Lesson: Introduction and Review

● Large Group Bible Lesson - Today we will review the Fruit of the Spirit as a whole. The previous 3 weeks, the children have learned about Love, Joy, Peace, and Patience - but some children have been in Summer School and are just starting VBS today and we will take the week before off. So today is a great day to review! Spend about 15 teaching/reviewing the Fruit of the Spirit by having your students act out a skit or another fun activity.

○ Cute skit (or make up your own): https://drive.google.com/open?id=1vQsW3gcofXcms_h4oAPkOyrN4hdjiYt9

○ Supplies: Beanbag or yarn ball. GATHER the children in a circle. TELL them they are going to play a game of “catch” that will help them remember the fruit of the Spirit (Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control). REVIEW and repeat the fruit of the Spirit together once or twice to start. START the game by saying, “Love,” and tossing the ball to a child. INSTRUCT them to say, “Joy,” and toss the ball to a friend. CONTINUE in this fashion, prompting the children when needed. When the children get to “kindness,” instruct everyone to raise both arms over their heads and jump one time in place.REPEAT from the beginning right away, trying to get faster each time.

Lesson: Kindness and Goodness

● Large Group Bible Lesson ○ Use this time to Introduce the fruits of Kindness and Goodness that we will be learning

about this week. The attached “Believe” Curriculum Lesson 27 has some get resources for this time. A great option would be to use the wording in the “Come Together” section (step 1) and the skit (Option 6 - act it out) from the attached Believe Curriculum.

● Small Group Review Time ○ Object Lesson: http://penniesoftime.blogspot.com/2014/01/object-lesson-on-acts-of-

kindness.html?m=1 ○ Print and photocopy the Paper Hearts template and cut out the hearts (one heart per

child). If you have a good idea of which children will be attending, write each child’s name on a heart, allowing a few extra blank hearts to be filled in later for any additional children; otherwise, have a volunteer available to write each child’s name on a paper heart as children enter the room.

○ SHOW the children the basket of hearts. GIVE each child a turn to pick a heart with a classmate’s name on it out of the basket. READ the name aloud to the class. ENCOURAGE the child who picked the heart to say or do something kind to that person. It could be a compliment such as, “You are good at drawing,” or a statement such as, “I can help him tie his shoes.” GIVE each child a turn to pick a heart with a name on it and to receive kindness and goodness from their classmates. (As an option, larger groups can choose as many children as time permits, rather than every child, to say something kind)

● Craft - Friendship Bracelets

○ Supplies: Alphabet beads, colored beads, stretch cord (one 7” piece per child)

○ Prep: Cut the stretch cord into 7” lengths, and tie a bead securely to one end of each length.

○ TELL the children that one way to show kindness to others is by giving gifts. Handmade gifts in particular make people feel special because they show effort and love. SAY, We are going to make a friendship bracelet for a special friend in your life. Even though you have lots of friends, choose one you think would like to have a name bracelet. GIVE each child a length of cord with the bead tied at the end.

○ INSTRUCT them to string several non-letter beads on the bracelet, then string letter beads to spell the friend’s name, and then more beads, leaving about two inches free. TIE the free end to the secured bead at the other end, making sure the bracelet is the right size to slip on and off a child’s hand. INSTRUCT the children to give the bracelet to their friend this week, and encourage them to say something kind when they do so. (You are fun to play with; I like being with you; I’m glad you’re my friend)

Page 4: Monday, July 8 - Impact Houston...to play a game of “catch” that will help them remember the fruit of the Spirit (Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

● Game - The Kindness Game ○ Play this game (http://www.toddlerapproved.com/2018/01/kindness-challenge-play-

kindness.html) in small groups in the classroom. Print of several boards so multiple children can play at once

● Books of the Bible Activity/Snack -

○ Books of the Bible: Create a books of the Bible hopscotch

Lesson: David and Jonathan’s Son (2 Samuel 9:1-12)

