Spring and early fall are great times to paint a house. By spring everyone is

so stir crazy that cleaning and painting feel almost like fun. Come fall, while the weather is still good everyone who goes to the beach has had enough of it by then and is ready to do some work around the house. Something to consid-er if you paint yourself is lead. It is in the paint of at least every house built before 1978. There are pages of new regula-tions that have come out since 2010. More important than the regs though is the lead itself. The stuff isn’t radioac-tive. If it’s on your house and you live in your house it isn’t a problem-so long as it stays “on” your house. It is like a nest of hornets. It’ll will leave you alone if you leave it alone. The problem starts because painters can’t leave it alone. They scrape the paint and sand the paint and grind and burn the paint-they get it all over themselves then go home and play with the kids. If you are painting an older home it is worth going to www.epa.com so you can scare yourself to death. The instructor who taught a lead safety course that all us contractors had to take said that using approved lead safety practices would only increase the cost of the job by about $100. He said that with a straight face. He should have been a congressman. It is expensive and tedious. Whatever you do, be careful with the stuff-especially if you have kids or live near them. One approach would be to bag the project until next year and go to the beach. Maybe by then “they” will find an easier solution.Have fun painting!Check out my website at www.joeadami.com

WINE FINDSGAVI 2011, La Luciana, Araldica (IT)Gavi comes from the famous Wine region ofPiemonte located in the north-western part ofItaly. The color is pale straw and you will find limeand apple aromas on the bouquet. A good balancebetween acidity and fruit, enhanced by stainlesssteel ageing, result in a Gavi that is dry and crisp with lovely citrus flavors that follow through to the end.

Rosé 2012, Moulin de Chauvigne (FR)Spring is finally here and it’s time to add Rosés toyour wine choices. This Rosé has a beautiful blush color with a gentle bouquet of strawberries androses. It is a dry wine with flavors of fruit andexotic tea and has a really nice, clean finish. Will go well with food and fruit or just to enjoywith friends.

What a luscious treat for your family and friends and so easy to make. The apple and blueberries add

complexity and the liqueur a bit of pizzazz.

3 pints fresh strawberries3 cups superfine sugar2 T orange-flavored liqueur1/2 Granny Smith apple, peeled cored and cut into a

small dice1/2 cup fresh blueberries

Rinse strawberries under cold water. Drain and hull. Leave small berries whole; cut larger ones in quarters or halves. Place in a heavy Dutch oven and toss with the sugar and liqueur.Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring often. Add apple and blueberries and continue to keep at a

rolling boil until temperature reaches 220 degrees. This will take 25 to 35 minutes. Be sure to stir from time to time and skim and discard any foam that rises to top. Let cool and then store in glass containers. Refrigerate. Should keep for at least 2 weeks, but you and your friends will consume them before then.

Snacking is usually associated with sugary & salty snacks. They are likely to be high in calories, come in colorful boxes, made with refined sugars, high in sodium and artificial dyes. However, snacking

doesn’t have to be unhealthy at all. A snack should be filled with nutrients to fuel your body with energy, easy to make, easy to take on the run & taste satisfying. My recommendation for smart snacking; eat three meals and two snacks, or five small meals a day. For many people, if they don’t eat regularly, their blood sugar drops, they feel hungry and are more likely to crave sweet sugary snacks. Smart snacking can fuel your body, curb your appetite, prevent overeating and lower your overall calorie intake for the day. Not all snacks are created equal. Minimize snacking on simple carbs such as soda, candy, sports drinks & pretzels. They are empty calories that spike your blood sugar, leave you craving for more and have a negative effect on your mood. Instead, choose complex carbs, healthy proteins & healthy fats. Complex carbs enter your bloodstream slowly, will not spike your blood sugar and will keep you satiated. Whole grains (oats, quinoa, brown rice), veggies, guacamole, nuts, seeds & beans (dips) are smart snack choices. Here are some of my favorite smart snacks. They are bursting with flavor, nutrient dense and can reduce cravings.

