Introduction to tourism
Topic One
What is Tourism?
Activities connected with:• Trips taken by people outside their habitual residences; • aimed at satisfying their needs for sightseeing, study,
leisure or recreation; • in a certain period of time.

Activity 1: tourists’ travelling purpose
Discuss the following questions based on your own experience and observation:
• Who are the tourists?• Where do they come from?• What are their travelling purpose?

What is a tourist?
Tourist means a person who travels for either tourism or for other
purposes combined with tourism, except for those who go to study,
work or practice their professions to get paid at the places of
destination. There are two type of tourists:
•Domestic tourists:
Vietnamese or foreigners
who are working in Vietnam,
travelling within Vietnam.
• International tourists:
Foreigners travel from
another country to Vietnam
(Vietnam Tourism Law, 2005)

Purpose for travelling
Leisure: to have fun!
Holiday: to enjoy the destination
- culture, festivals, activities,
attractions, beaches, food, etc.
Visiting Friends and Relatives:
e.g. for Tet, family events such as
weddings, or to visit each other.
Business: attending conferences,
meetings, trading, study, etc.

The Tourism Cycle
• The particular sequence in which tourism business services are
used by tourists
• Each business in the Cycle fills a particular need or several needs
of the tourist. However, they together provide a tourist experience.

Tourism attractions are selected tourism resources that induce
tourists come to the destination. There are three types of
tourism attractions:

attractions in the map.
• Describe significant attributes of each attractions.
• Presents group discussion outcomes
• Comments and inputs from other groups

Activity 7: Knowledge of your destination
• Break into four groups.
• Identify available tour/services as requested for
each group

- Group 2: identify 10 places offer accommodation service
- Group 3: identify 10 place offer food and beverage
service (cafe/bar/restaurants)
- Group 4: identify 10 places for shopping
• Describe the products/services/ places
• Explain why they want to introduce these places to
tourists
