GREETINGS from the Editor!

I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Christy Reed and I am a member of Molalla Chapter 1751. I have been a member for 17 years (funny how that coincides with how many years I have been married to my wonderful husband, Rick Reed, OMA Vice President). I'm really excited that I have been given the opportunity to create this newsletter for you. I have been the Editor of our Lodge newsletter for a little over 3 years. As well as creating the lodge news-letter I also maintain the Lodge Facebook page and take most of the pictures at Lodge events. OMA feels that we can better serve our readers and save costs by distributing this quarterly newsletter electronically (no more subscription fee’s!) . As we progress through the years, most of us have become more familiar with PCs and the Internet. The time for change is now! Of course we rec-ognize that there are still many members who don’t have access to a computer so I will strive to mail your newsletter to you. I welcome feedback. If you have a thought on anything that would make this publication better or easier reading I’d like to hear from you! Deadline for submissions pertaining to State or International business will be on the Wednesday after quarterly meetings (so the next deadline is Wednesday, January 30, 2013 for our Q4 issue). Happy Thanksgiving, A Very Merry Christmas, and a Healthy & Happy New Year!

Ski-to-Sea Council of Higher Degrees

Greetings! I enjoyed the annual banquet held at The Dalles lodge. It was a wonderful evening. At our meeting on October 27th in Stayton we had a great turnout followed by a fun night of costumes, Moose Races and The Not-So-Newlywed Game. My Board this year is: Secretary-Treasurer Sandi Wells (Bend); Vice President Kurt Kaser (Redmond); and Chaplin SueAnn Bradley (Waldport). Charlie Meithoff is serving as the Sargent-at-Arms. As President last year I leaned a couple of things. First, I don’t think there is enough of an un-derstanding of what the Council of Higher Degrees is. Quite frankly the name itself is intimidating. If I had not had a men-tor like Virginia Honeywell to clue me in that I was qualified to be a member once I had my Academy, then I would still be sitting in the other room while Warren attended the meet-ings. Please communicate to your members that anyone

with their Academy or that is Moose Legionnaire is encour-aged to join. Then, please communicate the reason we exist. The reason it to ASSIST the Membership and Membership Retention Chairmen in their duties to retain our existing mem-

bers. Secondly, we need to RECOVER members. Whats the difference? Retention is keeping the members we already have, recovery is getting back those members we have lost. The CHD is the best solution to our membership woes. Men and women working as a unit to retain and recover members is a very powerful body. My goal for the coming year is to have each unit of Ski-to-Sea have a Higher Degree Committee actively working with the Loom Membership Chairman and Chapter

Membership Retention Chairman. I look forward to seeing many of you in Lincoln City at our next meeting in January. Have a Happy Thanksgiving, A Blessed Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

Suzy Kilby, President, Higher Degrees Ski to Sea Council

~ REGIONAL MANAGER NORM DEAN~

Thank you to everyone who attended the Annual Convention in Klamath Falls! It was an out-standing convention and our official visitor, Byron Dalton, Assistant General Governor, had nothing but praise for the Oregon Moose Association and our Members. The presentations were outstanding and I believe members took home vital information to their Lodges. Membership continues to be THE most important item on all the Lodge agendas. You must en-courage your members to sponsor new members at all times. In order for this Fraternity to thrive, we need new blood, new ideas and new enthusiasm. Moose International is cur-rently running the "Heard of Moose?" campaign. But, that's not enough! Each Lodge needs to put to-gether their own Membership Campaign to encourage your sponsors. If you need ideas or assistance with campaigns, please don't hesitate to contact me or Bob Isom for assistance. At the other end of the spectrum, we need to close the back door to dropping members. Pick up the phone, make an in-person visit to those members on the arrearage list and see why they don't want to pay their dues. You won't save them all, but when they know you care, you'll save a few. And re-member, the Councils of Higher Degrees are there to help you with your membership retention. Use them!