● Large Group Bible Lesson ○ This is a great story to have your teens act out for our children. ○ If we could peek into God’s great big hear, we would see a wonderful heart that is kind

and good. God wants our hearts to look like this. When we choose to be kind, it is always the right thing to do. The Bible is full of stories about people who choose to be Kind. After Jonathan died, David thought about the promise that he had made to Jonathan when they were young men. David had promised to be kind to Jonathan’s family. He kept that promise by making sure that Mephibosheth’s family and servants always had everything they needed. (From the Believe Storybook Bible)

● Small Group Review Time

○ ASK, What kind of king was David? How can you tell? (He was good and kind; he did what was best for his people; he was a good friend; he kept his promises; he was generous)

○ ASK, Was King David kind and good only to his friends? (No) How do you know? (He was kind to King Saul’s family even though King Saul tried to kill him; he was kind to Mephibosheth even though he couldn’t walk or work)

○ Kindness Matters -Supplies: Red construction paper (one piece per small group), clear tape (one roll per group), pencils with erasers (one or more per group, depending on the size of the groups). Teacher prep: Prepare paper hearts by cutting one large heart from each piece of construction paper.

▪ DIVIDE the children into small groups of three or four. GIVE each group a paper heart, a roll of tape, and a pencil with an eraser (or more, depending on the size of the groups). SAY, Today we learned the importance of kindness. We all know that we should treat others with kindness, but we’re going to do an exercise to see exactly how important that is. INSTRUCT each group member to “hurt” the paper heart in one way (draw a mark with the pencil, make a small tear in the paper, fold or crumple the paper, etc.) SAY, These hearts are hurt. They are broken. When we are unkind to someone, we hurt their feelings and “break” their heart. INSTRUCT each group to pass their heart to another group, so each group has a different group’s “broken” heart. SAY, Now you may use your erasers or your tape to try to fix the heart.INSTRUCT the children to try to mend the heart they have, erasing pencil marks, smoothing out folds, taping tears or rips, etc. ASK, Did you do everything you could to fix the heart? Does it look as good as new? (No) SAY, Being unkind to someone really hurts their feelings. That’s why it’s so important to remember to always be kind to others with our words and actions! It’s also important to apologize when we say or do something unkind and try to help the person we hurt feel better.

Page 6: Monday, July 8 - Impact Houston...to play a game of “catch” that will help them remember the fruit of the Spirit (Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

● Craft -

○ Make a “Kindness Jar” to encourage the children to perform random acts of kindness. Gather several craft sticks and have the children write simple “kindness ideas” on each, such as “Give a compliment,” “Color a picture for someone,” “Help a family member,” etc. Put the sticks into a clean, empty jar that they can decorate with paint, markers, or paper. Encourage the children to choose a stick from the jar and carry out the action every so often at home.

● Game ○ Play some of these ball games and encourage the children to only use kind words while

playing: http://www.momentsaday.com/10-fun-ball-games-to-use-to-help-kids-practice-kind-words/

Lesson: Jesus talks about kindness (Luke 14:1-14)

● Large Group Bible Lesson

○ Introduce: David didn’t forget his promise to Jonathan. How kind of David to take care of Mephibosheth and be so generous with him. When Jesus came to earth, he often talked about being kind. He taught people to think carefully about how they treat others. He wanted everyone to find ways to be kind and good.

○ Simulate the situation the Jesus was in at the Pharisee’s house on the stage. Pick a few students to come up and choose where people are going to sit. Do they make the same choice that Jesus makes? Tell the story from Luke 14 to see if they choose correctly.

