Ralph and Barbara Rockow Honored with Reese Medal Ralph and Barbara Rockow have been awarded the 2015 Reese Medal by The Ohio State University. The Reese Medal, established in 1984 as the university’s highest honor in recognition of exceptional service in private philanthropy, was named in honor of the late Everett D. Reese, who exemplified the type of volunteer for whom this award was created.
Ralph and Barbara Rockow graduated from Ohio State in 1958. Ralph earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering and Barbara earned a B.S. in education. Ralph and Barbara have enabled opportunities and enriched experiences for numerous students. They endowed a scholarship fund in education and human ecology in memory of Ralph’s sister, Ruth Rockow Linville, and also established an endowed scholarship in engineering honoring Ralph’s former professor, Associate Dean Emeritus Marion L. Smith. Ralph is an enthusiastic supporter of the electric racecar student design team, and he has contributed to curriculum reform in mechanical and aerospace engineering.
Ralph has served on the Foundation Board and the Alumni Advisory Council and has remained dedicated to the College of Engineering through involvement on the college’s advisory board and campaign committees. He received The Ohio State University Alumni Association’s Citizenship Award in 1991, the John B. Gerlach Sr. Development Volunteer Award in 1999, and the university’s distinguished award in 2003.
Ralph and Barbara have been actively involved with the Ohio State Alumni Club of Phoenix, hosting engagements, raising funds to name “The Arizona Room” in Longaberger Alumni House, and made a leadership gift to name the facility’s boardroom. They have also made significant contributions to Scott Laboratory for mechanical engineering, Page Hall for the Glenn College, and the new Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Chemistry building, which is home to Koffolt Laboratories.
Congratulations to Ralph and Barbara Rockow for this well-deserved honor!

Team LightningBob Azeltine, Site Manager at Martinsburg Regional Airport, has been coaching soccer for the past five years. He volunteers his time to try and make a difference in the lives of children in his community. Mr. Azeltine says, “It is also a lot of fun, and coaching children’s soccer helps me get some exercise.”
After years of chasing the title and winning several second place medals, team Lightning won the championship this last season after a double overtime tie followed by a one point victory in a sudden-death shootout.

DSI and Air National Guard Upgrade Air Traffic Systems at Gabreski Airport, NYTogether, Dynamic Science, Inc., and the Air National Guard Bureau, 106th Rescue Wing, have been making state of the art upgrades to the Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems Equipment at Francis S. Gabreski Airport. Everyone has been working together toward upgrading the equipment and adding Air Traffic Control automation support in the Control Tower. Recently, DSI Technicians Pete Nichiporuk, Alex Morgan and SrA Shilo Watters from the 106th Communication Flight completed the install
of STARS, the Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System, which will provide enhanced functionality and efficiency within the National Airspace.
In the past few months they have also completed upgrades to the Digital Audio Legal Recorder (DALR) and the Enhanced Terminal Voice Switch (ETVS). The ETVS was installed by the Alpena CRTC including SMSgt Paul Coleman, TSgt Kenneth Gese and DSI technicians Nichiporuk and Morgan. Working together as a team, Dynamic Science, Inc., the Air National Guard Bureau, and the 106th Rescue Wing have worked in concert toward improving operational safety and support for their airport and its many users.
DSI Employees Receive STARS and TACAN Equipment TrainingDynamic Science, Inc. employees Morgan Gore (Gabreski Airport, NY), Todd Stone, and Brad Gloyd (Martinsburg Airport, WV), recently attended 24 hours of rigorous training focused on the maintenance of the Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS). Training was administered by Mark Neal of Air Force Flight Standards Agency (AFFSA) Headquarters, Oklahoma City, OK.
The STARS program utilizes RADAR to receive and process aircraft reports, weather, and other non-target messages from both Terminal and Enroute digital sensors, while also detecting unsafe proximities between tracked aircraft pairs and providing warning if tracked aircraft are detected at a dangerously low altitude.
Training consisted of detailed maintenance practices such as the removal procedures, installation procedures, and in-depth comprehension of the advanced circuitry and workings of the STARS. With the help of AFFSA’s Mr. Neal, DSI employees are now substantially more qualified and equipped to provide safe and reliable air traffic information to regional air traffic controllers.
In addition to the STARS training, DSI employees Morgan Gore and Pete Nichiporuk from Gabreski Airport, NY, alongside William Donahue and Jeffrey Marcotte from Burlington International Airport, VT completed a week long, Tactical Air Navigation System (TACAN) training class taught by David Deppen, also from AFFSA. The training provided will ensure that these DSI technicians will be able continue to provide exceptional support for the Air National Guard and any military aircraft utilizing the TACAN for navigation.
Alpena, Michigan / Alpena Air Traffic Control Tower – DSI’s latest site addition to the ANG ContractOn September 1, 2015, the Alpena ATCT located at Alpena, Michigan was added as the latest addition to the DSI/NGB contract. The Alpena ATCT is located on the base of the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC). Along with handling regularly
scheduled air carrier service and general aviation, the ATCT handles a large mix of military aircraft.
The Alpena County Regional Airport is a joint-use airport that is owned and operated by Alpena County. The airport has the distinction of being the host to one of only four CRTCs in the United States and is considered by many to be the “Gem of the North.” The CRTC is equipped with the latest DASR 11 radar, operates its own Radar Approach Control (RAPCON) and schedules/manages the largest Special Use Airspace complex east of the Mississippi. These key training attributes draw Air National Guard (ANG) units from all over the nation as well as elite Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines units and NATO coalition forces.
Mr. Timothy Snare is the DSI Air Traffic Manager responsible for the day-today operation of the control tower.
DSI Welcomes Project Manager Karen MurphyOn August 17th, Karen Murphy joined the Defense Technical Services Division as Project Manager. Her responsibilities include representing the division on all contractual matters supporting the Army Research Lab (ARL). Karen is an award-winning business professional with over seventeen years of program management and business development experience, with an additional seven years of environmental protection and safety focused technical work. Seventeen years of that experience took place at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), supporting the Army Research Laboratory and the Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC). Additionally, she served as a program manager for a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract at Fort Campbell, KY, and also several contracts at the Adelphi Laboratory Center. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Management. Welcome, Karen!