We're looking forward to the 2013 convention in Milwaukee May 24-29th. Convention Registration and Hotel reservations are now open and you can visit the International Website to find the information. A couple highlights ... we'll be traveling to Mooseheart on Saturday, May 25th, to celebrate the College of Regents Conferral, the Pilgrim Degree of Merit conferral and Mooseheart Graduation Day! All that plus celebrating 100 years of that gorgeous campus. You won't want to miss it. Make your plans now to attend. One more event ... the Moose Legion is again sponsoring a fun night and have hired "Larry the Cable Guy" for the entertain-ment. That should be wildly entertaining! Thanks so much for all you do for this great Fraternity!

Norm Dean Regional Manager for Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Washington [email protected] 360-790-1136 Heard of Moose?

Moose Legion Ambassador – Scott J. Varvel It is my pleasure to send out good news to all of you hard working Moose Legionnaires. All three of our Moose Legion jurisdictions have met the fi-nancial obligations for the Youth Awareness Scholarship Fund Program, the Moose Legion President’s Project, and the Moose Legion Capital Project of two Vans and refurbishment of the Camp Ross Bunkhouse Roof. In addition, all three of our Moose Legion jurisdictions fall into the Charity Division (201-300 mem-bers) for the Endowment Fund Competition, and as of the end of September report, Beaver Moose Legion is in 5t`h place, Crater Lake Moose Legion is in 14th place and Columbia Moose Legion is in 20th place. Having been to two of the Moose Legion celebra-tions since that report was generated, I can assure you that those standings will be on an upward swing in the near future. To date, two Moose Legion Celebrations visitations have been made to Crater Lake Moose Legion and Columbia Moose Legion and one to Beaver Moose Legion. I have also attended a Mini-Celebration at Waldport for the Beaver Moose Legion. I had the pleasure of presenting the Moose Legionnaire of the Year Cer-tificates to the winners from Crater Lake Moose Legion and Co-lumbia Moose Legion. Our Deputy Supreme Governor Dennis Bendickson stood in for me at the Beaver Legion Celebration and handed out the Moose Legionnaire of the Year certificates to the respective winners from that jurisdiction. Now, the work must really begin! Our money obligations are doing great, but our membership numbers are staying way below where they should be. Since August 1st, the requirements for be-coming a Moose Legionnaire have been loosened up greatly. It takes just 6 months of good standing in the Moose Lodge or sign-ing 1 new member into the Moose Fraternity. Our numbers should be sky high this year, and yet, they are staying below normal.

Surely the group of individuals that “get things done” can rally to new heights by the next edition of this newsletter. Once again, things have already improved since the issuance of the September report, but all Moose Legion jurisdictions should be well over 50% of their goal for this year, and we should have many more mem-bers with their dues being paid for the coming year because they signed two new Moose Legion Members. The September report shows that we have only 6 members with 2 or more new members signed and enrolled, and 16 with 1 member signed and enrolled. Our great Moose Legionnaires should be able to triple (or better) that figure during this quarter! I owe a great debt of gratitude to Past Ambassador Marty Peterson for leaving the Oregon Moose Legion jurisdictions in great shape. It is making my job a lot easier to accomplish. With his guidance and the co-operation of all of the Moose Legion Presi-dents and their Boards (not to mention all of you great Moose Le-gionnaires) we have the opportunity to set all kinds of records for the State of Oregon. I am enjoying my visitations with all of you, and will make my-self available any time you need assistance, if possible.

Let’s have a great Moose Legion Year! Fraternally, Scott J.Varvel, Moose Legion Ambassador

OMA State President Michael Hauzenberger

I want to thank those Past OMA Presidents and Voting Members for giving me the op-portunity to serve as your OMA President. I will work hard and show much diligence performing the duties required for this position. I wish that I could have stayed at the Fall Convention but because of a family emergency I had to depart. I would like to thank those who sent messages of support and kindness to my fam-ily and I. Thank you for your kindness. Now just a little info on who

