Mr. Gill’s Guide to ESSAY WRITING
MOGOWA- This acronym will help us organize our ideas during our PRE-
WRITING and POST WRITING essay writing steps. -Pre-writing is very important to
organize our thoughts so that our final Thematic or DBQ Essay will be sure to be a 5!
-We also must be sure we re-read our essay to check to see if we answered the tasks that were asked of us.

USE OUTSIDE INFORMATION TO ADD TO YOUR GRAPHS AND EVIDENCE AS WELL AS SPECIFIC DOCUMENTS THAT RELATE TO THE TASK (DBQ ESSAY)

W- Write I. INTRODUCTION (at least 5
Sentences) —The opening paragraph should accomplish two things: gain your reader’s interest in your subject, and identify the focus or thesis that you will develop in the main part of your essay.
Ways to draw your reader’s attention to your subject:
- Start with big or general overall ideas and as your introduction moves along become more specific.
The three steps method:
-Begin with a very general statement.
-Become more specific with each sentence you write.
-End with the Main Idea Sentence (MIS), and be sure that it is very specific.

W- Write II. BODY PARAGRAPHS—The developmental
paragraphs are the heart of the essay. They must clearly and logically support your thesis.
Parts of the body: (6-7 sentences) -All paragraphs should have a topic sentence and supporting sentences.-All paragraphs must clearly and logically support the thesis.-All paragraphs should flow smoothly from one to the next (use transitions: in addition, as a result).
- THIS IS WHERE ALL OF YOU EVIDENCE AND OUTSIDE INFORMATION WILL BE and YOUR DOCUMENT BASED EVIDENCE!
UNDERLINE VOCABULARY USED AND DOCUMENTS USED
- YOU SHOULD HAVE MULTIPLE BODY PARAGRAPHS
W- WriteIII.CONCLUSION—The closing or
summary paragraph should tie all the important points in the essay together and draw a final conclusion for the reader. (at least 5 Sentences)
The ending should:-Leave the reader with a clear
understanding of the essay topic.-Include author reflection beyond
repeating the thesis.-Summarize the body paragraphs.-Provide brief examples if necessary
to emphasize reflection.-End with a clincher sentence. A
clincher sentence leaves the reader with something to remember or think about (optional).

A- Answer the task -REREAD – The essay instructions
-Reread your Essay – ESPECIALLY your Body Paragraphs and be sure you CLEARLY answered the tasks.
