The project is a collabo-rative effort with the “Health-e-Access” program led byKenneth McConnochie,MD. The proposed elec-tronic-oral-health-access
program (e-OHAccess) willcomplement the currentHealth-e-Access healthservices, which is already inplace at local Head-StartPrograms and overseen bypediatricians in the Univer-sity’s Department of Pedi-atrics. Dr. McConnochiehas been using commercial-ly available informationtechnology to enable clini-cians to evaluate and treatill children at distant childcare sites.

workers to enhance access and useof dental services to reduce oralhealth disparities for children. Thatis in addition to the Teledentistry inChildcare-Reducing Oral HealthDisparities in Young ChildrenProgram funded through an AetnaFoundation grant. This one-yearproject includes the installation ofdental cameras in up to seven inner-city daycare centers to facilitate anearly intervention mechanism todevelop a new strategy for the prevention and detection of child-hood caries.
We’re continuing to raise moneyfor a number of fellowship funds tosupport residents and internationalstudents in their education andresearch endeavors. Our givingtheme for this year is “Participationis Key ~ Every Gift is Important”and we are reaching out to alumni, friends, faculty, and staff to achieve30% giving participation. Our newWebsite makes giving easy throughan online form.
There are a number of alumniactivities planned for this yearincluding our annual AADR Alumniand Friends Reception in Baltimorethis March and numerous receptionsheld in conjunction with various program annual meetings.
I urge you to check our Websiteon a regular basis for news updates, photos of events, and upcomingactivities.
One of our newest initiatives isthe development of the DentistryHistory Project that began in 2003and is expected to be completed nextyear. The central theme of the proj-ect involves exploring the interplaybetween dental research, education, and community dentistry as well asthe interaction of EDC, SMH, andthe local and academic communities.
Dentistry is moving into an exciting and challenging time and we have much to accomplish. Iinvite you to join us in this effort as a member of the Eastman/Dentistry family.

to expand upon Dr. McConnochie’salready successful program and wouldfacilitate the development of an earlyintervention mechanism to reduce dis-parities and increase access to care forthe underserved.
The project is a novel approach tohelp inner city families easily accessthe care they need for their children inchildcare because its goal is to developa new strategy for the prevention andearly detection of early childhoodcaries (ECC).
ECC is an aggressive form of den-tal caries that occurs worldwide andaffects predominantly disadvantagedchildren. ECC has been described bythe Centers for Disease Control andPrevention as a virulent form of den-tal caries that can destroy the primarydentition of toddlers and preschoolchildren.
The project’s initial approach is toassess the ability of a pediatric dentistto detect signs and symptoms of ECCwhen images of children’s teeth andother relevant oral health data aretransmitted from the childcare centerto the clinic. In addition to remotesite diagnosis and treatment recom-mendations, other applications mayinclude remote site consultation.
The one-year plan includes theinstallation of a dental camera in up toseven inner-city daycare centers and adiagnostic station in the Division ofCommunity Dentistry and Oral
Disease Prevention at EastmanDental Center. The dentist utilizes a computer and camera connected to a Synchronous DSL high-speed internet connection (provided byFrontier Corp of Rochester) to exam-ine and interact with the child in real-time. A dental peripheral intraoralcamera allows for acquisition ofimages of the teeth and surroundingoral/facial tissues.
Daycare center Telehealth aideswill be trained to identify early signsof possible oral disease and to imagethe teeth and mouth for the dentist’sassessment and referral for treatment. It is envisioned that the teledentistrycomponent of Health-e-Access willhelp to identify children at risk forECC at an early stage, thereby reduc-ing the need for extensive dental care, particularly care that requires the useof a hospital operating room and gen-eral anesthesia, prevent long-term oral health problems for low-incomechildren, and serve as an educationaltool for parents.
Academic dental institutions are a safety net provider for the under-served and contributors to the well-being of their communities throughaccessible oral health care services.New models must be developed toensure oral health care for all in ourcommunity and e-OHAccess is onesuch model.

