Sensei TJ Labbee began training with his entire family when he was only 7 years old. With both of his parents having made it to advanced ranks, his sister being a former instructor and World Kickboxing Champion, and his younger brother taking classes with us since age 3, one could say that he now comes from a martial arts family. TJ was a quiet, uncoordinated kid, who always had a smile on his face. From the beginning TJ showed a strong work ethic and a ton of determination. This hard work and determination soon payed off in the form of coordination and skill. He is now one of our MOST talented martial artists and a GREAT instructor!

When Sensei TJ was 9 years old, he joined our Youth Leadership Team. This is a program designed to teach children how to assist other instructors by holding pads and encouraging other students. He began helping in classes, learning all he could about helping and encouraging others. He attended our Jr. Training Program and assisted in classes until he was hired as a paid floor instructor.

Sensei TJ now works and trains with the same dedication to excellence. At only 20 years old, he has 13 of years martial arts experience, and has been learning to teach others for more than 10 years. This gives him more practical experience than many 30 and 40 yr. old instructors. Sensei TJ attends our yearly instructor training weekends where we work on sharpening teaching skills. He is also a graduate of an International Instructor College.

As a martial artist, Sensei TJ has many accomplishments. Along with being one of our first Leadership Kids, he was also one of our first and youngest Demo Team Kids. He and his best friend Sensei Jimmy are both assistant Demo Team Directors, helping Sensei CT every week. He is one of only 5 students who have attained the rank of 3rd

degree black belt. He was also an outstanding kickboxer for many years. Sensei TJ won 2nd place at the IKF World Kickboxing Championships 2 years in a row, and he still trains and spars with our fighters every week helping them prepare for competitions. Sensei TJ is great instructor and an amazing martial artist who has a very bright future. I am happy to have him on our team!!!

What is ResponsibilityResponsibility is accepting the consequences of your decisions. A consequence is what happens after you make a decision. Sometimes consequences are good, and sometimes they are bad.For example, your parents tell you that it is your responsibility to keep your room clean. If your room is clean then you will be rewarded and allowed to watch TV or play a video game. If your room is not clean, the consequence might be some sort of punishment. A person who is strong on the inside will accept responsibility for their actions instead of making excuses. Responsibility is a HUGE life skill which incorporates many others, such as:

1. Courage: To admit when you’ve messed up.2. Self Discipline: To do what you’re responsible to do.3. Team Work: Fulfilling your responsibility to your #1 Team… Your

family.

Responsibility at Home Our family is our #1 TEAM. We have said in the past that TEAM stands for Together Everyone Achieves More. So this means you have responsibilities as part of that team. Your responsibility might be to do a certain chore or set of chores. It might be to help out with your brothers and sisters. Everyone’s responsibility on EVERY team is to listen to their coach. In this case, the coach is the grown ups in charge. If just one person on the team doesn’t fulfill their responsibility, everything falls apart and the team doesn’t work right.

School is a place you go everyday which helps prepare you for life. Your teachers work very hard to teach you skills to help prepare you for the rest of your life. However, you have a big responsibility within that process. Listening in class, following directions, obeying the rules, and doing your work are all responsibilities which you must fulfill in order to get the most out of school.

Martial arts students should get stronger each day on the outside and the inside. Fulfilling our responsibility in school helps us to do this.

WORKSHEET:

Younger students have your parents help you with this

A responsible person would:

A. Lie about something they did.

B. Try to get out of doing work.

C. Admit when they did something wrong.

I would like you and your parents to sit down and talk about your weakest area of personal responsibility. Discuss exactly how your parents would like this area improved. Maybe it’s a chore or list of chores for which you are responsible. Maybe it has to do with school work. Maybe it’s simply not making excuses and blaming other people.Once you have this discussed, I want you to work on fixing that area of responsibility in your life. I want you to write one paragraph, on a separate sheet of paper, describing what you did this month. It must be signed by your parents.

PLEASE USE A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER

Responsibility at home would be:

A. Arguing with mom & dad.

B. Doing your chores without being told.

C. Tattling on your brother or sister for not doing their chores.

Responsibility at school would be:

A. Looking over your work really well before handing it in, to make sure everything is right.

B. Asking to go to the bathroom when you don’t actually have to go, just to get out of class.

C. Talking during class when the teacher is talking.
