Interview with Lois Lowry
Did you plan on writing a sequel for the
Giver?
No I was not planning at all to write a
sequel I wanted to leave the novel with a
sort of doubt and question. The reason
why I made a sequel was because everyone
was asking and they wanted another novel.
Why did you bring a biblical aspect to
the novel?
I wasn’t conscientious of adding any real
symbolism to the novel. If the idea would
have ever come up I would have never
followed through with it. I don’t have
much interest in writing religious books.
Many churches and religious families have
read this book to their students and
children.
How did you come up with the community for the novel the Giver?
I first planned to create a Utopian society and it was hard getting
everything to be perfect without war, crime, pain, memories, and that
other stuff. It wasn’t until later I found out I was not creating a
utopia but I was making a dystopia. So I just followed through with
it.
What has been your favorite novel?
Probably my first book A Summer to Die because it is what introduced
me to writing and what got me started. And it helped me a lot. I have
learned a lot from that novel I have began to feel less lonely and I
have learned to be excited about the little things.
1
Did anything in your childhood affect any of your novels in anyway?
Well my mother inspired me when we were very young to write. But my
father inspired me to write the Giver since he had memory loss I came
up with the idea to write a novel where nobody had memories.
Do you plan on writing any new novels?
I don't like talking much about my new ideas because once they are
out there i forget i feel like they lose importance so if I were i
wouldn’t tell you and i I am neither.
When are you going to stop writing?
I don’t plan on stopping i guess I’ll stop when i don’t have any more
ideas or any new books to write but i'm going to take advantage now
and keep writing great novels.
Why did you become a writer?
When I was very young I grew up in a house where all I could do was
read my house was filled with books. And my mother would read to all
of her children at night and whenever she could. Those two things
inspired by and introduced my to writing.
What were some of the things that inspired you to write this novel?
So when i was very young my father suffered from memory loss so every
time I would go down to see him he would forget things so it came to
me to write a novel where a someone would receive memories while he
knew very little about the outside world. A world without memory.
Were you surprised when the novel The Giver blew up, or did you have a
prediction it was going to be this successful?
I wasn’t so sure that it was going to be this successful but I could
tell when i was writing it that it was going to be one of my most
successful novels and it was great when i found out that it was a
hit.

Review: Through the Tunnel
Through the tunnel by Doris
Lessing is a short story where
the reader will learn the
theme that by overcoming great
obstacles and facing danger
alone, a young person may
acquire greater maturity and
independence. The Story takes
place in a safe beach and in
the wild bay where the author
uses imagery and suspense to
make the wild bay seem
threatening and dangerous. The
Author foreshadows the young English boys death by showing the young boy's
death in his mind. The story is about a young boy who separates from the
safety of his mother and the safe beach to go to the wild bay the dangerous
part of the beach. The sage beach symbolizes safety and comfort and the
young boys mother. The Wild bay symbolizes the outside world and its
dangers. The young man swims to the Wild bay and meets a challenge and he
works hard and with all his determination he is able to complete the
challenge, but with this challenge he learns a valuable lesson. The young

boy learns that his mother will always be there for him and that he
shouldn’t try to grow up too fast. Dramatic irony can be seen in the story
because the mother wanted to let him be free and learn from experience, but
really she was actually killing him. Because this boy was so determined to
accomplish this goal he put his life at risk several times and when he
accomplished his goal he nearly died. This novel was interesting because it
kept you at the edge of your seat, the author’s use of suspense and imagery
made me feel like the young boy and made me feel like I was in danger. The
theme learned from this story is significant and very important and it is
one that I will forever remember.

20 years later
My name is Jack is has been 20 years since I
was rescued from an isolated island. I was
stranded with many other boys and my chorus
group. We were on the island for no more than
a month and in that month millions of things
happened that made it feel like a year. I
wanted to hunt get meat kill! The other boys
wanted to stay eat nuts, berries, and fish and
stay in their shelters. But I wanted to kill a
pig, so I separated from our group and invited
whoever wanted to hunt and kill with me. And
we were attacked several times by the leader
of the other side of the island and his army
and by Simon who turned into the beast. After
all that trauma we were rescued and we all
were taken by a bout back home.
I was tutored all the way through high school because something about
the other students reminded me of the island. I decided to drop out of
college because I couldn’t deal with the fact that everyone knew me as the
crazy guy who survive I began to slowly separated from everyone. I never
wanted to have children because I’ve always been that they would become
what I became on the island. When I came back from the Island I remembered
being taken in by an orphanage because my parents had been killed in the
bombing that brought our plane down. The orphanage they gave me food,
clothes, and took me to a therapist which helped me see what had really
happened on that island. And what I regret the most was turning everyone
into what I became on the island. So I did my very best to fix myself but
now I think I can’t and never will. I can remember killing Simon murdering
him and it haunts me everyday.

Putting the magazine was great it has been one of my
favorite projects that I have done all year. Being able to
go in the writer's shoes and be able answer the questions
as if I was them was exciting. I also enjoyed choosing our
own story and being able to write our own review. The
review allowed to us to judge the novel and talk about it
as if we were recommending it to someone. Now the 20 year
prediction was by far my favorite. Getting to choose our
own character and make an assumption of what a character
from Lord of The Flies would be doing after being stranded
on an island and how it affected their life.
This has been my favorite literature class that I have ever taken I
was glad when I first met Mr.Johnson because he was nice and funny and the
year before everyone said he was mean and strict. Not only that but in this
class I learned a lot about understanding what I read and seeing things
that I would normally never pick up when reading. The Socratic Seminars
were really fun and interesting and I always look forward to them, because
they allowed us to see more than just the text on a book. The books we read
in class where great. My favorite book was The Pearl. This was my favorite
novel because it was different from all the others it wasn’t about a Utopia
or a sequel it was in its own category. The story was very interesting as
well.
