave.
bridge in Bennington. As part of this construction project, southbound travel
across the bridge will be prohibited and pedestrian traffic will not be permitted
on the bridge. Motorists will be able to travel northbound across the bridge
throughout the duration of the project. The projected completion date for this
contract is October 2016, and the southbound movements across the bridge will
remain closed for the entirety of the contract.
The contractor is scheduled to begin placing construction signs throughout the
project beginning Tuesday, February 17, 2015. Preparations for construction
will continue through the week of March 2nd. It is anticipated that southbound
movements across the bridge will be closed beginning March 9th, weather per-
mitting.
A detour will be in place directing motor vehicle traffic east on Route 7A
(Northside Dr.) to US Route 7 South. From there, the detour will continue to
County St., connecting motorists back to Benmont Avenue on the south side of the bridge. Pedestrian traffic will travel onto Hunt St., crossing over the pedes-
trian bridge, to Hicks Ave.
Please be aware that adverse weather conditions may affect the construction
schedule and the contractor’s ability to adhere precisely to the projected sched-
ule. Every effort will be made to inform the traveling public of any major sched-
uling changes. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation throughout this
coming construction season. You may contact Project Outreach Coordinator
Natalie Boyle at 802-310-7822 with any questions or concerns.
