PILLAR TALK

L

Many of our members have mentioned the rumour that there is a secret cabal in MOG-NW, known only by the letters "MM." I can now reveal that the cabal does exist, because I participated in one of their ceremonies at the Crockett's in February.

The group calls themselves the Mental Mechanics. You may have seen them at our gatherings, grouped around the opened bonnet of a Morgan, hands in pockets, and occasionally kicking a tire. They make use of a technique which was originated in fin de siecle Vienna for the treatment of neurasthenic women; but they apply it to Morgans. They call it "the talking cure," or "Autoanalysis." Using this technique, the Mental Mechanics prescribe fixes for the various ills which befall a Morgan. (Some even assert that they can cure the ill from talk alone.)

At the Crockett's, instead of standing around a Morgan they were sitting in a circle with beers in hand. One of their number (a retired president of MOG-NW) known as "The Ringleader" opened the ritual with a question to me: "0 Ignorant One, what problem do you wish to present to this august body?"

Taking no offense at his archaic language, I told my story: I can't keep any water in the plastic overflow bottle on my Plus 8. Swiftly deciding to define their terms, the Mental Mechanics began discussing the Meaning of Water. Arcane concepts such as "water jacket" and "water pump" were bandied about until they concluded that I was speaking metaphorically and that I really meant the fluid in the cooling system.

I told them that I had asked Bill Fink for advice and he reported that Maurice Owen said to move the pressure cap from the overflow bottle to the radiator inlet. "A stupid move," they cried in unison, "There is no shoulder in the inlet for the pressure cap to seal against." They were, of course, right. Before I could respond with even a modest amount of astonishment at their brazen perspicacity, the Mental Mchanic to my left (also a past president of MOG-NW) pointed his finger at me and said, "Now I see what I but dimly saw before: THIS MAN HAS NO OVERFLOW BOTTLE; HE HAS BUT AN EXTENSION OF HIS TOP TANK!"

Then the Ringleader rapped his staff on the floor for silence. "I now speak, and I speak the truth. Your problem is that air is trapped in that part of the top tank which is higher than the level of the inlet hose at the plastic bottle. When the coolant heats up, the air expands more than the coolant and the coolant is forced back into the bottle until it fills the bottle and some of it is discharged onto the ground. When the engine cools down the coolant in the bottle is drawn back into the radiator, and no fluid is left in the bottle. What you must do is replace the air in the top tank with coolant: as the engine cools down, and before all of the fluid is withdrawn from the bottle, pour additional fluid into the bottle. Do this several times until all of the air in the top tank has been replaced by fluid. Meeting adjourned."

I faithfully followed the instructions of the Mental Mechanics. But I must have done something wrong for there is still no water in my overflow bottle. Maybe I should talk to it.

LaConner Spring Tour and Pazzo's Pizza Meeting

In a nutshell - fun, fun and more fun. The La Conner tour hosted by Bob Nelson was as always a blast. The rally put on by Glenn and Louise Jewett and Kay and Theresa Jones was great. The winners were 1st place Dick and Nancy Dice. 2nd place Jim and Carol from the Lotus club, 3rd place Dennis and Jacque Morrison. Bill Beavers came in last but what a trooper. He was travelling alone and had to pull off the road to read the directions.

The rain held off until Sunday - good job Bob and Loretta!

Our March meeting at Pazzos was again well attended. I didn't take down names this time though. If you've never been to Pazzo's you really must go. It's the best pizza I've ever had. Next month we'll meet at Godfathers in Totem Lake. See ya all there.

. .* * WHAT'S HAPPENING +. +.

A CALL FOR HELP: Does anyone have the mold for the boat anchor badge? The boat anchor badge is the solid brass casting representing the Morgan insignia consisting of wings on either side of a disc. This was the first club badge and was produced in about 1976; Tricia Crockett and Doug Barofsky arranged for a run of these badges by the Anacortes Brass Works. The badges were poured using a mold which is slightly bigger than the finished badge and appears to be made of pink plastic. The club wants to produce additional copies of the boat anchor badge, and although we can make use of an existing badge as a mold we prefer to use the original mold. This mold is lost. Bob Hauge remembers that it was in a box of club materials that left his possession about five years ago. The following members have searched for the mold but do not have it: Bob Nelson, Jean Tinnea, Jacque Morrison, Nancy Dice, Doug Barofsky, Mac McClinton. Does anyone know where the mold is? ..Dick Dice.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Spring has 5s nd sports car weather is here; time o renew the

insurance, remove the dust cover and tune up your 'sleeping beauty." It

is also time to fill out your entry form for another Vancouver All British Field Meet. Yes, once again a bevy of British beastics will

gather on the green of VanDuscn Botanical Gardens on May 16. The

best little Victoria Day garden party in the Western Territories is now

in its seventh year. We have made a few changes in the format to make our day in the

arden more enjoyable for all. One of these changes involves the class

awards; this year we are going to shift our emphasis from the class

awards to a more desirable dash plaque. We will have just one "Most

Appreciated" award per class and everyone will receive a very

handsome cast brass medallion with colour inserts. This is like an

award in itself and ensures that every entrant will take home an

attractive momento. We hope this will also serve to encourage previous

entrants and those who feel that their cars are not concours material to

come out. It has also resulted in a slightly lower entry fee, so we feel

that this is a very positive move all round!

Canadian Airlines International is once again our touch appreciated

sponsor for this year's event. They will be presenting return tickets for two to London, England by means of a draw to be held immediately

following the awards presentation. To qualify for this prize your entry

must be postmarked by in idnight, May 9. Last year we had 272 pie'

registered entrants and the winner was Bill Spohn. Not bad odds for

such a good prize, don't you think?

In addition to the CA! prize we will have additional prizes for all

entrants and our overall awards for Entrant's Choice, Best Debuting

Restoration, Most Elegant Car and Neatest Little Car. Please remember

that winners must be present to claim their awards.

Another change for this year involves the classes; the Special

Interest class becomes Light Utility Vehicles (the LUV class) and we

have added Jensen. Riley and Nash Metropolitan. Triumph Various

ccomcs Triumph Spitlire/GT6 with the less common Triumph models

moving into the Post War Touring and Sports classcs. There will also

- a display class for British bikes. We feel that this gives fair ,resentation to the cars that are coming out in consistent numbers and

opefully reflects the final structure.

POSTERS AND T-SHIRTS

Commencing this year, the automotive art community will he

producing the posters and will feature a different artist every year. This

year Paul Butvila and Luf Linkert of Bob and Wally's Gallery of

Automotive Art have joined forces to produce a beautiful first class piece of work. The original artwork was commissioned by a Morgan owner

and they will he producing 250 posters from the original at S8.00 each.

One hundred of these posters will be numbered and signed by each artist

for S20.0() each. These will only be available at the Friday night "Nogin

and Natter" and at the Field Meet in the art display tent. If you are

interested in having it portrait of your car done by a leading artist and

used for next year's poster, please contact Paul Buivila.

Once again Bill Wilkinson of Wilkinson's Automobilia has come up

with a sharp design for this years T-shirt, a preliminary drawing of which

appears on the front cover of this entry form. These are always a favorite

for yourself or a friend and are available only at the 'Noggin and Natter"

and on the field on Saturday. Quantities are limited so plan to buy early.

Thank you, and we'll see you at the Gardens!
