A magnificent, unspoiled, pictur- esque and peaceful setting – miles away , literally and metaphorically , from the office grind. Tick. Cosy and comfortable accommo- dation to use as a base. Tick. Wonderful walks, preferably straight from the above cosy and comfortable accommodation. Tick. Mouthwatering and plentiful sup- ply of delicious food in an intimate setting to tuck into at the end of a day’s adventure. Tick. A relaxing spa area complete with pool, sauna, steam room and hot tub, to unwind in and perhaps con- template evening dinner. Tick. But what if the perfect get-away- from-it-all break gets away from eve- rything ... apart from the kids (how dare grandparents be busy globe- trotting, surely their job is to offer round-the-clock childcare at the drop of a hat?) Then how about a pool that wel- comes wee ones with bar area serv- ing child-friendly meals allowing mum and dad to unwind with a glass of something refreshing. Tick. Oh and a pool table for older kids, a soft play area complete with ball pool for tots and a sports hall offer- ing badminton, squash and mini tennis for the whole family to have a bash at. Tick. And bike hire to get the clan out and about on the numerous trails within easy reach of the, don’t for- get, cosy and c omfortable base. Tick. That’s the thing about the Moness Resort, situated in beautiful Aber- feldy. It ticks all the boxes. My wife and I enjoyed a terrific break at Moness in mid-February. We somehow managed to grab Grandma in between her legendary epic hiking expeditions across most of southern Europe to look after our two boys for a couple of days and so it was just the two of us. Fab. The beauty of Aberfeldy is that it’s less than an hour from Dun- fermline but light-years from day-to- day reality. We took a detour to the House of Bruar a tad further up the A9 and lost an hour eyeing up the array of tasty treats in the tempting food hall. We restricted ourselves to some chocolates (well it was Valen- tine’s) and some biscuits for the of- fice (it was the guilt) but as we were staying in one of the 106 contem- porary four-star cottages at Mon- ess, there was ample opportunity to stock up on some treats for our stay. Temptation avoided – chocolates and biscuits aside – we headed out and enjoyed a simple stroll to the beautiful Falls of Bruar, wor king up a healthy appetite for our chocolates and biscuits. Sorry office. While there is a hotel at Moness offering 26 en-suite rooms in the unique Moness house, individual- ly-styled and all Egyptian cotton sheets, luxury spa toiletries, plump pillows and inviting decor; the cot- tages in the resort offer the most flexibility. All are well-equipped and come complete with satellite TV and DVD. Bedrooms can be made up as either twins or doubles to suit your needs. Our one-bedroom Clover Cottage  – lucky us – was ideal. Toasty warm inside, the cottage was spacious with two toilets and a large bedroom downstairs and large living area up- stairs with sofa and well-equipped kitchen. As a cottage resident you get full use of the leisure centre facilities, bars and restaurant on the resort, but you could also eat in, providing flexibility and freedom. We headed out to soak up the spa and on both nights enjoyed dining at the Flem- myng restaurant – just a t wo-minute walk from our cottage door. The Flemmyng offers fine dining; the head chef and his team aspire to menus that offer an excellent choice of fresh meat, fish and game sourced locally from around Perthshire and are changed regularly – we enjoyed an entirely different menu on both our nights. Book dinner, bed & breakfast and you have a £27 allow- ance for the food. It isn’t cheap but it certainly delivers on flavour and presentation; the venison and salm- on we ordered were particular high- lights but we both went for cheese at the end as the mains were a tad short on filling carbs. If fine dining isn’t your cup of Earl Grey then you could equally opt for the Terrace Bar – a less for- mal setting with bistro-style fur- niture and the perfect choice for a lighter, more informal meal. Family-friendly, it’s popular as it overlooks the swimming pool and offers a range of snacks and meals as well as tea, coffee and stronger refreshments. You can even drink or dine al fresco on the outdoor ter- race when the weather’s fine but we had to take the resort’s word for it  – there was 12cm of snow overnight during our stay! Which served to make our eager- ly-anticipated walk up the spectacu- lar Birks of Aberfeldy – just down the road from Moness – even more magical. Walking is our thing which made this the ideal location for trails and strolls in nearby Kenmore, Pit- lochry and Dunkeld but the area is packed with attractions on the door- step, from Blair Castle to Dewar’s distillery, Highland safaris to Dun- keld Cathedral there’s something for every taste. And ours, being impeccable and rather sweet, took us to the High- land Chocolatier, in Grandtully  just outside Aberfeldy. Offering the chance to taste exquisite, award- winning chocolates, this Scottish Chocolate Centre also offers tours to learn more about chocolatier Iain Burnett’s outstanding artisan gourmet chocolates. And there’s a tearoom on site offering, frankly, the world’s greatest ever chocolate brownie. You have to try it. Aberfeldy is a wonderful part of the world and Moness is the perfect base from which to explore it – how- ever big your group and whatever the occasion. We’ll be back – in June in fact. It will be a slightly bigger c ottage this time as we’re taking Grandma and the boys for her 70th. Can’t wait. l  For accommodation enquiries  phone 01887 822108 or e-mail: info@ moness.com  Moness can also be your wedding venue; for special occasions and events phone 01887 822102 or e-mail: [email protected]  Cedar Room By Simon Harris
