Sibling rivalries remediesPerhaps you have a new baby on the way and are feeling nervous about how your toddler might respond? Or do you have a preschooler and a toddler locked in combat most hours of the day? Know that you’re not alone and that the struggle is completely, noisily real …

When does it happen?

Some children get along well from day dot, while others (much to their parents’ distress) are less harmoniously matched.

Sibling rivalry is especially common when chil-dren are the same gender and/or close in age or when a new baby makes an appearance.

Kids are keen to commandeer their parent’s at-tention and confirm their place in their parent’s heart. They’re also seeking to define their indi-viduality and show they are separate to their siblings. Factors such as children’s temperament and personality quirks also come into play in sibling stoushes.

While this kind of rivalry may have mums and dads totally on edge, experts tell us that children are often much less bothered by these flare-ups and consider them a normal part of sibling life. Thankfully as social skills develop, sibling rivalry usually becomes less of a problem.

Softening the blow

It’s not really possible to rule rivalry out altogeth-er, because kids will indeed be kids, but there are a few commonsense things to be mindful of as you grow your family. Sibling rivalry rates are lower in families where kids feel they are treated similarly by both parents and where their place in the family is respected and valued. Keeping the playing field as even as possible is key.

It’s also important to monitor fights and help your kids to develop strategies for dealing with conflict. Don’t leave them to fight it out, but also be careful to referee any squabbles calmly and fairly.

If the fighting seems dangerous to either child, separate the kids immediately, allow things to calm down and discuss better behaviour when things are quieter.

Consider the behaviour you are modelling for your kids, too. If there is conflict in the home between adults, it’s not surprising that it may play out that way in children too.

Squabble-busting rules

Develop an age-appropriate code of conduct for your family, consider consequences and discuss them with your children. Some examples might be:

It’s not okay to touch your sibling in a hurtful way (kicking, pinching, hitting etc.)

It’s not okay to call each other mean names or say nasty things to hurt each other.

If kids are fighting over a toy, the toy will be put in ‘time-out’.

Fighting in the car means we have to pull over and wait until everyone is quiet.

We take turns deciding favourite things like din-ner, movies to watch or books to read. (Draw up a simple kid-friendly roster and put it where your kids can see it.)

In general

Talk to your child about their feelings and the cir-cumstances around their jealous flare-ups. Let them know that feeling jealous, angry or frustrated is nor-mal. Reassure them that they are equally loved and help them develop strategies for voicing their feel-ings more constructively.

Notice when your child is behaving nicely with their sibling and praise them for this kind or gentle be-haviour.

Never compare your children to each other. Cel-ebrate their efforts and differences.

THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE AND PRESSURE

OF EVERYDAY LIFE GETS TO ALL OF US

AND AT SOME POINT; WE ALL EXPERIENCE

STRESS. IF YOU FREQUENTLY FIND YOUR-

SELF DROWNING IN STRESS YOU COULD BE

AT RISK FOR HEART DISEASE, HIGH BLOOD

PRESSURE, WEIGHT LOSS OR WEIGHT GAIN

(DEPENDING ON YOUR BODY’S PHYSIOL-

OGY) AND DEPRESSION.

So what can be done? Goal setting and relaxation techniques reduce stress and ease the physical and emotional burden it can take. There are ways to tackle stress. Here are a few ideas to manage your stress:

1. KnoW youRSelf. The first step to managing stress is knowing what elicits the stressful feelings. Avoid the things that you know will lead you to feeling stressed. If you can’t avoid it learn some techniques that can alleviate the stress.

2. RelaxaTIon. Relaxation techniques are activities that produce a calming effect. These activities can help lower blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, and stress hormones. Yoga, deep breathing, and meditation are a few examples of relaxation techniques. Activities don’t have to be long. If you find yourself stressed at work and need a moment to decompress, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths or stand up and do a few stretches. When you are stressed your muscles get tense so stretching is a great way to recharge.

