Many people ask their partners for a more intimate relationship without really being sure what they want. If you are unclear about what

you would like to see change, it is hard to bring about a satisfying result. Emotional intimacy is different from sexual intimacy. If sexual intimacy involves physical closeness and the sharing of sexual pleasure, then emotional intimacy might be defined as the closeness that develops from the sharing of authentic feelingMany people find it difficult to verbalize how they

are affected by their experiences, and many others have difficulty listening and responding constructively. Emotional intimacy is the two part process which involves identifying and expressing your feelings, and having those feelings understood and accepted. Doing so allows you to know each other on a deeper level, beyond reactions or actions. Accepting that you and your partner can have different, yet equally valid, emotional responses to a given experience is the cornerstone of listening with empathy.Sometimes when people ask for emotional intimacy,

they are really trying to get their partner to express feelings about them or their relationship. They may be in need of some attention or assurance. Expressing love and commitment through action without the accompanying words can leave your partner wanting for more definition. Remember to verbalize the thought behind the action “You mean so much to me,” “your happiness is important to me,” “I value you,” or simply, “I love you”. Emotional intimacy can be the pillow talk couples have before sleep or around lovemaking. Sometimes it is the type of supportive, loving discussion that occurs at life’s milestones, but would actually be beneficial to have more frequently. Emotional intimacy may include sharing early memories

and your feelings about them. This allows your partner to understand your emotional history and the influences that defined the person you are today. Revealing your

daydreams or creating fantasies together is another way of adding lightness toward emotional intimacy. (Be careful to avoid sharing sexual fantasies unless you are convinced that they will not be interpreted as hurtful.) Another facet of emotional intimacy involves being able to talk about your inner fears or emotional triggers, and allowing yourself to be vulnerable. Taking this risk can be infinitely healing and bonding when your partner’s response is compassionate and nonjudgmental. Sometimes emotional intimacy can be a non-verbal

communication, the unspoken conveyance of heartfelt emotion. It can be expressed in the depth in which you look into each other’s eyes. It can be the exchanged smile that is read as a bond of love. It can be a wink that defines you as lovers. It is the tender touch to show that neither of you need to face the world alone. Emotional intimacy creates a connection between partners; it is like a secret language that neither of you share with anyone else. There is an an interesting dynamic about emotional

intimacy for couples; if there is a loving relationship it easier to create emotional intimacy, and if there is emotional intimacy it is easier to create a loving relationship. Being emotionally available requires that we take down the walls that protect our egos from the possibility of rejection or abandonment, that we conquer the risk of feeling criticized or judged, and that we open our hearts and our souls to let another person engage and embrace us on a metaphysical level.

If you have children who are finishing college or embarking on their first full-time job, you obviously want them to get off to a good start in their adult and

working lives. And by virtue of your years of experience, you probably have some good advice to offer – especially when it comes to making smart financial moves.Of course, you can find a broad array of financial topics

to discuss. But if you want to concentrate on just a few, you might consider these for starters: • Investing for the future – When young people are

paying off student loans, they may not think they can also afford to invest for the future. Indeed, this can be challenging – but it’s not impossible. So, if your children go to work for an employer that offers a retirement plan, such as a 401(k), you may want to point out that they can have money automatically invested – and since they never really “had” this money in the first place, they are less likely to miss it. They can start by deferring small amounts; when their earnings rise, they can increase their contributions. • Buying a home and paying off a mortgage – With

interest rates still low, now is not a bad time for prospective first-time homebuyers. Of course, if your children truly are starting out in the working world, it will likely take them a few years to save up enough for a down payment. But even after they reach that goal, you may want to warn them not to become “house poor” by spending a large portion of their total income on home ownership. If they do buy a house, though, and their incomes go up as their careers progress, they may wonder if they should pay down their mortgage quicker. While they might feel good about lowering that debt, you may want to point out that an argument could be made for putting money in assets that will likely be more liquid, such as stocks and bonds. For one thing, if your children were to lose their jobs, and they needed cash to tide them over until they were once again employed, they’d likely find it much harder to get money out of their homes than their investment accounts. Also, in terms of accumulating resources for retirement, they might better off

building up their investment portfolios, rather than sinking every extra dollar into their homes. • Using credit wisely – Urge your children to avoid

taking on excessive credit card debt and taking out non-essential loans. As you know, having a good credit score can pay off in several ways, including getting better rates on mortgages. You may want to risk sounding “old fashioned” by encouraging your children to live within their means. And consider pointing out that it’s often the people who are the most frugal today who may end up with the most money tomorrow. It’s not always easy for young people to get off on the

right foot, financially speaking. But as someone who knows a thing or two about controlling debt, saving and investing, you can help your children out by imparting a few words of wisdom.

Everyone loves a picnic - eating outside on a blanket in the grass; watching the kids kick a soccer ball; staring at the river, or people

watching. It all sounds idyllic! Believe me, I've had my experience with trying to make the perfect picnic. In the summer, my husband will often have the grand idea of going down to the river for a last minute dinner. Whatever I happen to be cooking for dinner quickly gets put into containers and gets brought down to the park in cardboard boxes. I'm scrambling to remember everything. I've carried a hot pot of chili in a cardboard box down to the river. I've also planned an extravagant picnic with real plates and silverware and real glasses. I've marinated meat to perfection for us to cook when we get to the river. I've spent hours making the perfect brick-pressed sandwiches with strawberry hand pies for dessert. While all of these are great ideas, we will opt for the simple picnic for Father's Day this year. What I've learned over the years is that what makes the picnic special is simply being together. Don't stress about the food - easy, simple foods make for the best dinner.

