The Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail extends 35 miles from Rotterdam to downtown Albany. The trail parallels three important historic waterways: the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers and the Erie Canal. Largely built during the late 1970's and early 1980's, much of the trail was constructed directly upon the old Erie Canal towpath and former railroad grades of the area's first transportation routes.
The trail is continuous except for a .75 mile gap here in the City of Schenectady, where the trail route follows local streets. Please refer to the map above and to the trail blazers posted along the
local streets to follow the route through the city. The trail route passes through the Stockade Historic District, a 17th century neighborhood that is one of the nation's oldest and most significant cultural resources relating to early European settlement. The Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail is part of the NYS Canalway Trail System, a network of more than 260 miles of multi-use, recreational trails across upstate New York linking the Hud- son River with Lake Champlain, Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes, the Niagara River and Lake Erie. Major segments are adjacent to the waterways
of the New York State Canal System or follow rem-nants of the historic original canals of the early 1800s that preceded today's working Canal System. Numerous historic sites associated with this ancient travel corridor feature remnants of aqueducts, tow-paths and locks, which are among the oldest canal features in North America. Please take the time to explore the community and take advantage of the many cultural sites, parks, restaurants and lodging opportunities available near the trail.