3. exeRCISe. Exercise increases your body’s

production of endorphins, a chemical in your brain that reduces pain and makes you feel happy. Exercise can also be a form of meditation. During a game of squash or just during a jog or walk you will often find yourself forgetting about your responsibilities and instead focusing on your body’s movements. With the combination of increased energy, improved mood and decreased tension, exercise is a great way to alleviate stress.

4. DIeT. During stressful times, we often turn to food for comfort, such as pasta, pizza or ice cream. Ironically, high fat, high sugarfoods are the worst things to eat when we are stressed. The best things to eat to reduce stress levels are low fat, high fiber, and carbohydrate rich foods. Eating a well-balanced diet filled with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains will boost your mood, energy levels and immune system to help you kick that stress.

5. Goal SeTTInG. Goal setting is associated to high self-esteem and a positive self- commitment. When a person sets goals, they feel in control and are optimistic of the future. The goals can be related to any aspect of life such as career, relationships, health and hobbies.Sources: mayoclinic.org, fortune.com

HEALTH DRINKS: WHAT SHOULD YOU BE DRINKING?

With the stream of so many drinks like teas, kombucha, coconut water, fruit juices, smoothies, protein shakes, and flavored waters, it’s confusing to know what is healthy and what isn’t. First and foremost, water is the best

drink for you. Water is cheap, accessible, and sugar and calorie free. It’s the perfect drink because it provides exactly what the body needs, restoring lost fluids, quenching thirst and restoring hydration. However, if you’re like most people you like variety in your drinks. Here are a few healthy drink options:

fRuIT InfuSeD WaTeR:If you are thirsty but need that extra some-thing to keep you satisfied, fruit infused water is perfect for you. Infusing water with fruits and herbs keeps you happy without the drawback of extra calories, sugars and sweeteners. Before making your drink, be sure to wash your produce to remove chemicals and pesticides. Softer fruits like lemon, lime, and berries can be sliced thick or thin, but harder fruits like apples need to be cut thinly because they take longer to release flavors. You can also add herbs such as: rosemary, ginger root, mint and basil to release oils.

KoMBuCHa:What is it? Kombucha is a fermented bever-age containing probiotics, antioxidants and polyphenols (micronutrients). The fermen-tation process creates large amounts of healthy bacteria that support the immune system. Other benefits include: nutrient absorption, decreased risk of developing allergies and diseases, body detoxing and increased energy levels. Warning – not all kombucha’s are created equal, so be cau-tious when choosing. Some kombucha’s may contain high amounts of sugar and/or a trace amounts of alcohol.

Tea:Tea is filled with many health benefits. Cer-tain teas contain antioxidants which help protect your body from free radicals and dangerous chemicals. Tea boosts the im-mune system, decreases the risk of cancer, soothes the digestive system, and is a great no-calorie alternative to water.

leMon WaTeR:Lemon water can provide some vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium. Lemon water boosts mood and energy levels, as well as your immune system (slightly). Some claim the drink improves mental and digestive health, and the high amounts of antioxi-dants help keep skin looking fresh. Resist the temptation to dump sugar into the lemon water. Once you drink lemon water without sugar a few times, you’ll find that it satisfies without the sugar.

CRanBeRRy JuICe:If you need some big flavors in your bev-erages, you won’t be disappointed with cranberry juice. Cranberry juice is filled with vitamin C, salicylic acid, and antioxidants. Cranberry juice improves cardiovascular health, dental health, and bone health. Aside from providing you with nutrients, it also prevents urinary tract infections, respi-ratory infections and cancer. Watch out for added sugar!

MIlK:Milk is rich in calcium, potassium, phospho-rus, protein, riboflavin, Vitamins A, D, B-12, and niacin. If you’re one with allergies, soy milk is a great option, it’s also packed with Vitamin D, protein and calcium. Because milk is high in calories, adults should limit their intake.
