Daddy Daycare

Lincoln-born journalist Mark Charlton'slife changed dramatically when his twinswere born three years ago. Here hedescribes his experiences in his'daddydaycare diary'...

By the time you read this you will haveprobably got back from a holiday. In fact, youare probably on the brink of taking the vacuumto the back of the car to get the last of thesand out of the rear foot-well or simplythinking about your credit card statement andcrying your eyes out. Anyway, welcome home. I had my first break with my three-year-oldtwins this summer and I went into it hoping todiscover what the attraction of a familyholiday is.

I love the idea of a relaxing vacation. In fact, Iwistfully think back to those pre-parenthooddays of sun, sea and sangria as Barbara

Streisand sings "Misty water-colouredmemories..." while I reflect on somewonderful, relaxing times away with my wife.

But these days the sun, sea and sangria havebeen replaced with stress, sickness and sleepdeprivation. How is that a holiday? We took a week in an apartment in a UKholiday village and I have to admit if you takeout the tiredness, the nagging responsibility ofkeeping my children alive and the militaryoperation of packing to get there, we had agreat time.

I got into the spirit of being a dad on holidayand bought a pair of khaki shorts and somesandals (no socks by the way... what do youtake me for?). I packed some clean underwear

and a couple of t-shirts and that was me. Jobdone. Holiday clobber sorted in a small bag. Soit begs the question: Why was my car so full? The rear window filled with pillows, potties, foldable chairs, and an arbitrary shoe stuffedbehind a head rest etc. etc. Thankfully, itwasn’t just my car that looked like a charityshop display created by Mr Trebus, all the carsentering the resort looked just as bad. Somecars looked as bad and had a roof-rack. That'sa lot of stuff. But there's nothing wrong withthat. The one thing you leave at home will bethe one thing you need. "I told you to bringthat solar powered egg timer, but would youlisten? Oh no..."

On a family holiday you get so engrossed inactivities with your children - swimming, biking, swings and slides that you get chanceto forget about the stresses and strains ofeveryday life. Work goes on the back-burnerand in the madness of all the running around, organising and battering the contents of yourwallet, you get some quality time with yourchildren that you'll never find in the grind ofthe 9 to 5.

And that, after you've unpacked your bags, gotthe sand out of your car and finally paid offyour credit card bill, is you will look back atand appreciate what the attraction of a familyholiday is.

Every parent can identify with thatterrifying feeling - you’re out shoppingand you suddenly find your child isn’twhere you thought they were. Panic setsin and you frantically start lookingeverywhere.

To minimise the trauma, Lincoln BusinessImprovement Group is poised to launch ascheme which is designed to help children whobecome separated from their parents orguardians. The Child Safe Zones Programme isbeing launched by the beach in City Square onAugust 8, 2012, between 10am and noon andat St Marks Retail Park, between 1pm & 3pm.

There will be balloons, stickers, a children’sentertainer and face-painting taking placethroughout both sessions. Posters and stickerswill be on show around the town displaying alow-cost helpline number which will quicklyconnect them with a member of the Level 1security team, who can get word out to all thecity’s Radio Link users.

In the event that a child becomes separatedfrom their parent or guardian the securityteam will immediately activate its searchprocedure.

Shoppers can also pick up a free Child Safewristband onto which they write their ownmobile telephone number. This means thatany child found wearing one can quickly bereunited with their parent or guardian.

The wristband distribution units will be foundat the Central RailwayStation, Lincoln BusStation, St Marks Retail Park and the Waterside Shopping Centre.

Lincoln BIG Security Group Co-ordinatorYvette Hall, said: “We’re very pleased to beable to add the Child Safe Zones initiative toour portfolio of customer services. Thousandsof people visit Lincoln every week and we’reproud of our reputation as a safe and secure,family-friendly environment.

“It’s very important to us that our customerscontinue to enjoy the pleasant and relaxedatmosphere here. In reality very few childrendo become separated from their guardians, but if the worst should happen, this schememeans that we can quickly reunite them, minimising the upset for everyone.”

Families should look out for the Child SafeZones’ smiley orange balloon stickers acrossLincoln Business Improvement District area, which display the low-cost helpline number08444 48 42 33. Anyone losing sight of a childin their care, or any shopper finding a lostchild, can call the number on the sticker to speak directly to a member of the security team.

Healthy habits could earn rewards

Want to get active but don’t want tobecome a gym-bunny? Or, are you worriedabout getting your kids off the gamesconsole and up-and-about?

Sessions from the City of Lincoln Council’sHealth Lifestyles Team could be the answer. The team offer something for everyone; fromled group walks in and around Lincoln to a programme called activ8 for kids and parents alike.