• Home made granola bars (email me for recipe)• Home made trail mix• Guacamole• Apple or celery w/ nut butter, chia seeds & unsweetened coconut• Unsweetened yogurt with fresh fruit/nuts/cinnamon• Sweet potato fries• Hummus & carrots

Dear Friend, We believe that life is better with great teeth and a healthy mouth. Too many people are needlessly walking around with either an unhealthy mouth or with a smile that they just don't like. They are embarrassed or they are in pain, living a life of quiet desperation. They don't like to smile, don't like to be social—they really aren't living. They have experienced the unpredictable toothache or broken tooth, the nagging discomfort of a cavity, or their desire to hide their own smile. This usually happens because of fear, and it doesn't have to be that way. Our vision is to give these people their lives back. The way we do it is by providing a safe, pain free experience that alleviates their stress and allows them to get the smile and healthy teeth they've always wanted so they can be who they were meant to be. That's what we do. Dentistry for Adults. We are different. I am Dr. Bard J. Levey. If this sounds like your story, give us a call and ask for a complimentary consultation, or email us at [email protected].

When I heard the spiritual teacher Penache Desai say that “The loving acceptance of one’s self sets an

entire planet free”, it got me thinking. Self care, or the lack of, has been a very important theme in my life as well as in my practice. I have been teaching and counseling individuals and groups of women for as long as I can remember about the importance of self care from a very personal level.

People, particularly women in this culture, have learned to put everyone and everything ahead of themselves. And in addition to this we spend our lives attempting to please others and look for approval outside of ourselves. When in actuality the only person that matters is us. Many feel that if they put themselves first that they will be considered the dreaded “selfish”. No-one wants to be that! And then of course the guilt sets in. Life would be so much easier if we all were able to be honest with ourselves and with others and make the best choices for ourselves. The internal dramas would certainly decrease if we all followed this rule. Anxiety would decrease, decision making would become a breeze and there would be many more happy people. However, when I think about it, self care is only one very small aspect of “self-acceptance”. When one accepts all that they are, and are not, it allows one to offer the same acceptance in others. When we can show up truly open and comfortable with who we are, we allow others to show up as their authentic selves as well.

Just imagine a life where you feel the freedom to be exactly who you are, caring for yourself in a totally loving way in all instances. Image the dramas and negative beliefs that live in our heads disappearing. Imagine the joy this would bring us. Imagine the joy this would bring the planet.

To truly accept every aspect of yourself would open up so much love and compassion available for everyone you meet.

It is definitely difficult to be a child these days. Just when everybody thinks that kids have it easier and more

convenient, there are still a lot for them to cope up with. They don't need to go to the library to do research, but the information they get in computers can be unreliable. They can get a thousand channels on their television sets, but who is going to explain everything to them when both parents are working? They have video games at their disposal, but their health is compromised due to lack of physical activity. If those things are not enough, every day seems to be crammed with shocking and traumatic events that just come out of nowhere. It seems that these days, a new day brings a rather unbelievable happening that even adults would have difficulty wrapping their heads around. Every-one, from young to old, has not yet fully recovered from the tragedy of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shoot-ing, where kids were killed by a rather confused gunman. Now, everybody has to deal with events happening one day after another - explosions happening in the Boston Marathon, and another explosion at a fertilizer factory in Texas, and now a tornado in Oklahoma! All of it looks surreal, with things happening so fast, lives perished, and scenes looking like they were taken from blockbuster di-saster movies! Only the unbelievable thing is, everything is real.Another factor about these events is that children were in-volved. From the tragedy in Connecticut to the explosions in Boston and Texas to the tornado, children of kindergar-ten age were not spared. In the case of the Sandy Hook shooting, kids as young as 7 were the main victims, out-numbering the number of adult victims. In Boston, there were children who joined the marathon, dedicating their earnest efforts in memory of the Sandy Hook victims. In Texas, whole families perished and were rendered home-less. With TV and the internet offering only temporary relief from these tragedies, kids cannot go anywhere but their families for explanations and comfort during these trying times. The question now is, how can parents talk to their children about these events, especially brutal, and unexpected ones, to placate them and make them feel safe in this rather dangerous world they are living in?It is of utmost importance that parents know their children inside and out, especially in times like this. There can be no cookie cutter or one-size-fits-all manner of talking with

kids regarding tragic events. One solution or manner of talking to one kid may not work for another kid, simply because their personalities are different. Of course, the standards of being gentle and talking with compassion and integrity are essential for all children, but the rest of the talking has to be customized to each child's personal-ity.It is essential for parents to make the first move by initiat-ing the talk. It has to be done in a place where there are no distractions and things that may disrupt the conver-sation, as anything that may cut the conversation could make the child feel his or her thoughts are not appreci-ated or given importance. The discussion could start with the parent asking the child what he or she has heard about what happened.Lastly, two things: the child must be given a forum to discuss his or her points without being dismissed and the parent should be able to provide appropriate answers to whatever questions the child may bring up. There is always a correct way of explaining such events to the child and provide correct answers in case the child brings up an incorrect point. The child will definitely be more confused if the parent will outright correct him or her, or say that what he or she said is wrong. Instead, the facts and implications of the event should be brought forward, and the child would surely pick up on points that were inconsistent with his or her narrative. As long as the facts given to him or her are correct and pre-sented in a calm and accepting manner, the child would definitely understand. There is definitely no room for judgment and stern correction: Parents should realize that they are talking to impressionable kids, after all. The parent's role is of utmost importance when a child needs guidance in traumatic events. Thus, it is essential for them to step in and take advantage of the opportu-nity to not only explain these events to their children, but make them feel safe and loved in this unpredictable and chaotic world.