I am. I joined East Portland Moose Lodge in 1994 thinking that all I was going to do was play golf and have a place to relax with my wife. Boy was I wrong. The next thing I knew, I be-came a member of the Board of Officers and the rest is history. That’s enough about me! Have you “Heard of Moose”? What a great campaign slogan! Now it’s up to us to get the word out to our friends and family members telling them what it means to be a part of a Fraternity that cares for the young at Mooseheart and our elderly Members at Moosehaven. Tell them about the many programs that are put on by your lodge that are tailored towards all lodge members. I look forward to getting out on the road and visiting all the lodges within the association. If you need my help in frater-nal matters please give me a call and I will do what I can to help, you can email me at [email protected]. We are currently in the process of establishing a new Web site that will be loaded with tons of information. Our new OMA news letter Editor is Christy Reed at [email protected]. Please send her your email address so that we can start sending out our news letter electronically. That includes any article to be posted.

Fraternally,

Michael (HOSS) Hauzenberger OMA President

~Deputy Grand Regent Julia Robnett~

What a successful confer-ence with over 280 brothers and co-workers making the trek to Klamath Falls! Our official visi-tor, Past Grand Regent Libby, who was very informative and inspiring, is a wonderful repre-sentative of International. Our state chairmen were well pre-pared with presentations giving us a wealth of information about our Mooseheart programs. Hope-fully they inspired all of you to enroll members, support our char-ity projects and get your commu-nity service programs working. Congratulations to the "dozen" green cap recipients. You worked hard, but there are always more goals ahead. Continue to work with your chapter so that you may receive your cap and gowns. Trish, you did a wonderful job as deputy this year. We all thank you for your successful work. Your leadership sets a high standard. I am so honored to have the chance to serve as Deputy Grand Regent of Oregon. I thank you for your support and well wishes and would love to visit your chapter. Please let me know if I can help in any way. I hope you will all continue working toward a successful year...reaching toward your personal goals and the chapter Award of Achievement. Tell our story. "Heard of Moose?" Absolutely!

Love to you all, Julie

I want to express my

sincere appreciation for the

cordial and fraternal recep-

tions Roberta and I received

at every lodge visit we

attended last year. OMA

members live and breathe

the family characteristics

Moose members aspire to

everywhere, and Roberta

and I are honored to be

part of the Oregon WOTM and Moose Association. We continue to face financial challenges as our

Fraternal Units struggle in the current economic

state. However, we offer as affordable socializing as

any competitor, in a much safer and less annoying

environment than most – in addition to the noble

fraternal activities we do that most individuals

would be proud to be part of. Active and interesting

calendars, visible community involvement, and

other “differentiators” that we can employ are

crucial to keeping our current members and enticing

new ones. And, as we all know, membership is vital

to our survival – that is worth repeating: member-

ship is vital to our survival. Mike appointed some

exceptional brothers to assist with increasing our

lodges’ financial and membership growth – we all

need to work with them, in earnest, to continue

successful projects or to turn-the-corner on those

that are not doing so well. As Phil says, “just do it!” Finally, I want to recognize the exceptional

effort the La Pine Chapter did for my hospitality

suites. They held several fund raisers throughout

the entire year for purchasing the foodstuff, and

they had teams working in the kitchen for a week or

more prior to the conference and the convention

preparing the various dishes. A special thanks to

1851’s coworkers for doing what they do.

Fraternally,

Bob

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS WOTM Chairman Julia Robnett

Soon we will have new elected officials in our communities with which to get acquainted and share the story of Mooseheart and Moose-haven . Inform them of our local community service projects. Re-member, our community service is what keeps us "non-profit". En-courage anyone from your lodge or chapter to monitor local, county or state issues and bring them to the attention of your officers to enable us to protect our organization and what we stand for. A reminder, with the holiday season approaching, be sure that you follow the correct procedures with the use of your buildings and enforce the private policy regulations. Don't forget to vote. It is your right. GOD BLESS AMERICA

