As early as 1843 he appeared before the public, with the greatest success, in Leipzig, where he excited Mendelssohn's interest. Until 1849 Joachim resided in Leipzig ; he then became Concert Director in Weimar, and in 1853 Concert Director and Court-virtuoso in Hanover, although his regular occupation here was frequently interrupted by musical tours extending throughout Germany, England and France. In 1868 he was called to Berlin as Conductor of the newly founded Royal High School for Music, which position he still occupies. Although much of his former time was occupied in composing, he has during recent years devoted himself to practical work, in which amongst the artists of the present day he takes the most prominent position. His execution combines the most exceptional technique with the finest expression, absolutely void of any attempt at ornamentation or flourish.

GRAMOPHONERECORDS.

This appears on every Gramophone

and Gramophone Record.

From time to time it has been our good fortune to be able to publish records made for us by nearly all the greatest artistes in the world of music, but we have never yet made an announcement with so much pride and pleasure as we now feel in giving to the world a series of records made for us by Mr. Edward Lloyd. His retirement from public appearances a short time ago left a very great gap in the foremost ranks of singers of the age-a gap which but for the Gramophone

could never have been closed. This gap will now, to a great extent, disappear by reason of the fact that Mr. Edward Lloyd has attended at our recording laboratory and has thus perpetuated for ever a voice which for many years has delighted and rejoiced vast audiences in whatever part of the world he has sung. It is indeed a veritable triumph for the Gramophone that

IMPORTANT ADDITION

GRAMOPHONERECORDS.

This appears on every Gramophone and Gramophone Record. Herr FRITZ KREISLER.

Yet another eminent violinist, in the person of Herr Fritz K.reisler, has recognised in the Gramophone the only means of handing down to posterity an exact reproduction of his art. It is with very great pleasure that we draw attention to the undermentioned four records made for us by this celebrated young violinist.

Fritz Kreisler was born in Vienna on February 2nd, 1875. When very young, he commenced his studies under the celebrated masters Hellmesberger and Auber, and at the age of ten took the first prize at the conservatoire in Vienna. He then went to Paris to study under Delibes and Massaert, where he carried off the first prize at the conservatoire against a very large number of competitors, all of whom were many years his senior.

Kreisler has toured in America and practically all over the Continent, being received everywhere with the greatest enthusiasm. Although only a short time has elapsed since his first appearance in England, his position as a leading

virtuoso is already secured, and his appearances in London and the provinces always meet with conspicuous success.

The Records are 10 inch size, Price 5s. each, the titles and numbers being as follows :

G.C. 47944 Chanson sans parole (Tchaikowsky). G.C. 47945 (a) Sarabande (Sulzer) ; and (b) L'Abeille (Schubert).

G.C. 47947 Air (J. S. Bach).

These Records are included in our regular Supplementary List for April.

Daily Express" interviewing the greatzst prima donna the world has ever known :

"As the interviewer rose to go the great singer remarked, with a smile, `And now would you like to hear nie sing a song?' Then she led the way to her sanctum. There was a semi-grand piano in the room, but to the interviewer's surprise, instead of going to that she walked up to a Louis Quinze pedestal upon which stood a vase overflowing with roses. Carefully removing the vase, she raised a lid, and a brass trumpet swung round into sight. Then, pressing a button, there issued the voice of Mine. Melba, swelling and sinking in the cadenza of Handel's `Sweet Bird.'

"And no sooner did the trill commence than a pet canary, loose in the room and perched on the top of a book-case, joined its clear note in joyous rivalry. It was, indeed, an amazing reproduction of an amazing voice.

"' Can any one obtain these gramophone records?' asked the astonished interviewer.

"' No,' she replied, and with a pathetic smile at the photograph of the grey-bearded man on her writing-table, added, `they are only for my father.'

"Then, with a note of enthusiasm in her voice, she continued: 'Is it not wonderful that one can send one's voice ten thousand miles across the sea ? Only think of it, all future generations of my family will for ever be able to hear my voice.'

"' Surely,' remarked the interviewer, ' the company who made these records must have been approached with a view to their public sale ?'

