Stewardship: School’s Annual Appeal—Giving Tuesday

Next week the Second Collection is for our School Annual Appeal. Join those who have given over $450,000 since 2012 in support of our students. "To support our students is to invest in our future; by committing yourselves to them, you honor those whose dedication built our school and encourage those who today work to ignite the potential in every child. I ask you to be generous to them and help them write their story which begins here, now, in these halls."

Father Posey

Page 3: Monday, November 26— Thursday, November 29 Wednesday ......David to do battle and bring tribes together. However, during Pilate’s meeting with Jesus, we see the contradiction

Page 3 November 25, 2018

“So Pilate said to him, ‘Then you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say I am a king.’” John 18:37 Thrones and dominions. Clouds and majesty. Our readings today clearly want to remind us that Christ is “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” You can almost hear the Hallelujah chorus. As a society, we can fixate on royalty, enamored by the trappings of pomp and splendor. We want our rulers to be strong, to fight off the proverbial dragons. Our literature is full of crusading knights and brave warrior-

generals who seek justice. This was the mindset of those during Jesus’ lifetime: they sought another David to do battle and bring tribes together. However, during Pilate’s meeting with Jesus, we see the contradiction. He stands before Pilate, not as a “royal,” but a man, divinely begotten through the Holy Spirit, yet betrayed by men and ready to humble himself for our salvation. How can Pilate reconcile this display of humanity with Jesus’ supposed kingship? He could not; he could not see the truth before him as Jesus spoke of it. What of us? Can we reconcile the infant to be born in a dirty stable with the Risen Messiah? Can we really see that this vulnerable refugee would one day begin a movement that would change our history? Or are our images of Jesus separate and distinct? Christ governs our lives not through force, but through mercy. As our ultimate Ruler, He is also our ultimate guide and goal. Saint Mother Teresa’s message of mercy resonated so profoundly because she did “ordinary things with extraordinary love.” Caring for their basic needs, she reinforced their humanity showing us that we are all God’s children. Emulating Christ, she revealed to the world that the ability to change lives does not always come from a gilded throne but from powerful discipleship. We come to the close of Ordinary Time now to ready ourselves for the birth of no ordinary king.

Congratulations former Rocket Harrison Coon (back row– far left) who was recently inducted into the Scabbard & Blade Company, Rocky Top Battalion chapter at the University of Tennessee. These nine dedicated cadets join 15 current members to promote leadership and service throughout the community.

Last month members of our Girl Scout Troop 522 visited the Korean War Memorial where they met Veteran Howard Willis, who traveled from Indiana on an Honor Guard flight. Though hard of hearing and almost blind, he enjoyed the respect of the girls so much on display. Thank you Mrs. Zeoli for sharing this photo.

Social Outreach Committee Christmas Activities 2018

Gift Cards for Families in Need SUNDAY MORNING DECEMBER 2 and DECEMBER 16 The Social Outreach Committee is working with Catholic Charities to provide gift cards to families in need. We are asking parishioners to donate gift cards from stores such as CVS, Giant, and Wal-Mart so local families can use the cards to purchase food, toiletries, and a few special gifts. On Sunday December 2 and Sunday, December 16 you can buy gift cards from members of the Social Outreach Committee in Heller Hall. If cards are purchased at this time then St. James School also benefits from the purchase of cards. Cards can also be purchased separately and dropped in the collection basket during any weekend mass on December 1, 2, 8, and 9. If you have any questions, please call Mary Ann Parker at 703-241-9128 or Amy Steinbicker at 703-407-1663. Work of Human Hands Sale and Donut Sunday, SUNDAY MORNING DECEMBER 16 On Sunday, December 16 from 8:30am to Noon, the Social Outreach Committee will be hosting Donut Sunday with donuts and coffee in Heller Hall. Along with the reception there will be a Work of Human Hands Sale where you can buy delicious Divine Chocolate, fair trade coffee, and other fair-trade items that support artisans and farmers worldwide, a craft table for children to make Christmas tree ornaments, and more! Please come and join us. Alternate Gift Program SUNDAY MORNING DECEMBER 16 If you are looking for a unique way to give a gift at Christmas, consider making a monetary donation to St. James Social Outreach Committee and in turn be given a custom-made gift card that can be given to someone special on your Christmas list. Information on how your donation will be used appears on the back of the card. This makes a great gift for your friend and is a blessing for one of God’s beloved. The card is also appropriate for birthdays, anniversaries, retirements or other special occasions. Check it out on Sunday, December 16 from 8:30 am to Noon, or call Vicky Schoenberger at 703-532-7783 or Lori Lisiecki at 703-532-5357. Christmas Gifts for the Homeless DECEMBER 1 THROUGH DECEMBER 16 We support five homeless shelters in the area and at Christmas time provide NEW clothing to men and women. In particular, we are in need of: hoodies, jackets, shirts, socks, hats, scarves, other articles of warm clothing and undergarments. Boxes will be placed at the doors of the church to collect items through December 16. If you choose to wrap the gift, please label for gender and size. PLEASE NO USED CLOTHING. For more information, call Susan Jackson at 703-533-3482, Marian Starr at 703-237-0285 or Caroline Sparks at 703-237-2074. Homeless Shelters in Need of Personal Care Items DECEMBER 1 THROUGH DECEMBER 16 Area homeless shelters need personal care items such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, disposable razors, soap bars, and bath gel. Both travel and family sizes are welcome. Boxes will be provided in the back of church to collect these items. Adopt-a-Family Program NOVEMBER 25 THROUGH DECEMBER 16 Parishioners can provide much needed holiday cheer by sponsoring a specified family and ensuring they have gifts and a holiday meal for Christmas. Many of these families were previously homeless and need to conserve their income for rent, food and other necessities. Please help us provide gifts and clothing for children, and something for parents. You may do this as a family, or ask neighbors or friends to join you. (We can match you with other giving families). If you or a parish group would like to participate, please call Mary Ann Parker at 703-241-9128 or 202-434-2116. Christmas Collection for Ongoing Social Outreach Activities: You can make donations via Faith Direct by designating a monthly or one-time contribution; make out a check to St. James Church designated for Social Outreach programs, or place money in the Poor Box at the church entrance on the weekends. This money will be used to purchase groceries for the monthly Food Distribution and fund the Christmas party for families participating in the Food Distribution.