○ Conclusion: Jesus teaches us that being kind to everyone is the right thing to do. It's not always easy to do what Jesus asks. But as your grow up, try to be kind to everyone you meet. Perhaps if you see someone playing a long while you are playing with your friends, you could invite them to join you. Always look for ways you can be kind and good. When your heart is full of kindness and goodness, you will have a heart like God’s. (From the Believe Storybook Bible)

● Small Group Review Time -

○ • ASK, How did the Pharisees try to catch Jesus doing something wrong at the dinner? (They watched him closely; they didn’t answer his question; they got mad that he healed someone)

○ • ASK, What is the moral of Jesus’ story about choosing seats at a wedding? (Don’t lift yourself up but let others honor you instead)

○ • ASK, Who did Jesus want the host to invite to dinner? (The poor, blind, and disabled; people who couldn’t repay him)

○ Encourage the children to be “Kindness Secret Agents” - have them do acts of kindness for their big buddies, bus drivers, parents, etc but try not to be discovered.

● NO ROTATIONS ON THURSDAYS

STEP 1 | Come Together (10 min)

Supplies: Basket, Paper Hearts template

teacher prep: Print and photocopy the Paper Hearts template and cut out the hearts (one heart per child). If you have a good idea of which children will be attending, write each child’s name on a heart, allowing a few extra blank hearts to be filled in later for any additional children; otherwise, have a volunteer available to write each child’s name on a paper heart as chil-dren enter the room.

KINDNESS AND GOODNESS• GATHER the children.• TELL the children that today’s lesson is about kindness and goodness.• SAY, Jesus was a perfect example of kindness. One way he showed kind-

ness was by healing sick people.• CONTINUE, We can be kind like Jesus when we show kindness to

others. What’s another way to show kindness, besides helping someone who is sick? (Giving a compliment, including others, giving a gift, keep-ing a promise, sharing, etc.)

• EXPLAIN, So that’s kindness, but what’s goodness? (Pause) Part of goodness is learning to obey or to listen and do what is asked of you. Who do you obey or listen to? (Parents, teachers, authority figures)

• SAY, Did you know that even Jesus obeyed someone? Who did he always listen to and obey? (God the Father)

• EXPLAIN, The Bible says that God was pleased with Jesus because he loved God and did only what his heavenly Father told him to do. In the same way, we have the Holy Spirit inside of us, helping us to listen to God the Father and to obey him. When we do this, we share God’s kindness and goodness with the world!

KIND HEARTS• SHOW the children the basket of hearts.• GIVE each child a turn to pick a heart with a classmate’s name on it out

of the basket.• READ the name aloud to the class.• ENCOURAGE the child who picked the heart to say or do something

REVIEW• SAY, There are so many ways for us to show kindness! When we are

kind to one another, it makes God very happy. Today we’ll learn how both King David and Jesus showed kindness to others.

KEY VERSE• REVIEW this week’s Key Verse. You may want to repeat the verse

slowly a few times until the children are able to say it from memory.• NOTE: You may also choose to review last week’s Key Verse together.

1 Thes salo nians 5:15Always try to do what is good

(place hands flat on chest, one on top of the other)

for each other (point both index fingers toward others)and for everyone else. (open hands, palms up)

STEP 2 | Hear the Story (15 min)

Supplies: Believe Storybook Bible, PowerPoint slides or printable posters of illustrations

INTRODUCTION• TELL the children that they will learn how King David showed kind-

ness to the son of his friend Jonathan.• CALL a volunteer to stand up and represent King Saul. Have another

volunteer kneel in front to represent Jonathan and another to sit in front to represent Mephibosheth. Note that Mephibosheth had trouble walking.

• CALL one more volunteer to stand up as King David. Have him hold hands with Jonathan, reminding the children that they were best friends.

• HAVE King Saul and Jonathan lie down on the floor. Point out that they were killed in battle.

• ASK, What do you think will happen to Mephibosheth? Let’s find out!

READ CHAPTER 27• READ aloud chapter 27, “Kindness/Goodness,” from the Believe Story-

book Bible.

Obedience

Use two puppets or helpers to act out the following short skit.

Characters

props: Two puppets or helpers

Krista: What’s wrong, John? You look sad.

