NEW DELHI, Nov 17:
Delhi Chief Minister ArvindKejriwal today asserted that thereis a "very strong correlation"between stubble burning and pol-lution in north India as he attrib-uted the improvement in air qual-ity to dip in cases of setting cropresidue afire.
Kejriwal and the ruling AAPhave been at the forefront ofblaming stubble burning inneighbouring Punjab andHaryana as one of the major rea-sons for high levels of air pollu-tion during winters in Delhi.
"A very strong correlation canbe seen between stubble burningand the spike in air pollution inNorth India. As soon as stubbleburning began in the first week ofOct, the AQI started rising. Nowthat burning is coming to an end,air quality is also improving'" theChief Minister tweeted.
His tweet came in reply topictures of farm fires posted byJadmine Shah, Vice Chairman ofDelhi Dialogue andDevelopment Commission(DDC), a policy think tank of thecity Government.
"AQI levels dip to below 200(Moderate level) in most parts ofDelhi, exactly as farm fires
reduce to a handful in Punjab,Haryana and UP. These picturesfrom 10am today say it all," Shahtweeted along with pictures.
In another tweet, the ChiefMinister said, "The stubble burn-ing has stopped and with it, theair quality in Delhi has improved.A few people say that stubbleburning contributes only 5 percent to air pollution in Delhi. Sowith reduction of only 5 per cent, has the air quality indeximproved from over 500 to 200?Rather than doing politics on pol-lution, there is a need to addressthe issue together with goodintentions".
The BJP has been hitting outat Arvind Kejriwal Governmentfor "not doing anything" to con-trol air pollution in the past fiveyears and bringing in odd-evenroad rationing scheme asAssembly polls are approaching.
Senior BJP leader and RajyaSabha MP Vijay Goel said if theKejriwal Government thinksstubble burning is the main rea-son for harmful air quality inDelhi then why did it resort to theodd-even scheme.
The Delhi government willtake a final call tomorrowwhether or not to extend thescheme, which was implemented
from November 4-15, consider-ing the current situation of airpollution.
A Central Pollution ControlBoard (CPCB) led task force onpollution lifted the ban on theoperation of non-PNG industriesin Delhi and coal-based units inNCR as the air quality in theregion improved yesterday and isexpected to become better in thenext two days.
An India MeteorologicalDepartment officer has said thewind direction is north westerlyand surface wind speed is high.
Favourable weather is likelyuntil November 18 and there-after, the AQI may enter thehigher end of 'poor' category orlower end of 'very poor' catego-ry. (PTI)

FIR registered in connection with ‘vandalism’ of JNU’s admin block
NEW DELHI, Nov 17:
The Delhi Police has regis-tered an FIR in connection withthe "vandalism" of administra-tion block of the JawaharlalNehru University (JNU) lastweek, officials said today.
A complaint was submittedby the chief security officer ofthe JNU on Thursday evening,following which an FIR was reg-istered against unidentified per-sons yesterday, police said.
The administration had sub-mitted photographic and video-graphic evidence in the matter.
On Wednesday, students hadpainted various messages for theVice-Chancellor inside theadministration block as theybarged inside the building to talkto him about the hostel fee hike.
The administration hadannounced a partial roll back but
the students dubbed it as an "eye-wash".
The students have been occu-pying the administration block,also referred to as Pink Palace,and have painted messages onthe walls of the administrationblock and near the entrance ofthe VC's office. They aredemanding that the hostel feehike be rolled back fully.
The left-backed All IndiaStudents' Association con-demned the registration of theFIR.
Two other complaints -- oneby Professor Buddha Singh,chairman of Swami VivekanandaStatue Installation Committeeand another by Bharatiya JanataYuva Morcha -- were filed onSaturday against "objectionable"messages written on base of astatue of Swami Vivekananda.(PTI)
