MOLUSCUM MOLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUMCONTAGIOSUM
Sexually transmitted disease is
a benign papular condition of
the skin & caused by the
molluscum contagiosum virus
(MCV).
Definition
First discribed in 1817.
Spread both sexual & non
sexual routes of transmission.
Peak ages of occurrence 20 to
29 years.
Epidemiology
Most patients cause few
problem & are self limited.
Transmission is a result
of skin inoculation
microscopic abrasions.
Pathogenesis
Spread to disseminated skin
by external autoinoculation.
The disease is sexually
transmitted disease supported
by indirect evidence, lision
location, a frequent history of
contact with multiple sexual
partners & prostitutes.
The incubation period
averages 2 – 3 months
(range 1 week – 6 months).
Most patients asymptomatic.
Clinical Manifestation
A minority complain of
itching or tenderness.
Lesions begin as tiny
papules diameter 3 - 5 mm
in several weeks.
The flesh colored papules are
smooth, firm, & dome shaped.
In adults lesions occur on the
thighs, inguinal region,
buttocks & lower abdominal
wall.
Children more typically
lesions on the face, trunk,
& upper extremities.
The pathology MCV
infection very characteristic.
Pathology
Lesions consist of focal areas
of hyperplastic epidermis
surrounding cyst shaped
lobules filled with
keratinized debris &
degenerating molluscum
contagiosum bodies.
Anamnesis.
Clinical manifestation.
Detection of MCV antigen
by fluorescent antibody, of
viral particles by electron
microscopy.
Pathologic.
Diagnosis
Syringomas.
Plane warts.
Lichen planus epithelial.
Intradermal nevi.
Differential Diagnosis
Sebaceous adenomas
Varicella zoster virus.
Histiocytomas.
Seborrheic & atopi dermatitis.
Basal cell epitheliomas.
Examination & treatment
of sexual partners have
been recommended.
Treatment
The simplest are
excisional curettage &
expression of the
lession.
Cauterization of the lesion or
chemical agent such as
phenol, silver nitrate,
trichloroacetic acid, or iodine,
0,5% podophyllotoxin.