"Mme. Melba laughed merrily. 'The truth is,' she said, 'since it became known that these records have been made I have been inundated by letters from strangers asking if they can be bought, and also from representatives of voice-reproducing machines making flattering but not sufficiently tempting offers. Only the other dry one of the latter came and asked me to name my own price. I did so. The gentleman left me more in sorrow

than in anger.'

HEALTH IN PLAY FOR CHILDREN.THE GRAMOPHONE AS INSTRUCTOR AND ACCOMPANIST.

W E have for some time been engaged in the production of a new Manual of Physical Drill for use in Schools, Nurseries, etc., and a set of Records as a musical accompaniment to same. This Manual has been prepared for us by Professor A. Alexander, F.R.G.S., Principal

of the Southport Physical Training College. Author of ,Musical Drill," " New Games and Sports," " Modern Gymnastic Exercises," " Physical Training," etc., and who is perhaps the greatest authority on Physical Training of the present day.

The Idea of using the Gramophone for this purpose will appeal to all. The Teacher and Parent will hail it as a simple and effective method of accompanying the Drill, and at the same time embodying Health, Amusement, and Interest to the Pupil. What child will not be only too ready to Drill to the Music of a Gramophone. The Records-of which there are nine in the present series-have been made by the Band of His Majesty's Coldstream Guards, and the tunes and time have been very carefully arranged by the Author of the Manual. Each Record is divided into parts-each being of the requisite length and correct time for each respective Drill, and a pause is `made between each tune to allow the class to come to attention ready for the next exercise. Full instructions are given in the Manual at the beginning of each Drill as to which Record, and what part of same is to be used.

We have further constructed a Special Machine, complete with Tapered Arm and Stand, which is called "The Scholastic Gramophone." Special attention has been given to simplicity and convenience, the price being within the reach of all. The following is an illustration of same.

"Zne Scholastic

This Machine

complete with Stand, Manual,

and Set of Nine Records.

It is acknowledged by experts that in the future Vocal Accompaniment will form a part of every kind of Drill, for it is of great importance not only to the physiological conditions of the organs, but it is

also of the greatest value to the entire muscular system. In the Manual we publish are given the words of the Musical Accompaniments.

THE GRAMOPHONE AS ACCOMPANIST FOR DANCING. We would call attention to our list of Records made specially for Dancing by the celebrated

Bohemian Orchestra, comprising Waltzes, Polkas. Barn Dances, Mazurkas, Two Steps, Lancers, Quadrilles, etc.

How often it happens that at a gathering of friends. or even in the home circle, it is desired

to get up an impromptu dance to pass a long winter evening, but found impossible for the simple reason that there is no one to accompany, or no music at hand-it is then that the boon of having a Gramophone is felt. The Gramophone is ever ready and untiring, and will play anything from a simple Polka or March to a set of Lancers or Quadrilles.

We believe that it will be necessary for our loyal Gramophone dealers to

have a really cheap line of genuine goods for the coming big autumn business.

From October 13th all style No. 3's have been invoiced to our dealers

P R E S E N T E D I T 0 RI S N 0 T E.

During 1904 the Gramophone and Typewriter Ltd. issued several editions of its catalogue

of twelve-inch Monarch Records (black label) and supplements. We choce the March edition

because it is both generally representative and compr, hensive. The Black Label yore many

famous names from all types of music. None is commonly found now,and perhaps those of the

Music Hall stars are the rarest. This writer does not kr..w of the existence of e.me of them,

for, being too expensive for most habituts of the Music Halls and not of the type of music for

those most able to afford them, their sales must have been small.

To the main catalogue we have added supplements together with other interesting leaflets

to give a general picture of the Gramophone Company in 1904. These include Dealers,

advertisements showing the Gramophones available, and a four-page booklet "The G2fa.mophone

Our of Doors" - so typical of the period. Unfortunately the latter was printed on

exceptionally thin paper allowing the printing to show through to "the other side".We confess

that in our reproduction of it we have not entirely overcome the fault, and also to masking

out a few details where the trouble was particularly had.
