Display Cars. (Rare Spares Voucher for members cars.)

A fine pair of almost identical white HQ LS vehicles.

Dennis exhibited his 1973 HQ LS Monaro. He described finding it while camping at Nagambie. His son had spotted it in a wreckers yard, so the decision was made. Hiring a trailer the next day saw the Monaro delivered home to Melbourne. It cost $1500, was in a filthy condition and needed rust cut out and panels replaced. All done by Dennis and son,Dave. The engine came out, it was sprayed with etch prime and then had to be garaged for 10 years until funds then became available.Parts were sourced such as GTS dash, factory air and power windows. It now has a new front end, adjusted by Centreline. A new paint job, vinyl roof and completed 3 years ago.

Malcolm and KB presented the other white HQ LS Monaro. He is the third owner, buying it from the local paper. The previous owner used it on a daily basis. The first owner installed various options on the car. Malcolm bought it in 1999, and it is unrestored. It is a 1972 model, 165000kms, with hot wire mags, and after market Air.

General Business

1. History of the MCoV: There is a proposal to write a History of the Monaro Club of Victoria, and to provide both printed and video versions. We are looking for Members to assist, particularly anyone with video shooting and editing expertise. We would also welcome help in sourcing equipment (camcorder, tripod, editing clobber – particularly anything that someone might be prepared to donate!). Contact Steve Kane (VP), or Phil Blake (Sec). All offers of assistance and suggestions most welcome.

2. A reminder to all members on CH plates. For all your correspondence to Paul Black address is PO BOX.5330 Clayton. 3168. For any other correspondence the usual PO address of Dandenong is applicable.

3. For any members wishing to share their stories about their Monaro, contact the committee and have your own history published on the web page.

4. At the last committee meeting it was decided to retire the Roger Jarman award. A new award Named after jean Currie is being instituted. The Barry Methven award also remains.

5. In the latest Just Holdens magazine is a transcript of a speech by Mike Devereux, in 2011 to the National Press Club. At the time Mr. Devereux was the boss of Holden. It is a very detailed description of a once great Australian industry, and puts into place the factors leading to its demise.

Website:

The website is now being used for online voting and membership processes. Due to Its increased sophistication other formats and processes will become apparent. Committee voting has been active on the club website, with no forms arriving by post. One member raised the idea of purchasing car tyres as a bulk/group and saving on what appears to be a considerable mark up in this country. Further discussions are to take place with the committee.

Arthurs Seat Eagle Cruise

“Oh what a lovely day” the first Club cruise for the year was an easy run down the Peninsula Link to the newly opened Arthurs Seat Eagle skylift, with us all parked together at the base station car park the weather was 10 out of 10 for riding in the gondolas to the summit were we had morning tea and then a look around for an hour or so before we descended taking in the vast views again from up above the trees.

Next into our preferred form of transport “Monaro” for a drive up the winding Arthurs Seat road to the top and then through the country side back to our house for BBQ lunch for all the Club members that came along, just a small group of nine cars filled up the back yard under the shade of the trees till they had to go.

Cheers Steve and Marlene.

I am the third owner of this 44 year old car. My car rolled off the production line on 9th November 1972 and was sold the same month by Preston Motors in South Melbourne. The car included many options including, power steering, aftermarket air conditioning, cloth seat inserts, bumper overriders, mudflaps. sun visor and a towbar. The sheepskin seat covers hotwire mags and rear louvre would also have been added early in the car’s life although the rear louvre now is not the original one.

I was told the first owner was a man in his 50’s from the Cranbourne area who owned the car until he tragically died in a house fire when he was in his 70’s. Luckily the car wasn’t damaged but the early documentation was probably also destroyed in the fire. The car was then put up for sale by the family at Shannon’s and was lot 4 at their 9th December 1996 Melbourne auction. At that stage it had done around 110,000km

The second owner also bought the car his early 50’s and owned it for about 3 ½ years. He used it as a daily drive between his home in Springvale South to work in the next suburb of Braeside but when he moved to Kallista in the Dandenong’s the daily drive to work in the Monaro became too expensive so he decided to sell it. When I went to look at the car I was impressed by how original it was and had to buy it. I arranged to catch a train to Belgrave station where I would pick up the car. I still remember vividly seeing the car drive into the station car park and thinking what a beautiful car and feeling so happy that I my dream to own a beautiful Monaro had come true. It had done around 142,000 km when I picked it up.

Since I have owned it hasn’t changed much, it has never been my daily drive but I have always looked forward to taking it out. It has been on short trips around Melbourne and longer trips into country Victoria. It has just clocked over 166,000 km. The car has had many admirers especially in the last few years with plenty of thumbs up, toots and compliments from strangers. The car revives memories for people and I’ve had many start talking to me about the time when they or someone they knew had a Monaro.

The only history I have on my Monaro LS Coupe, February 1973, Melbourne Build, 202 column shift trimatic

While on Christmas holidays 1998 I found my Monaro in the back corner on a wrecking yard at Nagambie Victoria in very poor condition with a no operational 253 V8. I convinced the wife we should buy it, she reluctantly agreed. The next day I hired a trailer and towed it home and returned to Nagambie the next day, when we arrived home from our holiday my wife walked past my pride and joy and did not say a word (oops).

With funds being a bit short I decided to do most of the repairs at home myself with the help of my son. Back to bare metal with paint stripper and jex, then a coat of etch primer in the garage (much to the delight of my neighbour). We cut out the rust and replaced it with new metal, we were able to borrow a spit. Then the rebuild started. We painted the underside and the whole body was painted with high in march 1999 and the Monaro was parked in the garage till June 2011. While in storage I was able to find a few bits and pieces.

HZ chassis rails all bushes and ball joints replaced and Pedders shockers Reconditioned the 253 Rebuilt power steering kit Front and rear power window 3.08 Salisbury disc brake rear end All callipers reconditioned and new rotors Factory air conditioning unit

In 2011 we started again as we could only hire the spray booth on Saturday afternoons and that was the only time David was available, the car was painted one panel one panel at a time. I left the new vinyl roof and trim work to the experts
