THEATRE BY THE SEA, which is onthe National Register of HistoricPlaces, has had many incarnationsover the years. The property was pur-chased by the Tyler family in the early’20s. After Alice Tyler was left a widowwith three young children, she ran theproperty as a summer camp for girls. When the depression hit, she decidedto create jobs and provide a future forher children by turning the barn into atheatre. This year marks the 80thanniversary of Theatre By The Sea.The 300-seat theatre opened onAugust 7, 1933 with a productioncalled Strictly Dynamite. That initial

season lasted four weeks and fea-tured four different plays, one ofwhich was taken to New York. In1938, a Yale Cooperative took over. Then, on September 2, a hurricanehit. The back wall of the theatre cavedin and the stage roof was blown off.During the repairs, the theater wasexpanded to include a balcony. Thenewly enlarged theatre operatedthrough 1941 and then went dark dur-ing the war. In 1946, the theatre’smost glamorous and star-filled periodbegan. The theatre became what isreferred to as a “star-system” houseopening with a show called DreamGirl which starred Judy Holliday.Other headliners who were brought inwere Tallulah Bankhead, Mae West,Groucho Marx and Marlon Brando.Following the 1958 season, the prop-erty was sold to the Bontecou family, who leased it sporadically for severalyears, and by 1966 there were plansto tear down the theatre. Upon hear-ing that the theatre was to bedestroyed, Tommy Brent, who hadpreviously worked as a publicist forthe theatre, returned and saved thetheater from demolition. His first showopened on June 23, 1967 and he ranthe theatre successfully for twenty

two years. In 1988, FourQuestEntertainment, which consisted ofLaura Harris, (who had previouslyworked at the theatre for 11 sum-mers), Renny Serre and RichardEricson, came on board. Followingextensive renovations, FourQuestreopened the theater in the spring of1989 and continued producing highquality summer theater in Matunuckuntil the fall of 2003. The theatre wentdark once again until 2007, whenentrepreneur Bill Hanney purchasedthe property and, with producing part-ners, successfully mounted a produc-tion of ‘A Funny Thing Happened onthe Way to the Forum,’ just six weekslater, reopening the historic theatre onAugust 8, 2007. Theatre By The Seacontinues to annually produce a suc-cessful four-musical subscription sea-son.
