LAST NIGHT’S READING

What shall we discuss?

Page 21: Monday, September 25pehs.psd202.org/documents/cneal/1506700787.pdf · Tech savvy students, create an Infographic to share your findings. Try using Easel.ly, Piktochart, Infogr.am,

INVESTIGATING TONE

Tone (author’s attitude) is our main concern this semester, and DIDLS is our trusty tool.

In order to analyze tone though, you need to know what he would have a tone about.

With your partners, look over the themes I shared with you, and ones you are tracking yourselves. Discuss the themes, and what universal idea (message) seems to be associated with it.

Don’t worry about DIDLS just yet.

Page 22: Monday, September 25pehs.psd202.org/documents/cneal/1506700787.pdf · Tech savvy students, create an Infographic to share your findings. Try using Easel.ly, Piktochart, Infogr.am,

ANALYZING TONE

Pick the theme that most interests you, and

find an instance of it in the reading so far.

This is where detailed annotations helps!

Page 23: Monday, September 25pehs.psd202.org/documents/cneal/1506700787.pdf · Tech savvy students, create an Infographic to share your findings. Try using Easel.ly, Piktochart, Infogr.am,

ANALYZING TONE

Based on your passage, determine what DIDLS is used, and what tone McCarthy has towards this theme.

Write this out as a claim statement in your journal.

Ex: In The Road by Cormac McCarthy, he uses determined details to convey a ruthless tone towards survival despite the odds to show that good people must endure to find meaning.

Page 24: Monday, September 25pehs.psd202.org/documents/cneal/1506700787.pdf · Tech savvy students, create an Infographic to share your findings. Try using Easel.ly, Piktochart, Infogr.am,

DISCUSS!

With your partner, discuss your analysis. Remember to:

Identify DIDLS

Explain how that DIDLS conveys tone

And what that means for the theme (ie what message is

McCarthy trying to send?)

Page 25: Monday, September 25pehs.psd202.org/documents/cneal/1506700787.pdf · Tech savvy students, create an Infographic to share your findings. Try using Easel.ly, Piktochart, Infogr.am,

Reread the man and boy’s conversation at the end of

What about the old man will be remembered?

Is this universal or particular?
