Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to Albany,Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate larger numbers of goods and more

efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight

cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing of plastic! Convey-ances varied according to size, weight, and distance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some

general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with horse could be rentedby an individual or small business from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could

carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the

General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to4:00 P.M. through November. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the Washington County

Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York. For further information call 518-747-9108 or email [email protected].