Your other point about using a teacher to help with the admissions process is important to address. Many teachers have years of experience guiding students and writing recommendation letters and can act as a valuable source of college information. Ask the guidance counseling staff if they know of recent graduates that attend the colleges your child is most interested in applying to. They can also serve as a valuable resource providing current information to your children. Keep in mind that many local high schools utilize web based college search and application tools e.g. Naviance, that can also help you navigate through this process. Also, don't hesitate to have your child contact the colleges most interested in. We love to talk with prospective students about our institutions. An important question to ask yourself is why am I seeking a private consultant? Again, if you find yourself in a special situation and believe another opinion could be helpful, then certainly investigate using outside assistance. Two sources to help you find an independent counselor are http://www.iecaonline.com/ and http://www.hecaonline.org/. As far as your question regarding private consultants and if they help applicants gain an admissions edge, my simple answer would be no. The student's application and their supporting documentation (grades, test scores, essays/writing samples, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, etc.) is considered when an admissions office evaluates a student. Good luck with this process if it's your first time and feel free to stay in touch if you have other questions.

Dear Mr. Lipton,I would like your opinion on the use of private college consultants. Do they really help a student get into a selective college? Your grades and test scores don't change so what benefit do they add? I would think a student who is actively engaged with their school counselor and English teacher could do just as well. Looking forward to hearing from you.K. (parent)

Dear K,Thank you for your questions. I frequently get asked if a private consultant (also known as an independent counselor or independent educational consultant) can provide families with added value to the college search and application process. My response would vary depending on the student's situation and the experience level of the consultant. For example, if a student was one of six hundred graduating seniors and the high school counseling staff was severely understaffed then using outside consulting services could provide a benefit to the family. In addition, if the student had very special needs, a disability or was homeschooled and wanted another viewpoint or recommended list of colleges to consider, then using an outside consultant could be beneficial. Also, international students (non-US Citizens and non-Permanent Residents) that apply to colleges especially when living outside of the US can benefit from a consultant if they attend a school that doesn't have a traditional school counselor. The irony is most of the students in our country that attend high schools with several hundred students in their class, while having a very limited number of guidance counselors to assist them, are often the most in need of additional outside help and the least able to afford private consulting. In the more affluent areas within our region, the vast majority of high schools have very good guidance counseling services and are highly trained to assist students and families with the college search and application process. Many of the local school counselors are involved with professional associations, are frequently reeducating themselves on the admissions process and have useful contacts at colleges around the country.

Numbers tell us things, all too often, we do not

want to hear. For parents, at this time of year, the number of our children becoming young adults is bittersweet. We begin to celebrate the seasons of proms and graduations and the excitement of hopeful youth. We can all work to make those hopes come

true when we work with our children to recognize the road to maturity and success is not always paved with gold and worse has some major potholes. These can be avoided. The stories available on the web describe a host of pre-prom simulated accidents and their tragic events as tools to convince young people about the necessary cau-tion they must exercise. One of my favorites is Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD). They have comprehensive guidelines to include the entire community: schools, par-ents, and students. Several years ago, I was asked to make a ten minute presentation about drugs, alcohol and driving to a high school assembly of likely prom goers; recently I was asked by my own employer,a school district, to speak to newly licensed drivers who were in the application process of securing reserved parking spaces at the high school. The training session was a mandated prerequisite.I felt disadvantaged. The only reason the students would come, and they had to bring a parent, was to secure that treasured parking space. If I was going to make an impression, I better develop something more than an ice-breaker. I’d like to share this vehicle I developed.