Keeping motivated can also be an issue and the City Council has teamed up withLincolnshire Co-operative to make healthyhabits even more appealing.

New people going to a Healthy Lifestyles Teamsession will now receive a special stamp foreach attendance. Five stamps create a £10voucher which can be used in any LincolnshireCo-op foodstore.

The scheme is funded by £10,000 donated byLincolnshire Co-op pharmacies and foodstores.Healthy Lifestyles Team Leader at the City ofLincoln Council, Joanna Blackwell said: “It’sthe early stages of developing a healthy habitthat we all find challenging, whether it’sgiving up smoking, losing weight or gettingactive. The Healthy Habit vouchers will givethat extra incentive to keep on track.”

Lincolnshire Co-op’s Head of Pharmacy AlastairFarquhar added: “Although the main part ofour business is dispensing prescriptions, as a co-op we’d much rather help people avoid the need for medication.

The Healthy Habit voucher scheme is one of the ways in which we’re aiming to do just that.”

Starting School

The first few days have gone well. Yourfour-year old has seemingly taken toprimary school like a duck to water hasbeen happily skipping into the classroomwithout so much as a second glance asyou’re wiping a tear from your eye.

But a few days later, you’re at the school gatesand your little one is clinging to your trouserleg, begging you not to leave. It’s notuncommon, says primary school teacherJennifer Bayley. “Children do have wobbles,”she says. “They can come in excited for the firstfew days and then become clingy after that.”

Even if your child is used to being away fromyou, such as being at nursery, starting primaryschool is a big change in their daily life andeven confident kids can be affected. It mightbe because there are changes at home, such asan impending house move or they could bepicking up on mum’s nervousness. “I have seenparents who are so upset about their childstarting school that they pass this onunintentionally,” adds Mrs Bayley, a teacher at Little Gonerby Church of England Infant School.

“Parents need to be very positive and talkabout the transition of starting school, but trynot to show their own fears or emotions.”If faced with a child who doesn’t want tocome to school, Mrs Bayley says: “The bestmethod is to allow the parent to enter theclassroom and help settle the child but if thismakes the child more upset and clingy we tendto sit with them and ask the parent to leave. We tell the parent we will telephone themlater once the child has settled down.”Emma Ryland’s son William started school lastSeptember and was one of the youngest in theyear. Emma says: “He couldn't wipe his ownbottom, blow his nose, open a bag of crispsor open his lunch box,” she says. “These issuesgave me anxiety. “He was used to doing two,10-hour days at nursery but going to schoolfive days a week made him very tired and byThursday or Friday we had lots of tears andtantrums about petty things.

“For the first half of the term, he came homewith his lunch box still almost full. He said hedidn't have enough time to eat because hewanted to play. “William loves school now. When my younger son, Lewis, starts school Iwon’t be so worried about him – I will be moreworried about myself in an empty house.”

Tips• Get your child into an ‘early to bed on schoolnights’ routine.• Label their clothes and show them where the labelsare so they are less likely to lose things. • Show them how to fold clothes and keep themtogether – losing clothes after a PE lesson can beupsetting for a small child.• Be confident at the school gate – no crying untilyour child is out of sight!• Tell the teacher about any changes to home life.• Ensure you are on time to drop them off and pickthem up from school. • Give them time to unwind when they get home andlimit the number of term time evening activities.

The Gift of Learning

A Lincoln mum has set up an online shopto help parents of children with specialeducational needs (SEN). She told Molly’sGuide about her site and how it came about.

Most children moan about school from time totime, but for a minority, the mere thought canmake them sick with dread, because they havespecial educational needs (SEN) that aren’trecognised. SENs take many forms, but there isone common factor. The effect on the child –and the wider family – can be devastating.Lincoln mum Ann Beck knows first hand aboutthe devastation. Her son, who has behaviouraland learning difficulties including dyslexia, became a ‘school refuser’ as a result of hisfear of failure.

Following her own experiences with her sonshe’s now set up www.thegiftoflearning.co.uk,a website selling affordable learning resourcesfor parents of children with SEN.

Ann says: “The crisis point came when he wasin year six, his final year at primary school. Hisfrustration with his own difficulties in schoolmanifested itself in an anxiety disorder whichleft him labelled a ‘school refuser’ – thereality was that he was so fearful of failurethat he ran away from school regularly andisolated himself from school life for sixmonths, during which time I became his carerand teacher.”

“I’m a single parent with two children. It had amassive impact on me. I couldn’t go to work,”she adds. “It is extremely difficult for a parentbecause the judgment that goes with it isimmense. “People questioned my parenting andassumed he was just naughty but they didn’tunderstand that there was more to it than thatand there was nowhere to go for help.

