Intended Learning OutcomesThis module presents a number of frameworks including neo-classical economic analysis; public choice theory and politicaleconomy in order to understand the role of government; the growth of government; the design of tax systems and theconsequences of the financing of public expenditures. The models used are critically evaluated both from analytical andempirical perspectives. Knowledge Outcomes Knowledge and understanding of: 1. The role of government in industrialized and developing economies 2. The nature of public expenditure and the factors that drive the growth of public expenditures 3. The nature and principles of taxation; the impact of taxation upon decision making in particular its effects upon savings,investment and the firm 4. Debt management and fiscal policy 5. Public sector budgeting; resource accounting and budgeting; cost benefit analysis and the private finance initiative.Transferable Skills The module contributes to the development of the following skills: 1. A structured approach to the analysis of public sector expenditure and its financing; the application of analytical frameworksto identify significant problems and to provide appropriate solutions for debate; 2. Examine the Value and credibility of generic models in marketing, including the marketing mix framework. 3. Discuss the development of relationship marketing theory, assessing whether it offers a credible theoretical alternative toother traditional theoretical models in marketing. 4. Examine the pursuit of science and scientific principles in marketing, assessing the arguments put forward to promote thescientific method. The 'The Crisis of Interpretation' in marketing. 5. Discuss the scope and domain of marketing and its legitimate application in the public sector and in not-for-profit contexts. 6. Analyse the incorporation of post-modern theories in marketing and consumer research Possible future directions inmarkets, consumer society and the potential impacts on future marketing practice.

In thisperspective, learners will be able to develop a structured reflexion about big issues related to globalisation and its links withfinance. 2. Differentiate and discuss several case-studies/events related to substantive themes such as: the nature of globalisation:economic, social, political, cultural phenomenon; Globalisation in historical perspective; the role of international financialmarkets in facilitating and driving globalisation; the role of international financial institutions: IMF, World Bank, etc.; the effectof financial globalisation on developing countries; Debt and crisis; Financial liberalisation: force for stability or instability? 3. Analyse the possibility of taming international financial markets: the Tobin tax.

In this module the importance and role of demonstrating academic integrity in academic work will be explained. Furthermore,this module upholds the university’s regulations on academic misconduct by clearly explaining to all students what constitutesplagiarism, collusion and other unfair advantages in assessment (including clear definitions and examples) and by providing afamiliarity with the penalties for academic misconduct.

The module will provide explicit guidance on how to demonstrate academic integrity, how to acknowledge the work of othersappropriately and avoid plagiarism and collusion, including explicit training in how to reference any relevant type of existingwork. This will be delivered through a combination of course materials, appropriately contextualised instruction andexperiential learning opportunities, and the compulsory completion by each student of an on-line tutorial on avoidingplagiarism, which will be recorded.

Formative assessmentEach Unit Task serves as a mini formative assessment as each task is submitted and presented and the feedback on it isprovided by the module leader (orally at a seminar and/or in writing on a discussion forum) and by peers (orally at a seminarand in writing on a discussion forum).

The individual work on the final assessed assignment is supported through staged development and presentation of theassignment sections in Unit Tasks 5, 6, 13 and 21 and at Seminars 2, 6, 10 and 12 and the discussion forums associated withthese seminars
