Trainer George Papaprodromou wanted to try Iron

Rob on the turf following a disappointing seventh

in his first start against winners in a January allow-

ance race, so he picked the Feb. 21 Baffle Stakes, a

sprint down the Santa Anita Park hillside turf course.

When the Baffle was taken off turf, Kretz Racing's

colt still thrived, winning by a half-length.

So, back to the dirt Iron Rob went in the San Pe-

dro Stakes March 20, and he again exceeded expec-

tations. He dueled for the lead through speedy frac-

tions (:21.91 and :44.55) and upset heavily favored

Denman's Call by 1 1/2 lengths at odds of 9-1.

Sometimes, things just work out.

"Pedigree-wise, we wanted to try him on the turf,"

Papaprodromou said. "That didn't work out, so we

went back to the dirt. So far, so good."

The victory also gave jockey Stewart Elliott his first

stakes win at Santa Anita, where he has been riding

since January.

One of three stakes winners to date from the first

crop of Twirling Candy, Iron Rob was a $90,000 buy

at the 2015 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. April sale. BH

LAYOFF NO PROBLEM FOR FANTASTIC STYLEBy Jeremy Balan

With the key scratch of impressive last-out

allowance winner Sensitively, Fantastic

Style performed appropriately to her 1-2 odds

in the Las Flores Stakes (gr. III) March 20 at San-

ta Anita Park.

The 4-year-old Harlan's Holiday filly stalked

the early pace and pulled away easily in the

stretch to win the six-furlong sprint by four

lengths from grade III winner Ben's Duchess.

"She's been working really well in the morn-

ings, so I just think she's getting better and bet-

ter," said jockey Rafael Bejarano, who guided

Fantastic Style to the wire in 1:08.79.

It was the first start in more than eight

months for the Bob Baffert trainee, who was

last seen winning the July 11 Great Lady M (gr.

II) at Los Alamitos Race Course by 3 1/2 lengths

with a stalking trip.

"She just cruised," Baffert assistant Mike

Marlow said. "(Bejarano) was loaded all the

way. She was off for a while, but Bob had her

ready. She was really impressive. It was a good

comeback race."

Speedway Stable owner Peter Fluor said he

will defer to Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob

Baffert on whether Collected will proceed on the

road to the spring classics after the

colt's gate-to-wire romp in the Sun-

land Park Festival of Racing Stakes

March 20.

The City Zip colt, bred in Kentucky

by Runnymede Farm and Peter Cal-

lahan, was a $170,000 purchase at

the 2015 Ocala Breeders' Sale Co.'s

March sale of 2-year-olds in training.

He was selected by bloodstock advis-

ers John Adger and Marette Farrell.

"When we saw the horse at the

sale, we said that's a horse for Bob

Baffert," Fluor said of Collected,

who won the Sham Stakes (gr. III) in

January among three wins from five

starts.

Michael Tabor's Thrilled ($4) be-

came the sixth black-type winner of

2016 for Ashford Stud's Uncle Mo,

the current leading second-crop sire,

with her win in the Plum Pretty Stakes for 3-year-

old fillies.

Stalking pacesetter Family Tree from second,

she engaged that rival on the turn and matched

strides to deep stretch before pulling clear to win

by two lengths. BH

RACING REGULATORS TO MEET IN NEW ORLEANSBy Frank Angst

Racing regulators will hear from a wide range

of industry voices when they meet in New

Orleans March 22-24, as the sport continues to

pursue the ever-elusive goal of uniform rules.

The Association of Racing Commissioners

International Conference and Continuing Educa-

tion on Racing Regulatory Matters will begin with

organizational meetings the afternoon of March

22 before two full days of sessions. ARCI approves

model rules that its racing commission members

are encouraged to adopt.

Efforts toward uniformity have been empha-

sized in recent years under the National Uniform

Medication Program. A committee meeting March

24 will focus on changes to the current list of

therapeutic medications.

Conference speakers include Runhappy owner

Jim McIngvale, who will talk about his experiences

running the champion sprinter without race-day

INTERNATIONAL DOUBLE FOR TAVISTOCKBy Alastair Bull

Major victories in Australia and Hong Kong over

the weekend reinforced the growing stature of

the newest star at New Zealand's Cambridge Stud,

Tavistock (Montjeu).

Tarzino began the double March 19, adding the

2,000-meter (about 1 1/4 mile) Rosehill Guineas

(Aus-I) to his Victoria Derby (Aus-I) triumph last

November.

Werther completed the double when he won

Sha Tin's April 20 Hong Kong Derby, the final leg

of the Hong Kong 4-year-old Triple Crown over

the same trip as the Rosehill Guineas.

