Thatrsquos the thing about the MonessResort situated in beautiful Aber-

feldy It ticks all the boxesMy wife and I enjoyed a terrific

break at Moness in mid-FebruaryWe somehow managed to grabGrandma in between her legendaryepic hiking expeditions across mostof southern Europe to look after ourtwo boys for a couple of days and soit was just the two of us Fab

The beauty of Aberfeldy is thatitrsquos less than an hour from Dun-fermline but light-years from day-to-day reality We took a detour to theHouse of Bruar a tad further up the

A9 and lost an hour eyeing up thearray of tasty treats in the temptingfood hall We restricted ourselves tosome chocolates (well it was Valen-tinersquos) and some biscuits for the of-fice (it was the guilt) but as we werestaying in one of the 106 contem-porary four-star cottages at Mon-ess there was ample opportunity tostock up on some treats for our stay

Temptation avoided ndash chocolatesand biscuits aside ndash we headed outand enjoyed a simple stroll to thebeautiful Falls of Bruar working upa healthy appetite for our chocolatesand biscuits Sorry office

While there is a hotel at Monessoffering 26 en-suite rooms in theunique Moness house individual-ly-styled and all Egyptian cottonsheets luxury spa toiletries plumppillows and inviting decor the cot-tages in the resort offer the mostflexibility All are well-equipped andcome complete with satellite TV andDVD Bedrooms can be made up aseither twins or doubles to suit yourneeds

Our one-bedroom Clover Cottage ndash lucky us ndash was ideal Toasty warminside the cottage was spaciouswith two toilets and a large bedroomdownstairs and large living area up-

stairs with sofa and well-equippedkitchen

As a cottage resident you get fulluse of the leisure centre facilitiesbars and restaurant on the resortbut you could also eat in providingflexibility and freedom We headedout to soak up the spa and on bothnights enjoyed dining at the Flem-myng restaurant ndash just a t wo-minutewalk from our cottage door

The Flemmyng offers fine diningthe head chef and his team aspire tomenus that offer an excellent choice

of fresh meat fish and game sourcedlocally from around Perthshire andare changed regularly ndash we enjoyedan entirely different menu on bothour nights Book dinner bed ampbreakfast and you have a pound27 allow-ance for the food It isnrsquot cheap butit certainly delivers on flavour andpresentation the venison and salm-on we ordered were particular high-lights but we both went for cheeseat the end as the mains were a tadshort on filling carbs

If fine dining isnrsquot your cup ofEarl Grey then you could equallyopt for the Terrace Bar ndash a less for-mal setting with bistro-style fur-niture and the perfect choice for alighter more informal meal

Family-friendly itrsquos popular as itoverlooks the swimming pool andoffers a range of snacks and mealsas well as tea coffee and strongerrefreshments You can even drinkor dine al fresco on the outdoor ter-race when the weatherrsquos fine but wehad to take the resortrsquos word for it

ndash there was 12cm of snow overnightduring our stay

Which served to make our eager-ly-anticipated walk up the spectacu-lar Birks of Aberfeldy ndash just downthe road from Moness ndash even more

magicalWalking is our thing which made

this the ideal location for trailsand strolls in nearby Kenmore Pit-lochry and Dunkeld but the area ispacked with attractions on the door-step from Blair Castle to Dewarrsquosdistillery Highland safaris to Dun-keld Cathedral therersquos somethingfor every taste

And ours being impeccable andrather sweet took us to the High-land Chocolatier in Grandtully

just outside Aberfeldy Offering the

chance to taste exquisite award-winning chocolates this ScottishChocolate Centre also offers toursto learn more about chocolatierIain Burnettrsquos outstanding artisangourmet chocolates And therersquos a

tearoom on site offering franklythe worldrsquos greatest ever chocolatebrownie You have to try it

Aberfeldy is a wonderful part ofthe world and Moness is the perfectbase from which to explore it ndash how-ever big your group and whateverthe occasion

Wersquoll be back ndash in June in fact Itwill be a slightly bigger c ottage thistime as wersquore taking Grandma andthe boys for her 70th Canrsquot wait
