NEW DELHI, Feb 7:
Terming as "unsatisfactory"the current pace of taxpayers'grievance redressal process, theCBDT has asked the IncomeTax Department to resolve thesecomplaints within a maximumperiod of two months.
In a urgent missive to allregional heads of department,Central Board of Direct TaxesChairperson Atulesh Jindal hassought a quick resolution ofthese complaints as it is a keyarea being monitored by theGovernment, with PrimeMinister Narendra Modi pullingup the department on this frontduring a meeting last year.
Recently, similar directiveswere issued to the Customs andCentral Excise Departmentsworking under the Central
Board of Excise and Customs. The CBDT boss has asked
the tax department officials totake up this job "on priority" andreport back on its compliance.
While the total number ofcomplaints pending in the ITDepartment are about 7,800, 81are pending for more than oneyear and 1,696 are pending formore than six months.
"Considering the fact thatour Citizens' Charter clearly laysdown that all grievances shouldbe disposed of within a period oftwo months, it is obvious thatthe overall progress on disposalof grievances is unsatisfactory....
"In spite of repeatedinstructions from the Boardfrom time to time, a large num-ber of grievances have notbeen disposed of withing theprescribed timeline of 60 daysfrom the date of their receipt,"Jindal wrote in a recent com-
munication to the PrincipalChief Commissioners of thedepartment across the country.
He said that in view of thissituation, it was necessary forthe regional heads to "personal-ly" monitor these cases anddirect their officers to attend tothese grievances "on priority".
"The grievances are requiredto be redressed within a maximumperiod of two months of theirreceipt. Further, if the finalisationof a decision on a particular griev-ance is expected to take longerthan two months, an interim replyis required to be given for delay inredressal of the grievance," thenewly appointed CBDT chief toldhis officers.
In order to ensure compliance,Jindal has asked that a report inthis regard should be sent to hisoffice by the end of the first fort-night of this month by each of theregional IT heads.(PTI)