The Hong Kong Derby doesn't have interna-

tional group I status, but many of the runners

had international form. Werther ran second in

two 2015 Australian group I Derbys, and third-

placed Giovanni Canaletto (Galileo) ran third in

the 2015 Irish Derby (Ire-I).

Tarzino followed the 2015 Rosehill Guin-

eas victory of another Tavistock son, Volk-

stok'n'barrell, who in the past month has won

two New Zealand group I races.

With three crops of racing age, Tavistock has made

a grand start as Cambridge Stud's Sir Patrick Hogan

seeks a third outstanding stallion to follow Sir Tris-

tram and Zabeel. Both Tarzino and Werther are from

Zabeel mares.

Though Tavistock won two seven-furlong group I

races, many of his best stay past a mile. BH

AUSTRALIAN JUVENILES BOOST 'ARTIE'By Myra Lewyn

WinStar Farm shuttler Artie Schiller (El Prado) has

cemented himself as a leading sire in Australia,

where son Flying Artie finished third in the Aus$3.5

million ($2.66 million) Golden Slipper (Aus-I), the

world's richest juvenile race, March 19 at Rosehill.

Winner of the Blue Diamond Prelude (Aus-III)

before an unlucky second to Golden Slipper favorite

Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) in the Blue Dia-

mond (Aus-I), Flying Artie found only winner Capitalist

(Written Tycoon) and runner-up Yankee Rose (All

American) better, but banked Aus$310,000 ($236,000)

for his effort.

Flying Artie is from the fifth Australian crop of Art-

ie Schiller, the only sire with two runners in the Gold-

en Slipper. Skyline (Aus-II) winner Good Standing, not

quite ready for the high-pressure race, finished 10th.

Also on Saturday, precocious juvenile daughter

If Not Now When won the Aus$250,000 ($190,000)

VOBIS Gold Rush on debut at Bendigo.

A shuttler to Emirates Park Stud, Artie Schiller has

11 Southern Hemisphere stakes winners, including

2012 Rosehill Guineas (Aus-I) winner Laser Hawk. He

was leading second-crop sire in 2011-12 and current-

ly is fourth-leading sire of juveniles.

In the U.S. Saturday, 5-year-old son Sonny Inspired

captured the Ben's Cat Stakes at Laurel. BH

KANTHAROS COLT TOPS IN OBS PROFITABILITYBy Ron Mitchell

There is an adage that pinhookers—those

who buy horses as either weanlings or year-

lings and resell them—make their money when

they buy rather than when they sell.

That's because the process evolves as much

around what the horse cost to begin with as it

does what the consignor gets when the horse is

resold.

That was in evidence at the March 15-16 Ocala

Breeders' Sales Company's sale of 2-year-olds in

training with the auction's most profitable pin-

hooks. Although not the most expensive horse

sold at the auction, Hip 606, a Kantharos—Gra-

cious Assault colt consigned by de Meric Sales

produced the highest return on investment of

989%.

One of three horses to breeze the under tack

show's fastest time of :09 3/5 for an eighth of a

mile, the Florida-bred was purchased by Dennis

O'Neill for $550,000 for the partnership of Bill

Strauss, Al Gold, and Sol Kumin. Bought back for

$14,000 as a weanling consigned to the 2014 OBS

October sale, the colt was purchased by de Meric

for $30,000 at last year's OBS August yearling sale.

After subtracting the sales company's com-

mission of 5%, the Kantharos colt's net price

was $522,500. Deducting the consignor's total

investment cost (net price plus upkeep, which in

this case is estimated at $18,000 from yearling to

2-year-old) leaves a profit of $474,500. Kantharos

stands at Ocala Stud for a 2016 fee of $5,000.

De Meric Sales also had the second-highest

ROI with Hip 558, a Twirling Candy filly sold for

$825,000 on behalf of Machmer Hall Farm, which

bought her for $50,000 as a weanling. The ROI

takes into consideration weanling to 2-year-old

upkeep costs of $27,000.

Nick de Meric said his business plan is to set

reasonable reserves and position each horse so

that it finds a new home.

"We appraise them carefully and try to keep

our owners realistic with their expectations,

and we try to make the horses available for the

market. We're in the business of selling horses;

we're not in the business of buying them back,"

de Meric said.

Carrie Brogden, who operates Machmer Hall

Farm with her husband, Craig, said she changed

her mind about sending the filly to a New York-

bred yearling sale last year and decided to keep

her a little longer.

"She was headed for the van," Brogden said,

before she had her rethink. "I was just following

gut instinct." BH