“I had teachers say to me: ‘With all duerespect, you can’t even get him to school’. “They hadn’t seen him that morning with hishead down the toilet because he had madehimself sick with worry. “Once he climbed outof the window on to the roof to avoid school. We have had the police out looking for himwhen he has run away.” Ann adds: “When I wastrying to help him learn at home, it was hardto know where to go for resources that I could afford.

“Some resources are very expensive, but thereare lots of affordable options. I spent so muchtime pulling my hair out trying to help him. Ithought there must be other people out therethat are going through the same problems. “I needed to build his self esteem and convincehim that he was not only able to learn but itcould be an enjoyable experience too.”

The website offers information on learningdifficulties that come under the SEN label, including Autism, Dyslexia, AspergerSyndrome, and Attention Deficit HyperactivityDisorder (ADHD) and links to helpfulorganisations. Ann will provide tips on ideasfor affordable learning, she’ll also writeregular blogs and will have guest bloggers whohave been through similar experiences. www.thegiftoflearning.co.uk

Choosing a secondary school for your childis one of the most important decisions anyparent has to make. The addedcomplication in recent years is thefreedom of choice, which allows parentsto choose from a wider area than ever before.

The best advice, therefore, is to startgathering information early. Schools andAcademies will all have open events toshowcase their students, staff and facilitiesand they will welcome students in Year 5 asmuch as those in Year 6. The decision has tobe made by the end of October of Year 6, soearly gathering of information while studentsare in Year 5 can be very helpful.

Gaining a clear picture of the way a schooloperates is most effectively achieved byvisiting during the normal school day. Mostschools will welcome the opportunity to showpotential students the facilities and to answerquestions about the curriculum and, forexample, arrangements for care, guidance andsupport. Understanding what a school offersin terms of extra-curricular activities is alsovery important as this can have a significantimpact on the development of students asyoung people.

Secondary school is a great opportunity tolearn new skills, experience a range ofactivities and broaden personal horizons, all of which is just as important as gaining qualifications.

Molly’s Guide Easy Years FoundationThree years ago, the Government introducedthe first formal framework for pre-schoolchildren, called the ‘Early Years FoundationsStage’. This was a regulatory framework whichall early years’ providers were obliged tofollow, if they were to be registered withOFSTED. This included child-minders, nurseryschools and day nurseries, in addition to out ofschool clubs caring for children aged up to theend of the Reception class.

Sarah Steele, Managing Director of The OldStation Nursery Group said ‘It caused someconcern in the media, with cries of ‘the nappycurriculum’ and it certainly caused someheadaches for providers, with a considerableincrease in record keeping and measuringchildren’s progress. Last summer the newGovernment implemented a review to see howthe EYFS was working and whether it requiredchange. The outcome of this is the ‘revisedEYFS’ which now comes into place September2012’

‘Many parents may not have heard much aboutthis and certainly as a nursery company we areplaying down the changes, as they should be‘tweaks’ rather than a big overhaul. Childrenin nurseries or with child-minders shouldcertainly not see any difference. So, what willchange in the revised framework?’

1. Areas of learning & development: nowconsist of three prime areas and four specificareas. The prime areas cover the knowledgeand skills which are the foundations forchildren’s school readiness and futureprogress, which are applied and reinforced bythe specific areas.2. Early learning goals and assessment: insteadof 69 goals, there will now be 17. Progresscheck at age two: the revised EYFS introducesa requirement for providers to reviewchildren’s progress when a child is aged

between two and three. A short writtensummary must be provided to parents orcarers, highlighting achievements and areas inwhich extra support might be needed, inaddition to describing how the provider willaddress any issues. 3. Play and teaching: it has been made clearerthat providers are responsible for ongoingjudgments about the balance between playand teaching, between activities led bychildren and activities led or guided by adults. 4. English as an additional language: therelevant requirements give clearer focus onthe reasonable steps providers must take, including the assessment of children’s skills inEnglish.5. Wrap-around and holiday care: theframework now makes clear that the EYFSrequirements do not need to be delivered infull when children spend limited amounts oftime in a setting.‘These are the main changes’ says Sarah ‘fornurseries and child-minders to consider, soparents might want to ask their own providerto explain how they are going to meet theseneeds. There are also a number of changes tothe welfare requirements, including allsettings to update their policies andprocedures to cover mobile phone and camerausage, as a result of some of the issues thathave arisen in this area over recent years.’What does it mean for parents?‘Mostly you should see little change, but forparents of 2 year olds there is a requirementthat you receive a written ‘development’report in their second year. The Governmentwill provide examples of good practice forthis, but will leave each provider to chooseexactly how they will do this. Again, ask andfind out what your child’s carer is planning.’ ‘Generally the revisions to the framework havebeen welcomed; any slimming down ofadministration and record keeping frees upstaff to spend more time playing.
