PLANNING SCHOOL VISITS FOR 2018 Last year the Domestic Student Recruitment team visited or hosted around 300 schools. We are looking forward to another year of working with you and your students.

In order to support the process, please see the guidelines below to help with your planning for 2018.

Whilst we aim to accommodate all requests, our capacity to meet them is limited during peak periods throughout the year. For example, we may only be able to attend/support events at your school every alternate year. When planning for any on-campus events, school based presentations or expos in 2018, we ask that you consider the following information.

Term 3 Events – Year 12 Priority The first few weeks of Term 3 are the busiest of the year. We receive over 120 invitations for events during this time, so there are many activities we are unable to attend. At this time of year, we prioritise events focusing on Year 12 students or events including multiple schools.

Year 10 subject selection events If you are planning an event around Year 10 subject selection, please consider holding these during early Term 2, as this will enable us to meet more of these requests.

On-campus visits Current Monash students completing their degrees have priority to facilities on campus for teaching purposes. This means that access to venues for ad hoc activities is limited during semester time. In 2018, Semester 1 runs from 19 February to 25 May and Semester 2 runs from 23 July to 19 October.

We recommend planning campus visits during non-teaching times. Alternatively, we would appreciate at least 4 weeks’ notice for any on-campus events you are planning. We may not be able to confirm these visits until we are able to secure venues. Year 10 on-campus visits are encouraged in Term 1 and 4 and are subject to venue availability.

Due to the new schools safe regulations, teachers must stay with their students during school visits at Monash including campus tour activities.

We also request that teachers monitor student behaviour while on campus and ensure that students are respectful of staff, other students and of the environment they are visiting.

To view non-teaching times, please visit monash.edu/students/dates/summary-dates

Years 7 – 9 Please note that students in Years 7 to 9 are encouraged to attend Open Day, Inside Monash seminars, as well as other events advertised in the Monash Update. Unfortunately, we are unable to host Years 7 to 9 cohorts on campus or attend events solely for these year levels.

Tertiary Information Service (TIS) Guidelines for Events As a member of the Tertiary Information Service (TIS), we operate under the guidelines recommended by the TIS Management Committee. Visit tis.org.au for more information.

Between May and August each year, Student Recruitment Officers from most tertiary providers attend up to 200 different events, with some staff attending evening events up to three nights per week on top of their normal working hours. Hence we adhere to and recommend the following for all events:

• We will only be able to attend events and expos until 8pm. Please highlight this requirement to other staff, students and parents attending events. • Event duration of two hours is ideal for expos. Evening expos between 4-6pm or 6-8pm are preferred, but we also encourage daytime events. • Presentations should be held either before or after an expo. • Working collaboratively and including neighbouring schools in school expos.Expos that include more than one school community will generally be given priority. • Offering a school expo in alternate years while a neighbouring school offers the expo in the other years. • Consider the date of your event. Many events are booked in May, July and August, a time when most institutions have Open Days, which can limit staff availability. Events in March and April could work better, with students and parents encouraged to attend Open Days in July and August. • Provisions need to be made to assist representatives in getting their equipment into and out of venues. Practicalities such as stairs and distance between the venue and parking should be considered and advised in advance of our representative attending. Adequate lighting and directional signage should be considered when choosing venues.

Thank you for your consideration of these suggestions. We enjoy connecting with you and your students and will do what we can to support your requests for 2018.

GENERAL UPDATES

MONASH RESIDENTIAL SERVICES – ENGAGING WITH NEW RESIDENTS The start of a new year at Monash Residential Services (MRS) is always an exciting time as we welcome new and returning residents into our on-campus accommodation at our Clayton and Peninsula campuses.

MRS understands that moving away from home to study is a big change for students. To assist new residents in their transition to living on campus, MRS runs a two week Orientation Program from mid-February, with a huge array of activities and events to ensure those arriving for the first time make lots of new friends, both within their hall, as well as with other residents on campus.

The MRS Orientation Program also includes some mandatory training for all residents to assist them with living independently and making the right choices, ensuring they have the knowledge and skills to be part of a safe and respectful community.

Students can visit monash.edu/accommodation to get a feel for the living on campus at Monash.

LIBRARY | TAKE A STEP BACK INTO THE WORLD OF JANE AUSTENHave you been enchanted by the lively Elizabeth Bennett, intrigued by the brooding Mr Darcy, or inspired by the sweet natured Anne Elliot?

These and other characters come to life in Jane Austen: By a Lady, a free exhibition now showing at Monash University Library. Celebrating the life and works of one of the greatest writers in English history, the exhibition immerses visitors in the history, culture, geography and lifestyle of Austen’s world in the late 18th and early 19th centuries providing a wonderful opportunity for students who have a love of literature.

Following a successful stint at the City of Melbourne’s Library at the Dock, the exhibition has now been adapted and enhanced for presentation at the Sir Louis Matheson Library, Clayton campus. Featuring interactive media content designed by Master of Multimedia Design students, visitors can interact and engage with Jane Austen and her characters in exciting new ways. The exhibition also displays rare editions of Austen’s novels and historic works on the Regency period in England from the Library’s Rare Books Collection and the personal collection of Emeritus Professor Chris Browne.

The exhibition presents an exciting opportunity for visitors to be inspired by the interactive media creations of Monash students and their lecturers, and highlights the possibilities that emerge when historical collections and new technologies unite. We welcome group visits to the exhibition, and promote a self-paced, immersive and exploratory experience.

Whether your interest is in English literature, technology, design, or history, we encourage you to visit this new exhibition now showing at The Gallery, Sir Louis Matheson Library, 40 Exhibition Walk, Clayton campus until 29 March 2018.

Please contact [email protected] for more information about group visits or to make a booking.

MNHS | ARE YOUR STUDENTS CONSIDERING STUDIES IN NURSING OR ALLIED HEALTH?Monash Peninsula is home to a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences including paramedicine, nursing and midwifery, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

Located in Frankston, our Peninsula campus is a great place to study, offering all the amenities your students will need within a small, friendly community.

Taking a multidisciplinary approach, our courses provide students with the opportunity to learn alongside their peers in other areas of health.

Michael Larin, Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery graduate, found the perfect blend of his passions, science and health, when he decided to study at Monash’s Peninsula campus. “I wanted a secure career so I chose nursing and I’m further challenging myself by doing midwifery as well,” he shares. “I’ve really enjoyed the family-like atmosphere of Peninsula campus and the friendships I’ve made.”

Jessica Harvey, a third year Bachelor of Occupational Therapy student, says “transitioning from high school to university was a scary thought, however the beautiful and intimate environment of Monash Peninsula made the move fun and enjoyable. The classrooms are easily accessible, the staff know me by my first name and I feel a real sense of community.”