team of skilled specialists from Golisano Children’s Hospital at
Strong and Eastman Dental Centerprovides excellent corrective outcomesfor infants, children, and teenagers whohave craniofacial anomalies. Known asthe Cleft and Craniofacial AnomaliesCenter, it is affiliated with experts from the University of RochesterMedical Center.
John Girotto, M.D., chief cranio-facial/cleft and pediatric plastic surgeonat Golisano Children’s Hospital, workswith colleagues from neurosurgery, dentistry, genetics, speech therapy, otolaryngology, and oral and maxill-ofacial surgery to ensure the best out-come for each child.
“Each specialist is
uniquely quali-fied to evaluate,
treat, and care forchildren who havecongenital or
acquired cranio-facial anom-alies,” Girotto
says. “A teamapproach is
proven to be thebest way to helpthese children.”
When a childis referred tothe Strong
Center for Craniofacial Anomalies, ateam of physicians and practitionersconsult with parents, reaching consen-sus on an effective treatment plan. “Theparents and children feel less anxietyhaving met us, just knowing we arethere for them,” Girotto says. The team helps children who have cleft lips or palates, craniofacial clefts, hemifacialmicrosomia, craniofacial tumors, cran-iosynostosis, congenital birthmarks, deformities of the facial features, andother craniofacial syndromes.
Representing the dental specialistson the team are Mary Hauk, D.D.S.,and Jeffery Arigo, D.D.S. Hauk, apediatric dentist, trained at EastmanDental Center where she gave specialemphasis to caring for children who
have craniofacial disorders. Haukworks with babies as young as oneweek old, using an alveolar moldingtechnique to improve the skeletal andsoft tissue relationships of the jaw andnose, a process that assists Girotto’searly surgical procedures. “The mostimportant aspect for optimizing long-term results is to coordinate the dental, bone, and soft-tissue relationships,”Girotto says. “Dr. Arigo and Dr. Haukare our structural engineers.”
Arigo is a graduate of the orthodon-tic and dentofacial orthopedic residencyprogram at the Eastman Dental Center.Experts there are renowned for theirtraining and expertise in treating chil-dren who have craniofacial anomalies.
J. Daniel Subtenly, D.D.S., M.S., a pioneer in craniofacial orthodontics, has trained orthodontists at the Centerfor nearly 50 years. “The children wehelp are really getting the best of bothworlds,” Arigo says. “Not only can wetreat the individual, but we understandthe biology behind the problem, andthat’s crucial.”
The patient and his or her familyplay an integral role in the overall treatment decisions, Hauk says.
Team member StephanosKyrkanides, D.D.S., Ph.D., an ortho-dontist and coordinator of the cranio-facial research core at the EastmanDental Center, spends a great deal of time researching craniofacial devel-opment. “Our basic science researchfocuses on investigating the role of thenervous system in craniofacial develop-ment by taking advantage of the recentdevelopments of molecular biology andgenetics,” Kyrkanides says. “At thetranslational science level, our researchfocuses on developing gene therapy forthe treatment of craniofacial disorders, such as craniodysostosis.”
Whether they are working in a clinical setting or at the research bench, members of the Cleft and CraniofacialAnomalies Center are intent on provid-ing the best outcomes for children whoneed their expertise.

PROVIDING A DENTAL HOME FOR CHILDREN
Using outreach workers toenhance access and use of dental services to reduce oralhealth disparities for children
astman Dental Center, partner-ing with Strong’s Social Work
Division, received a 5-year, $250,000grant from Healthy TomorrowsPartnership for Children. The fundingcame from the Maternal and ChildHealth Bureau, which is part of theHealth Resources and ServicesAdministration (HRSA) and theAmerican Academy of Pediatrics. The “Dental Home for ChildrenProject” will target children with significant unmet dental needs,
who tend to use
Eastman’s Pediatric
Dentistry Clinic for emergency care. The project
will fund afull-time out-reach workerwho will offer
families a wide range of services to address barriers
to care and other related issues. Maggie Petrosky, who developed
the grant with Eastman faculty, is the project’s principal investigator. She has been a social worker withEastman Dental Center and theMedical Center for nearly ten years. The Dental Home for ChildrenProject has two goals: to improve the oral health of targeted childrenby changing their use of pediatricdental services at the Eastman Dental Center site. The second is to improve communication betweenthe dental and primary pediatric carehealth systems. This will enhanceboth the dental and primary medicalcare for impoverished and under-served children.
The project includes formal communication between Eastmanand the pediatric primary care com-munity to inform pediatricians abouttheir patients’ oral health. It willalso promote dental/medical partner-ships that will assist in the reductionof oral health disparities.
“Oral health is such an importantmarker for quality of life,” said Ms.Petrosky. “I continue to be impressedby the personal stories that unfold inthe dental setting when families aregiven a chance to talk.
Their stories are powerful, hum-bling, and unsettling, at times. I amvery excited about the opportunityto engage families in a meaningfulway, using oral health as the avenue.”
“This project dovetails perfectlywith our other outreach efforts and helps us continue the legacyestablished so many years ago by our benefactor, George Eastman,” said CyrilMeyerowitz, chair of theDepartment ofDentistry and director of Eastman Dental Center. “This is a
logical extensionof Ms. Petrosky’swork with theunderserved and one that compliments theservices wealready provide.”
“To achieve the project goals,”Petrosky said, “case management/outreach services designed to fosterand sustain positive experiences withthe dental care system, will be avail-able to respond to the urgent dentalcare needs of children. The outreachworker will function as an advocateand a formal link between families,Eastman, and pediatric primary care sites with the overall goal ofimproved health.”
This willenhance both
the dentaland primary
medicalcare for
impoverishedand under-
served children.