Each year, the automobile is the number one cause of death of our teenagers. We know this from reading the statistics and the sad news articles. Youthful death is always tragic and always irreconcilable. How can so much hope have so few years? Each week, more stories written about these tragedies. Who are the first writers of these stories? Well, in a very dramatic way, each of writes a story about our lives. Just think about Facebook. The question for us to ask our teens is, what story are they writing? In the puzzle of life, there is a three letter word for a living story. Of course, that a bio. And there is a four letter word for one’s last story; the obit. In no other environment are teenagers more independent of their parents’ care or more the object of their worry, than when they are behind the wheel of the automobile. It’s behind that wheel, that teenagers become the authors of their lives; will they write a bio of hopes and dreams, or will we read the obit of a life short in years and long in sorrow. Moms and dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles ask your teens what’s their story? As parents, we wrote the intro-duction, we provided the index of the future events, only they can write the chapters. Write the story you want us to read. Teens remember their prom for the rest of their lives; we need to remind them how long we expect that to be.

I’m 41 years old when I begin to notice

changes in my mom’s behavior and memory. Mom loves the theatre and brought me to my first Broadway show at the age of sixteen. It was an obscure play, “Hadrian the Seventh,” and I immediately fall in love with the theatre.

I decide when I enter college to make theatre one of my majors.Throughout my childhood, Mom regaled me with theatre stories and she jumped at any chance to see a play on, off and even off-off Broadway. So when I begin to see subtle changes in her memory and when she starts to cancel our theatre plans, I know something is wrong. My concern leads me to make appointments with two neurologists. Unfortunately, after thorough examinations, they both conclude it is to soon too give a clear-cut diagnosis. They speculate about a few and one of them is Alzheimer’s. I’m told it’s a wait-and-see process and with time, if it is Alzheimer’s, it will begin to present itself in more evident ways. As you can imagine, the idea of my mom possibly having Alzheimer’s disease was extremely scary and overwhelming. A year later when Mom becomes ill with a respiratory infection and ingests three antibiotics in three hours, I know we have reached critical mass. The next day I find a memory disorders clinic at a prestigious hospital on Long Island. At her appointment, a young neurology resident asks her a battery of medical questions, conducts a mini mental status test and then draws blood. He leaves the room and when he returns he delivers his diagnosis in a very matter of fact way, as if telling a patient, it’s just a cold:“Mrs. Bourbeau you have Alzheimer’s disease.”Before a question can be asked, he is gone. I watch as my mom’s eyes fill with fear trying hard to hold it together as if all her strength will make it not true. I’m confused, in shock and at the same time very angry with this cowardly untrained physician. I channel all my disbelief into my anger as it easier to hold that than the possible reality of the situation. How could he deliver a fatal diagnosis and just walk out of the room? I am appalled by his behavior. Looking back so many years later, I wonder if this young resident was given any training on discussing a diagnosis of this magnitude with a patient and the family. I now need to find a skilled physician for a second opinion. Hoping against all odds that this young doctor has made a mistake is all I have to hold on to. Through the help of the NYC Alzheimer’s Association, I receive the name of a seasoned geriatric psychiatrist. When I make the call I am determined to let this doctor know how I want my mom treated if the diagnosis is correct. When we connect I explain my concerns: “After you conduct

your tests, if you determine that my mom has Alzheimer’s I am requesting that you do not tell her.” She replies, “Well, I need to inform the patient of the diagnosis.” I politely but firmly inform this doctor, “I will tell my mom when it is the right time and she is ready to hear it. She is my mother and I know her better than anyone else. I do not want her to ever be scared again.” I have made my case and this physician reluctantly agrees, so I schedule an appointment. This doctor is extremely thorough, professional and kind. She looks at all the reports and spends an inordinate amount of time with us, three hours. By the end of the visit, she takes me aside and confirms my greatest fear: my Mom does have Alzheimer’s. Now that I know the truth, I need to digest this news before I can explain it to her.A few months later on a cold dreary February afternoon, Mom and I are in her bedroom when she suddenly turns to me and says, “Lynn, I feel like I am going crazy. I need you to tell me what is wrong with me.” So the moment has finally presented itself and I now need to be there for her and remain centered. “Mom, do you really want me to tell you what is wrong? Are you sure?“Yes, I need to know.”I take her hand in mine and gently say to her, “Mom, the doctor says you have Alzheimer’s.”She begins to softly cry. I hold her hand a little tighter and then ask her,“Mom, are you crying because you have Alzheimer’s?”And then the most incredible words come out of her mouth: “No, I’m crying because you will have to watch me go through this.”I look directly into her eyes, hold her hand even tighter, put my arm around her shoulder and say, “Mom, you will never walk this journey alone. We will walk it together, I promise you.” So the journey begins.