Here is my recipe for the perfect picnic:

homemade, fresh-squeezed lemonadehomemade guacamole with tortilla chipsa loaf of crusty bread or crackersa brick of cheddarcut up watermelon.

The best part of this picnic is that it can be pulled together in no time. Cut up the cheese and watermelon ahead of time and put them into a container. Make the guacamole and lemonade ahead of time.

What to bring:an old quilt or blanketpaper platespaper cupsnapkinsgarbage bagwet wipes or a few wet paper towels in a zip lock bag

Fresh-Squeezed Lemonade6 lemons squeezed (1 cup of juice) (easiest if they are at room temperature)1 cup sugar6 cups watericePut the lemon juice, sugar and water into a container and mix vigorously until the sugar is dissolved. Add ice and

stick it into the fridge until you are ready to go. I always use an old orange juice container so that it can be thrown out afterwards - less clean up means more time to relax!

Homemade guacamoletwo ripe avocados (a ripe avocado is dark green [almost black] and yields when you press it slightly) 1/2 lime three sprigs fresh cilantro1/2 small red onion chopped fine1/2 teaspoon salt1/4 teaspoon pepper

Cut the avocados in half, remove the pit and scoop out the fruit onto a plate. With a fork, mash it until it is smooth. Squeeze the lime juice and mix it well. Add the chopped cilantro, onion, salt and pepper. When you put the guacamole into a container, press plastic wrap right on top of the guacamole. This will help keep it from turning brown too quickly.

Perfect meal - perfect plan!

As a Nutrition and Health Coach, I am often asked if buying organic produce is “healthier” than conventionally grown produce. There is no

debate that consuming fruits and vegetables, organic or conventionally grown, is paramount to good health. However, your food choices have a lasting effect on you and shape your eating habits. For many consumers, "organic" means healthy and

expensive. Organic foods are produced without the use of most synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, added growth hormones, ionizing radiation, or genetic modification. They have stricter guidelines concerning the amount of natural contaminants allowed for safe consumption. Each year, The Environmental Working Group (EWG.

org), a non-profit organization, puts together a shopper’s guide to pesticides in produce. It’s called The DIRTY 12 and CLEAN 15 list. The DIRTY 12 ranks fruit and vegetables highest in pesticide residues. What tops the list this year is strawberries. The Clean 15 is a list that has the lowest level of pesticides. The guide helps you to make informed choices to lower your dietary pesticide

load. To learn more on their findings, visit https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/strawberries.phpBecoming an informed

consumer empowers you to make good choices about the food you buy. A good place to start is by shopping at your local farmers markets. Talk to the farmers that grow the food to learn about their farming practices. The food your buy there is seasonal and picked at the peak of freshness. Now that’s a recipe for good health.

EASY STRAWBERRY JAM

I for one can’t resist fresh ripe strawberries. Strawberry jam.is in order. simple and luscious3 pints’ fresh strawberries3 cups granulated sugar2 T orange-flavored liqueur1/2 tart apple, peeled cored and cut into a small dice1/2 cup fresh blueberriesRinse strawberries under cold water. Drain and hull.

Leave small berries whole, cut larger ones in quarters or halves. Place in a heavy Dutch oven and toss with the sugar and liqueur.Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring often. Add

apple and blueberries and continue to keep at a rolling boil until temperature reaches 220 degrees. This will take 25 to 35 minutes. Be sure to stir from time to time and skim and discard any foam that rises to top. Let cool and then store in glass containers. Refrigerate. Should keep for at least 2 weeks, but you and your friends will consume it before then.

QUICK APRICOT PRESERVES

Have you seen the beautiful velvety apricots! Make a batch of apricot preserves. No, we're not going to fool around with canning equipment. It's not going to last long enough to require that. And there's no need to peel the apricots. Here's all you do:1 1/2 cups granulated sugar1/4 cup waterpinch of salt1/4 cup dried apricots chopped in a medium dice2 lbs. fresh apricots2 T fresh lemon juice2 T CalvadosPlace 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar, 1/4 cup water and a

pinch of salt in a Dutch oven and stir over heat until clear. Add dried apricots. They will add a tartness that will complement the fresh fruit. Break open 2 lbs. apricots with your fingers and pop out the pits. Chop coarsely and add to sugar syrup. Cook at a rolling boil, stirring often until syrupy and thickened. This will take about a half hour. Take off heat and stir in 2 T fresh lemon juice and 2 T Calvados. When cool, ladle into 2 pint-size glass jars with screw-on tops. Refrigerate. Will keep for 2-3 weeks.

This includes being able to have any services (or other support) they might need over time as their needs change. The focus of aging in place is to help seniors ensure they can live where they choose and get any help they need for as long as they can. It is more than that, though. The goal of an elderly person wanting to age in place should be to maintain and/or improve their quality of life. In order to do that, a good plan that focuses on your quality of life and covers yourself, home, finances, care and other items should be created as early as possible. This plan should be maintained over time as your situation changes. What changes as we age? Reduced vision and or hearing, decreased muscle strength or endurance, decreased mobility, increased risk of falls and reduced mental processing capabilities. These changes happen to most everyone in one form or another. Knowing that this is the case and choosing to have a plan to age in place means you will have a greater change to control your quality of life and independence.Planning also presents you with an opportunity to lessen the burden on your family by outlining how and where your needs are met. As well as, lessening the need for emergency assistance from community resources.

Most important, making these choices gives you control over your independence, quality of life and dignity. Aging in place does not mean you have to do everything yourself; that’s where the plan comes in. It means you get to plan how your needs are met, who meets them and when.Bottom line – know your options and be in control!
