Yesterday we looked at the wonders of the world and learnt the difference between the natural and human made wonders. Today you will think of your local area (Greenwich, London or England).
Task 1 Make a list of the local wonders. Before you start, think about what places do you admire in your local area.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
LI: to list local wonders.
Task 2 Design your own wonder of the world.
It does not have to be made by nature but it does have to be admired by its beauty or surprise by how unexpected it is.

Success CriteriaI can identify the parts of a musical instrument.I know how the different parts creates sound.I can design my own musical instrument.

LI: to design a musical instrument made from recycled
materials.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Think about the type of instrument you would like to make.
Will it be a string instrument? A shaker? A drum?
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Drums Drums are a percussion instrument.
Percussion instruments are played by
hitting them with your hand, a stick or a
beater, or by shaking them.
Drums can be played with your hands, a
beater or a drumstick. They are often used
to keep a steady beat in a piece of music.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
MaracasMaracas are a percussion instrument.
They make a sound when you shake them.
They are a type of rattle.
Maracas are usually oval or egg-shaped
and have beads, beans, or small stones
inside them which make the sound.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
CastanetsCastanets are a percussion instrument.
They make a sound by being hit together.
Castanets are made up of two wooden or
plastic parts, joined on one edge by a
string or a handle.
You hold them in your hand and shake or
tap the shells together to make clicking or
rattling sounds.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Guitar
The guitar is a tuned instrument.
It is a string instrument which is usually
played with a pick or sometimes played
with the fingers.
The strings of the guitar vibrate when they
are plucked. String instruments play
different sounds. The tighter, thinner or
shorter the string is, the higher pitched the
sound will be and the looser, thicker or
longer the string is, the lower the sound will
be.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Your task
Sketch the instrument you have chosen to make.
Label the features and what materials you will use.
Choose your materials – look for things that you think will make an interesting sound when you bang or shake them. What materials would be good to make the type of instrument you want?
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Materials
Elastic bands – good for strings to pluck
Cardboard box
Plastic bottles
Bottle topsRice Sand
All of these materials could be used to make a shaker. The different materials will make a different sound. The small particles in the sand are likely to make a softer sound than the rice or beads.
Beads
These are good for the ‘body’ of your instrument
Can you think of any more? Research some ideas

Cardboard box -Need to make a hole if there isn’t one
Strings – needs to be stretchy elastic?

Your taskMake the instrument you have chosen.
Try to follow your sketch but think about
whether you have different materials that could
be used.
The next slides provide some guidelines to
making drums, castanets and a guitar.
Once it has been made, test and evaluate your
instrument using the questions on the last
slides.

Is my instrument comfortable to play?Does my instrument make a good musical sound?Does it look attractive?Does it work in the way it was supposed to?
If you answered no, can you think of what you would change?
Do you think a different material would be better if it was available to you?
