Alexander the Great
Phillip II of Macedonia After the Peloponnesian Wars, Greece was
left vulnerable to attack from outside invaders.
In 399 B.C., Phillip of Macedonia invaded Greece and incorporated it into his kingdom.
Phillip II of MacedoniaAfter conquering Greece, Phillip had plans
to conquer the Persian empire.
However, he was assassinated at his daughter’s wedding.
The assasination of Phillip allowed his son, Alexander, to become ruler of Macedonia.
Alexander of MacedoniaAfter Phillip’s death, Alexander took control of
Macedonia.
Alexander’s first act as ruler was a successful conquest of Egypt.
After conquest of Egypt, Alexander conquered the Persian empire.
Eventually, Alexander conquered the largest empire in history that stretched across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Impact of Alexander the Great’s ConquestAlexander’s conquest had a major impact
on the ancient world.He spread Greek culture. (Language, medical
knowledge, scientific knowledge, etc.)He blended together eastern and western
cultures (Greek, Persian, Egyptian, and Indian, which became known as Hellenistic culture).

Perspectives/Points of ViewOften, people see things differently. We
often see things from our point of view.
Think about what just happened. Some of you saw the young woman and others saw the old woman.
Think about the documents that you read about Alexander the Great. Each document had accounts that praised or condemned Alexander the Great.
Who was Alexander the Great?Alexander the Great was a king and great military
commander who conquered an empire that stretched across three continents (Europe, Africa, and Asia).
He fought a lot of battles, which means that lots of people died. He was also unable to see everything that was happening after an area was conquered.
He blended Greek, Egyptian, Persian, and Indian cultures (Hellenistic cultures). He encouraged scholars from each area to learn from each other. He also encouraged his armies to marry into families of other cultures.
Political Cartoon AssignmentToday, you must create two political
cartoons. One for Alexander the Great and on against him.
Afterwards, you will write a response to the question. Was Alexander the Great a hero or villian?