John: (Sadly) Aw, I’m in trouble. My parents took me to a really fun restau-rant with a playground inside. I thought we were having a great time, and I just loved it there, but my parents were upset. They said I have to learn obedience, but I don’t even know what that is!

Krista: At church, I learned that obedience is a great way to show that I believe in Jesus.

John: Let’s see . . . show that I believe. Well, I believe in Jesus, and I believe the Bible, but I’m not sure I was showing that at the restaurant. That’s why I got grounded. How can I show that I believe?

Krista: You could do what God says to do in the Bible, and do it happily. That’s what the pastor said to do.

John: Hmm, and I guess that means doing what my parents command as well. But I was kind of doing what they said . . . eventually . . . some of the time. Is that obedience?

Krista: No, I think obedience means doing what you should do immediately and all the time, not just when you feel like it.

John: Ah, that’s probably what got them upset. I wasn’t obeying immedi-ately, and I sure wasn’t joyful about it. What should I do?

Krista: Well, you could apologize to your parents, for a start. And then you could show them that you understand what obedience is now.

John: Okay! I can start being more obedient to God and to my parents. You sure are a big help, and you know a lot about obedience. Maybe you could come with me and my parents to that restaurant sometime.

Supplies: Family Page (one per child)

teacher prep: Print and photocopy the Family Page (one per child).

• GIVE each child a copy of this week’s Family Page.• SAY, Give this page to your family when they pick you up. It will

remind you to tell your family what you learned today about how God is good and kind and how we can be good and kind too.

• HAVE the children practice telling you about ways to show kindness and goodness.

How to Use This PageThis week, your family can either read the story from the Believe Storybook Bible or read the Bible Basis passages from your Bible to help your child remember the lesson. Use the Table Talk questions below to start a discussion around the dinner table, while driving in the car, or just about anywhere. The Living Faith activity is designed to remind your child of the Bible lesson through a drama or other engaging activity. The Extra Mile idea provides interactive ways for your child to connect with the story.

encourage your child to give it to that person whenever they choose. Your child could give a note of kindness to Dad after he’s had a stressful day at work. Or give a note of kindness to a sibling after they’ve fought over doing chores. Or a note of kindness could be given to Grandma when she is sick. Encourage your child to watch for signals that people in the family need an extra special helping of kindness.

Option 2Role-play the wedding meal that Jesus talked about. Use chairs around a table in your home. Make one chair the “best” by putting it in a good position and decorating it. Provide another chair that is clearly the “worst,” maybe far from the table or a low footstool used as a chair. Take turns with your child dressing up as the groom. The guest can choose a chair, and the groom can move the guest up or down, according to the parable.

Extra Mile• When it comes to obedience, it’s easy to focus on the negative (disobedi-

ence). Help flip your focus by creating an obedience jar. Use a glass jar and keep lots of change handy. Whenever you notice your child obeying (immediately, joyfully), drop a coin in the jar. They will become familiar with the little plink and know that they have done a good job showing obedience. When the jar is full, have fun thinking of a good way to use the money — perhaps donate it or buy a gift for someone.

• Praise your child for acts of kindness and goodness that you observe. If you anticipate a difficult situation, such as sharing a new toy with friends who visit, cue your child with a comment like, “I’m sure Tommy will like your car too. That will be a great chance to show kindness by sharing with him. Imagine how good everyone will feel when you show kindness!”

• Make a “Kindness Jar” to encourage your child to perform random acts of kindness. Gather several craft sticks and write a simple “kindness idea” on each, such as “Give a compliment,” “Color a picture for some-one,” “Help a family member,” etc. Put the sticks into a clean, empty jar that you decorate with paint, markers, or paper. Every so often, allow your child to choose a stick from the jar and carry out the action.

• Encourage your child to perform acts of kindness by being a “Secret Kindness Agent.” You may choose to use the same craft stick actions as in the option above, but challenge your child to complete these kind actions in secret, without ever being discovered. This will also help teach your child about being kind and good, without necessarily receiv-ing praise or a reward for doing so.