the International College of Dentists, the oldestinternational honorary dental institution.
Castillo, who specializes in pediatricdentistry, practices in Lima, Peru. He isthe first South American dentist to beelected president of the InternationalCollege of Dentists, founded in 1927and with members from 89 countries.Membership is by invitation only.
Castillo is one of the founding pro-fessors of the Universidad PeruanaCayetano Heredia College of Dentistryand its past dean. His wife, Mirza, is adentist, his three children are dentists, and two of them also married dentists.
Castillo is a member of numerous professional groups, including the American Dental Association, the International Association for Dental Research, and the American Society of Dentistry for Children.
r. William Bowenwas recently
awarded a R21 grantthrough NIH/NIDCR.The project period is7/1/04-5/31/06. Dr.Robert Berkowitz is a co-investigator on this project entitled,“Glucosyltransferase as a Marker for Caries Activity.”
The purpose of thispilot study is to explore whether arelationship exists between ureaseand arginine deiminase activities inthe sediment of whole saliva of children with theircaries experience.Specifically, saliva willbe collected from eithercaries-free or caries-active children and thesediment of the salivawill be tested for ureaseand arginine deiminaseactivities by directenzyme assays.
The cross-sectionalstudy will attempt toshow a relationship of a lack of alkaliproduction in the oral cavity, withcaries activity as defined by the pres-ence of lesions in a very young popu-lation. If successful, thenext step would be topropose to do a larger, separate study to deter-mine if a lack of baseproduction by the sedi-ment of patient salivacan be used to predictfuture caries activity.
Dr. Wei Hsu, anassistant professor ofBiomedical Genetics inthe Center for Oral Biology (COB),has been awarded an RO1 grantthrough the Cancer Institute of theNational Institutes of Health. Thefive-year, $1.6 milliongrant will fund a studyof the “Genetic Regula-tory Network inMammary Tumorigen-esis” and will focus onways to prevent andtreat breast cancer.
The primary objec-tive is to investigate cellular signals and signal transductionmechanisms in breastdevelopment and tumorigenesis.Numerous studies have repeatedlyconfirmed that reproductive historyrepresents the strongest risk/protec-tive factor for breast cancer. Theprotective effect of early pregnancyprovides an operative model toachieve breast cancer prevention andtherapy in humans. Very little isknown about fundamental changes of
the breast during preg-nancy and lactation.
Dr. Hsu is particu-larly interested in theparity-induced mam-mary progenitors thatcontribute to differ-ences in cellular com-position between thenulliparous and parousglands. This newlyidentified progenitorpopulation, displaying
stem cell characteristics, may provideinsight toward the protectivefactor(s) associated with parity.
Dr. Hsu’s research focuses oncraniofacial develop-ment; mammary glanddevelopment thatfocuses on the investi-gation of the Wnt sig-naling inducers andantagonists in breastcancer developmentand anti-cancer mecha-nisms; stem cell biologythat includes the studyof cellular signalingpathways; and the use
of mouse models for human diseases.
Dr. Rulang Jiang has beenawarded a subcontract on a P50
Grant from the NIH/NIDCR. The title ofthe subcontract is“Oral cleft pathogene-sis in a mutant mouse.”The long-term goal ofthis proposed researchis to understand themolecular pathogenicmechanisms of orofa-cial clefting.

