Exploring Limiting Beliefs

Introduction

This module will discuss limiting beliefs and how dismissing can adversely affect your life. It will also introduce how to get your life clear through Nevillizing, the Ho’oponopono process, and through two new intentions: ego and divine intentions. These techniques, coupled with the right motivation, can be incredibly powerful!

Objectives

After studying this module, you should be able to accomplish the following:

› Clarify how dismissing can affect your life.

› Explain how Nevillizing is a powerful step for opening up the Universe.

› Describe how letting go, and not expecting a result (by turning need into mere want) can open doors you never thought possible.

› Identify what you’re dismissing and how you can open yourself up to new possibilities.

› Explain the difference between ego and divine intentions.

› Engage the release that comes from Ho’oponopono.

Pre-Assessment

To assess your current level of understanding about the topics in this module, please answer the following questions. (A Success Journal is available for you to write in, at the end of module 16.)

1. I find myself self-sabotaging my own success: ___never; ___some of the time; ___once in a while; ___all the time. Why?

2. I have a strong skeptical radar; consequently, I find myself saying “yeah right”: ___never; ___some of the time; ___once in a while; ___all the time. Why?

thought about it, I realized my friend was brilliant at dismissing every book, concept, guru, self-help method, or healing approach he had read or heard about. He was not directly negative or purposely critical. He sincerely wanted something that would work in his life. But he was unconsciously dismissing everything that came his way.

At one point, I told him about a spiritual teacher I once studied with. I told him that people said, “Your teacher was obviously enlightened. He radiated it.” My friend cut in and said, “I’m sure there are people who saw that guru and didn’t think he was any smarter than a paper bag.” Well, maybe my friend was right. But my friend was also unhap-py, and I think there’s a lesson here!

When we dismiss people and ideas because other people don’t agree with them, we may be right; however, we may also be dooming our-selves from great opportunities. By dismissing what could work, we may be dismissing our own growth and potential. We may be dismis-sing great possibilities for our futures!

It doesn’t matter if the book you read is loved by anyone else. It does not matter if the teacher you admire is admired by anyone else. It does not matter if the healing method that worked for you doesn’t work for everyone. What matters is you: YOUR happiness, your health, your healing, and your well-being. Remember, no single method works for everyone; no teacher is right for everyone; and no book is going to inspire everyone. It all comes from within you. You are the first and final authority on your life!

Now, rather than dismissing what is possible, so that you can be right, consider what you CAN accept so that you can grow? Which would be more important to you? Dismissing is also a way to deflect ideas that could actually help you (it’s often a self-defense mechanism). If you dismiss the book, the idea, or the method offered to you, you may get to be right, and stay right where you are!

Over the years, all the successful people I know have accepted new ideas (tools) into their lives. Many of them have spent thousands of dollars on personal growth and self-study, and never regretted any of it.

The key is to not dismiss or disapprove, but to digest. Let me explain this point with the following occurrence:

I had dinner with some friends of mine. One friend complained about her job. From her perspective, there was no way out of the misery she of her workplace. According to her, she had a bad boss, bad hours, bad pay, etc. You name it, it was bad.

Later that evening, some other friends joined me and my unhappy friend. As chance would have it, one of them had connections to my unhappy friend’s workplace. He gave my unhappy friend a name and said that this person could help her resolve her issues. He went on to say that this connection was a supervisor, a head of many departments, and could probably resolve whatever was wrong with her situations.

I was stunned. It was magic happening right before my eyes. But what did my unhappy friend do with her new information and new hope? She dismissed it! She didn’t write down the name or the number, or show any sign that something wonderful had just happened.

Do you see how this works? She didn’t digest the help; she dismissed it! Sometimes we self-sabotage the very things we say that we want. We simply dismiss the good things that come our way.

People often write and ask me, “What one single product can I get that will transform my life?” When I give them a suggestion, and tell them to find it on a particular website or at a particular store, some will go right out and buy it. Yet, many other people complain because it costs ninety-nine dollars. Ah, of course it costs money. And that’s incredibly low for a studio-quality, life-changing set of six audios programs. I think to myself, “Are they going to pay it and get what they want, or are they going to dismiss the greatest self-help material of all time?” Do people want the good they say they seek, or don’t they?

Here’s another example about dismissing and not digesting, from my own guilt:

I received a letter in the mail about a new audio program about dissolving illusions. I read the letter, but then I dismissed it. I figured it was simply stuff I had already heard before and probably recorded myself.

Then, a few days later, I received another letter. This time it was from a different source; however, it was selling the exact same audio-program. I read it over closely. I thought, “This is interesting, but I bet there’s not much new in it for me.” I placed the letter aside.

An hour or so later, I suddenly realized that I was doing the very thing I am warning you not to do: I was dismissing an opportunity to learn! I dug out the mailing, filled out the order form, and dropped it in the mail. The audios will be sent to me.

The point is not that you buy everything that comes your way but that you don’t automatically dismiss everything that comes your way either. Sometimes a dismissal is a mask. It can be your self-sabotage at work, keeping you where you’re at. To grow, you must be open.

