Biodiversity the wide array and assortment of species that are found in an ecosystem.
A decrease in an ecosystem's biodiversity will have a ripple effect through the entire ecosystem, affecting all species.
Nearly half of all prescribed medications are derived from plants.
Supplies inspiration for new advancements. Example: an adhesive from a mussel is being used as a pattern for a new coating for medical implants.
Loss of biodiversity reduces an ecosystems stability and makes it more difficult for the ecosystem to handle future change.

Example: Sri Lanka has been modernized and natural resources have been depleted.
• 95% of the tropical rain forests have been lost• 19 different frog species have gone extinct• Numerous other species are endangered
Currently about 1% of tropical rainforest are lost each year to logging and agricultural use.

Habitat Fragmentation a barrier forms that pervents an organism from accessing its entire home range. (Home range has to include areas large enough for migration and mating habits.)
Examples: Roads, harvesting of forests
Organisms affected include bears, deer, raccoons, elk, buffalo
Some states and countires provide habitat corridors, which are areas that go under or over roadways that are safe for animal travel.

Introduced Species any organism that is brought into an ecosystem as the result of human actions.
Also called invasive or nonnative species
Examples:
Burmese Python when people's pets become too large to handle, some owners release them into the wild of the Everglades in Florida. The pythons feeds on rats, birds, raccoons and dogs. They are becoming a major problem because they have reached a breeding population and are killing endangered birds that live in the Everglades.
Kudzu a plant intoruced in 1876 as a house plant and was planted as field cover to prevent erosion, but it rapidly spread. It can grow 60 feet in one season and it kills other plants and is resistant to most herbicides.
Mice In Australia they are a major pest because every 45 years they increase exponentially and have caused farmers up to $65 million in lost revenue from crops.