Eastman alumni are reaching out to
the underprivileged
For the past two years, a group of
Eastman Dental Center alumni including
Drs. J. Antonio Bello, Ramon Braojos,
Adan Casasa, Andreas Felix, Eduardo
Izaguirre, Federico Perez Diez, Nestor
Schejtman, Rolando Velasco, Tomas
Vilchis, and Roberto Sanchez
Woodworth, have been gathering every six
months to greet each other and raise
money for different noble causes. The
group includes alumni from several
Dentistry programs and they are actively
carrying on the Eastman tradition of giving
to those less fortunate.
The members take turns hosting an
event, usually a dinner or lunch gathering.
Each individual brings a cash donation,
which supports a cause that benefits the
underprivileged. The events are always
filled with laughter and stories but the
underlying factor is the support that goes
to orphanages, homeless shelters, and
those in need.
Congratulations to the members of the
group and thank you for carrying on the
Eastman tradition.

The early dental dispensaryWas George Eastman ahead of his time? The Rochester Dental Dispensary created a new profession for young women by encouraging and promoting thetraining of dental hygienists in 1917.
Dentists also removed tonsils and adenoids at the dispensaryTonsillectomies, once a central activity of the Rochester Dental Dispensary, stopped in the 1920’s. Why? The invention of penicillin left many dispensaryrooms vacant.

a special treat. The area has
a new look with new carpet-

are in the process of being

two special remembrances
from Dr. Bibby’s days as a
teacher, researcher, and
administrator at Eastman.
Thanks to the generosity
of Dr. David Richardson,
Pedo ’78, MS in Dental
Science ‘80, we can also see
Dr. Bibby as a wise mentor.
Dr. Richardson wrote to us
about a squash racquet that
Dr. Bibby gave him as a
young resident saying he was
“always more concerned
about the individual rather
than the research.”
The text under the framed
picture of the former Eastman
director reiterates the
thought. It quotes Dr. Bibby
as saying, “I have always
been more concerned about
developing the individual
rather then developing the
research project.”
Dr. Richardson had the
racquet and photo framed
and graciously provided the
library with this memorabilia.
It will be placed in a promi-

What is a charitable gift annuity?A charitable gift annuity is a sim-
ple contract between the donor and
the University of Rochester, on behalf
of Dentistry.
In exchange for an irrevocable gift
of cash or marketable securities val-
ued at $5,000 or more, the University
agrees to pay one or two annuitants a
fixed sum each year for life. In many
cases, part of each payment is tax-free
for a period of years, increasing each
payment’s after-tax value.
The donor qualifies for a federal
income tax deduction in an amount
equal to the projected charitable
remainder value. The designated
annuitant(s) will receive fixed and
guaranteed payments in quarterly
installments each year for life.
What asset is the most commonlyused to fund a gift annuity?
While cash gifts are the most
common form, appreciated stock that
pays a small dividend or none at all is
a highly advantageous gifting option.
Spendable income typically increases,
and the donor owes no capital gains
tax at the time of the gift. Instead, a
portion of the annual payments from
the gift annuity will be taxed as capi-
tal gain for a period of years. If the
donor were, instead, to sell and rein-
vest this property, tax would be owed
for the year of sale on the entire
capital gain.
How long will the current rates beavailable?
The American Council on Gift
Annuities establishes annuity rates.
Rates are set based on a number of
factors, including general economic
conditions. The rates last changed on
July 1, 2003. A sampling of current
annuity rates for various ages appears
below:
Are there special advantages foryounger donors?
To gain advantages available to
individuals above the age of 60,
younger donors can fund an annuity
but defer payments, often until retire-
ment years. The donor gains all the
financial benefits outlined above, but
by deferring payments, the annuity
rate and income tax deduction can be
substantially higher when compared
to immediate payment gift annuities.
A sampling of deferred annuity rates
appears below:
How do charitable annuities benefitDentistry at the University ofRochester?
Upon the passing of the surviving
annuitant, the gift becomes available
to Dentistry and is used as directed
by the donor. Charitable annuities
help to ensure continued excellence in
dental education and care.
