    Overview

    I'm a firm believer in the incredible importance of anthropology, not just in school but in our

    everyday lives Introductory anthropology classes, li!e this one, are pac!ed with information that

    is directly relevant to all of us and should be both interesting and e"citing #his class probablywon't reach this height by itself $ if you give it a shot it might actually pay off for you

    #he goals of this first module and chapter 1 are to introduce you to the field of anthropology and

    to describe the goals and methods of the primary subfields #he focus of this introductoryanthropology class is the subfield of physical anthropology and we will delve in more detail into

    what this aspect of anthropology is all about

    %hysical anthropology has been described as &hardest of the soft sciences and softest of the hardsciences& and no matter how you see this e"citing field, it is a science As a science, physical

    anthropology is subject to the scientific method a process that is crucial to our understanding of

    humans and our place in the natural world

    Objectives

    (pon completion of this module and chapter 1, students will be able to:

    )efine anthropology and list its major subfields

    Identify the major research areas within physical*biological anthropology

    )iscuss the importance of the biocultural approach to the study of human evolution

    )iscuss the anthropological perspective

    Apply the scientific method and have !nowledge of its application to physical

    anthropology
