Welcome to all children and parents, those returning and those who are new to our school communi-
ty. As you are aware, Peter Kearney, our College Director, has taken a year’s leave of absence to head
up the Australian Principals’ Federation, a great honour for both Mr Kearney and our school. He start-
ed in January this year.
Working with the Department of Education, we are pleased to announce our new Acting College Direc-
tor, Brendan O’Brien. Mr O’Brien will commence on 2nd March 2015. He has an excellent track rec-
ord of educational leadership, having been the Principal of Altona North Primary School for a number
of years, as well as holding two leadership positions within the Hobson’s Bay Network. His values are
very aligned to our College values and we are very pleased to welcome him on board.
I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Lesley Hall who has been doing a great job in the
interim Acting Director position.
I would encourage those who are new to the school community to get involved, be it through volun-
teering in the school canteen, taking an active part in our vibrant Parents & Friends organisation, or
volunteering your time and skills to the School Council.
At School Council, we play an important role in school accountability and improvement processes. We
are the governing body that endorse key school planning and policy documents, oversee the financial
statements and support the Principal and leadership team in providing the best possible educational
outcomes for students.
At the close of the current term there are 4 vacancies in the Parent Member Category and 2 vacan-
cies in the DET Member Category. The new term for these vacancies will be 2 years. In the Parent
Member Category, the following School Councillors current term is at an end: Suzy Dailey, Tanya
Staehr and Chris Woods. From the DET Member Category, Kay Kearney and Sandy Naughton’s terms
are also at an end. I would like to thank you all for your valuable contributions.
School Council meets twice a term. We now seek interest and nominations from the school
community to fill the 4 Parent Member vacancies. Skills in areas listed below will be well regarded:
Governance
Finance / Accounting
Marketing
Policy
Please see how to get involved in the newsletter.

It was great to see so many families attending the Student Learning Conferences on Thursday evening. We all
know that the most successful students are those whose Parents take an active role in their child’s education.
Here at Carranballac F-9 College we believe the partnership between the school and the parents is invaluable
in supporting positive educational and social outcomes.
Thanks to the Parents and Friends for arranging the family picnic providing an opportunity to meet and mingle
with other Carranballac F-9 College families.
Fortunately the weather has been fairly mild but the hot weather is on its way. I would remind parents that as a
Sunsmart School the college implements a “No Hat, No Play” policy, we also have sunscreen available in class-
rooms for students use. Please remind your child to “Slip, Slop, Slap.”
You will notice “Every Minute Counts” message is included in this newsletter and on posters around each
school, please take time to read them. This follows on from the Department of Education and Training’s mes-
sage of “It’s Not OK To Be Away”.
The school yard is supervised from 8.30am. Any parent who needs to drop of their child before this time should
enrol their child in the Out of School Hours Care program. At the end of the school day if you collect your child
could you please let the office know if you are going to be later than 3.15pm so that your child can be informed.
If this will be a regular occurrence please enrol your child in the Out of School Hours Care program.
Also in this newsletter is information pertaining to the upcoming school council elections. Please consider nom-
inating for a position. If you have any questions or are interested in standing for a position
please contact me on 9395 3533.

School Council Elections 2015
What is a school council and what does it do?
All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given
powers to set the key directions of a school within statewide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.
Who is on the school council?
For most school councils, there are three possible categories of membership:
• A mandated elected Parent category – more than one third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Training (DET) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not engaged in work at the school.
• A mandated elected DET employee category – members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.
• An optional Community member category – members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members.
Generally, the term of office for all members is two years. The term of office of half the members expires each year, creating vacan-cies for the annual school council elections.
Why is Parent membership so important?
Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school.
Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.
How can you become involved?
The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant.
In view of this, you might seriously consider
• standing for election as a member of the school council
• encouraging another person to stand for election.
Do I need special experience to be on school council?
No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future.
What do you need to do to stand for election?
The principal will issue a Notice of Election and Call for Nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March unless the usual time line has been varied by the Minister.
If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nominate yourself in the Parent category.
DET employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not engaged in work are eligible to nominate for parent mem-bership of the school council at that school.
Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the Notice of Election. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt in the mail following the receipt of your completed nomination.
Generally, if there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed.
Remember
• Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do
• Consider standing for election to council this year
• Be sure to vote in the elections.
Contact the principal for further information.

Jamieson Way School Report—Principal Sandy Naughton
Thank you to those families who were able to attend Student Learning Conferences last week. Individual Learn-
ing Plans will be sent home shortly. Having clear understandings and agreement between home and school
about the goals for each learner provides a very strong basis for progression as a learning community.
Our Foundation students are doing well easing into school, with Wednesdays still a break for them to help them
build up the capacity to attend a full week.
A reminder to our Middle Years students that our school day begins at 8:45am. Our older students are usually
responsible for getting themselves to school in the mornings. We will be communicating with the parents of
students who are late for school, asking these parents to reinforce our expectations that all students arrive be-
fore the bell.
Please be mindful of our neighbours when you are parking around the school. Parking across driveways is not
the profile we want for our families.
Enjoy the summer evenings with your young.

Boardwalk School Report— Principal Kay Kearney
Thank you to all parents and guardians for you input into the Student Learning Conference last week.
If you were unable to come last Thursday please feel free to contact your child’s teacher to make suit-
able arrangements to meet them.
Thank you for your support with our uniform expectations. This helps our students take pride in them-
selves and our College.
Posters from the Department of Education and Training have been placed around the school drawing
our attention to “Every Minute Counts”. The main message is that students need to be in class on
time
every day so that classroom activities begin promptly and run smoothly throughout the day. We all
know how frustrating it can be when people arrive late to a meeting and how difficult it can be for the
latecomers to catch up with the conversations. It is the same situation in our classrooms. So please
ensure your child is in class on time to maximise their learning time.
Enjoy the rest of the week!

School.

Science & Sustainability
Applications for Student Environment Council 2015
Successful applicants for Student Environment Council positions will be announced at next Monday’s
assemblies. The students will begin their roles this week, commencing with the organisation of Clean up Aus-
tralia Day.
Clean up Australia Day
Clean up Australia Day for schools will be held by Carranballac F-9 College on Friday 27th February between
9.00am and 10.45am.
As we have done for some years now, students in Foundation to Year Two will clean up their internal school
site, Years 3 & 4 will work along their school fence-lines or adjacent areas, while students from Years 5-9 will
clean up away from the schools, around the local wetlands, parks and reserves.
All students will receive instructions on how to pick things up, and what not to
pick up. Plastic gloves will be provided to students for the activity. Students
need to be sunsmart. SEC students will carry out promotion prior to the event
and will complete Tangaroa Blue litter surveys while their class is carrying out
their job on the day.
Wyndham City will be offering support for schools who are participating in
Clean up Australia Day 2015, including equipment, rubbish pick up, recycling
and disposal.
Chicken Program
The chickens at Boardwalk School are progressing well back at school. They took a day or two to settle down ,
not laying eggs for that days or so.
Progress on the new cage at Jamieson Way School has been held in abeyance till the weather cools down.
Improvements to that cage include:
shadecloth for shade in the short term
a climbing grape vine or similar inside the cage
other plants for shade and shelter
Hay or straw coverage on ground
Chickens to be introduced in a few weeks.
Plastic Recycling
Clear clean plastics are still being collected but we have only red bins now, and no
cardboard boxes. Opaque plastics, or slightly coloured plastics are also able to be in-
cluded. No foil–lined plastics, no greasy, food stained or dirty plastics please.
One large bin is close to each canteen, while a small bin is near or inside a staffroom.