Beaver Moose Legion 171

President Jerry Schick opened the meeting in Stayton at 11 A.M. with Secretary/Treasurer Jim Belcher, Past President John Daibart, and Sgt.-At-Arms Charlie Meithof present. The Conferral Staff consisted of Orator Dave Lea, Faith Jim Carver, Hope Jay Davis, Charity George Bradford, and Loyalty Ken Hunt. They did a great job in their performance of the Moose Legion Ritual. Thank you. Past President John Daibart installed Jerry Railey of La Pine as Financial Director. Deputy Supreme Governor Dennis Bendickson spoke on the "Heard of Moose" Campaign in which a member can earn free dues for Moose Lodge or Moose Legion. He announced that the "Free Money" Campaign prizes would be drawn after October 31st and in-formed us that the next OMA campaign will be for a Valentine's week-end for two. Moose Legionnaire of the Year Awards were presented to John Daibart, Steve Troyer, Jim Belcher, Jerry Schick, Dan Bentemann, Ray Rose, Ron Newman, Robert Wiltgen, Jim Morris, and Rob Erbes. Mooseheart Undertakes $10M School Expansion/Renovation

Class of 2013 Honorary Members Will Help Make It Happen

Mooseheart School began its 100th year of operation on Monday, Aug. 20 ‐‐ marking

that milestone some 99 years after beginning classes in August of 1913, with just a few

new textbooks, more secondhand, and with social‐studies teachers "making do" by reading

out of the daily newspapers much of the time.

And while it didn't graduate its first high school class into the world until 1919,

Mooseheart's Class of 2013 will nonetheless celebrate its first 100 years of academics

on the Child City campus on Commencement Day ‐‐ Saturday, May 25, 2013 ‐‐ with the Class

of 2013 Honorary Member Program.

Anyone to whom Mooseheart is important ‐‐ members of the Loyal Order of Moose and

Women of the Moose, of course, but also family and friends of 2013 graduates, and resi‐

dents of communities in close proximity to Mooseheart ‐‐ are invited to become an Honor‐

ary Member of the Mooseheart Class of 2013!

To "enroll," simply complete and send the accompanying form!

You can enroll as an "Honor Student" for just a $10 donation. In return, immediately

after Commencement next May 25, you'll receive a commemorative lapel pin in coppertone,

a Mooseheart Class of 2013 personalized wallet ID card, and an Honorary Mooseheart High

School Class of 2013 diploma.

For a $50 donation, you're registered as an Honorary Salutatorian, and you'll re‐

ceive, after next May 25, a commemorative lapel pin in silvertone, the Mooseheart Class

of 2013 personalized wallet ID card, an Honorary Mooseheart High School Class of 2013

diploma, and a personalized commemorative pen.

For a donation of $100, you're designated an Honorary Valedictorian, which means

you'll receive, after next May 25, a commemorative lapel pin in goldtone, the Mooseheart

Class of 2013 personalized wallet ID card, an Honorary Mooseheart High School Class of

2013 diploma, the personalized commemorative pen . . . and a personal copy of the Moose‐

heart Class of 2013 Yearbook, with your name listed as an Honorary Valedictorian of the

Class of 2013.

All "Commencement Packs" for Honorary Members of the Class of 2013 will be mailed to

designated individuals (either donors, or those designated by donors) in early June,

following the May 25, 2013 Commencement ceremonies. For honorary Valedictorians, year‐

books will be shipped in the fall of 2013.

All proceeds from this program will be directed solely toward the planned $10 mil‐

lion reconstruction/expansion of Mooseheart School. The existing 77,000 square foot

school building, dating from 1954, will be fully renovated, with expansion to 92,000

square feet, providing new classrooms, new facilities for the NJROTC program, a multi‐

purpose auditorium/gymnasium, and new offices.

"We have a 58 year old building with asbestos tiled hallways, energy inefficient

windows, and original plumbing and heating," said Mooseheart Executive Director Scott

Hart, noting that much of the building is not air conditioned. "Our goal is to transform

the school much as we have done with the lives of countless children . . . participants

in the Class of 2013 Honorary Member program will help enable us to do so."