Again, you are the final authority on your life. Tune in to yourself and do what’s right for you. As you do, be alert to those times when you may be dismissing the next real gift that comes your way. Sometimes, you have to let your guard down, and let life in.

Nevillizing

One of my favorite spiritual authors is Neville Goddard. He wrote such classics as Out of This World and The Law and the Promise. He was a charming character who seemed to have access to a world most of us don’t see. He taught people how to use their imaginal mind, add feeling, and create results. He once said in a lecture the following:

“I urge you to use your imagination lovingly on behalf of everyone, and believe in the reality of your imaginal acts. If you have a friend who would like to be gainfully employed, listen carefully until you hear his voice tell you of his new position. Feel his hand clasp yours. See the smile on his lips. Use every sense you can possibly bring to bear into the imaginal scene. Persist until you feel the thrill of reality, then drop it and let that scene fulfill itself on the outside.”

You may have noticed that Neville didn’t say to just focus on the image of your friend getting a job. He also advised you to hear your friend’s voice, to feel your friend touch you, and to feel the thrill of reality of the scene having taken place.

Neville’s great contribution to the science of attracting your own real-ity was the idea that you must first feel the thing you want, as if you already had it. I call this Nevillizing your goal.

In one old book I have by Neville, he signed it with the phrase “Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.” That’s the key. That’s the secret. You have to learn how to Nevillize your goal by assuming the feeling of the wish fulfilled.

What Neville was suggesting is that you must feel whatever it is you want to attract, and you might see it in your mind. However, until you feel it as already complete, you will be missing a key step in the attrac-tion process. This step is missing from virtually all self-help books, and from most hypnosis, visualization, and other mind-expanding programs.

“Assume the fee l ing o f the

wish fu l f i l l ed .“

To illustrate what it’s like to feel like you have already accomplished something, consider this example:

If your goal is to make $200,000 in sales year, what would that feel like, once it’s accomplished. In other words, what would it feel like to have what you want, right now? Be specific. What would you do with the money? What debts might you have paid off (or down)? What might you have purchased? What might you have saved? What good might you have done with the money?

Remember, with Nevillizing, you need to feel (visualize) your goal AND feel it as though you have already accomplished it!

The Ultimate Secret

In addition to Nevillizing your dreams, your wishes, and your goals, there’s another secret that increases your ability to attract what you want: to want it without needing it!

When you are detached from the outcome, you disconnect from every-thing that could sabotage your success. The Attractor Factor kicks into overdrive, when you state your intention and you are happy whether you achieve it or not. This is a delicate balance, but it’s a major secret to how the Universe works.

In other words, in the world of everyday reality, struggling to achieve something causes the opposite forces within yourself to kick into play. But when you come from an inner place of serenity, and you go with the flow towards your wishes, you have upped the odds of your achiev-ing them. Your peace will attract peace.

As Deepak Chopra wrote in his book, The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire:

“Intention is not simply a whim. It requires attention, and it also requires detachment. Once you’ve created the intention mindfully, you must be able to detach from the outcome, and let the Universe handle the details of fulfillment.”

In short, you fully activate the Attractor Factor when you let go. And there’s the secret: you maintain your overall goal and you move towards it, always being sensitive to something better being offered, but you are not attached to the outcome, either.

“ Intent ion i s not s imply a

The Want and the Need

Several years ago, I cosigned a loan for my then “Web-guy” to purchase a car. I’d never cosigned for anyone, and I’ll probably never do it again. But the experience was useful for me; and in a moment, it will be use-ful for you, too. This is what happened:

Over the years, he would miss car payments, and I’d get a call from his bank. Then, I’d have to find him, financially bail him out, and hope the situation improved. But it didn’t.

His bank called again. This time, they said they couldn’t find him and that he was several months past due. (By this time, he was no longer working for me.) The bank was demanding complete payment of the loan. Right away. I began to search for the guy who had skipped out on the car loan. I called every number I had for him, and I wrote every email address I’d ever known him to use. I searched for him online. I even had my chief assistant spend time shaking trees to see if he would fall out of one of them.

One of my closest advisers said, “He’s gone. You’ll never find him. And if you did find him, you’d never get a dime out of him. Pay off the loan to close the case and protect your credit.” I agreed, and I paid off the loan. I wasn’t upset. I wasn’t concerned. I just let it go and kept clearing on any negative thoughts that came up. I let it go and attached no emotion to the event. Then a curious thing happened.

My old Web-guy contacted me on Facebook, asking to be my friend! I instantly let him in. I also wrote him and asked for his phone number. He knew why I wanted it. He wrote back, gave me his number, said he was sorry, and that he would do anything to resolve the issue. He also said he didn’t have any money.

I had already made peace with the situation, so I didn’t really have an attachment to any outcome. I figured if I could get him to create a website or two for me, I’d let it all go and chalk it up to experience. He agreed and created a wonderful site and a wonderful sales letter for it. But he also did something else that stunned everyone around me, which just made me smile.

He sent me a cashier’s check for the full amount he owed me: about six thousand dollars! He also said he would continue to do work for me, gratis, to show his good faith. No one around me could believe it. I had found the guy who skipped town. He did work for me, and he paid me off!

How did this happen? First, I wasn’t attached to him paying me back. I would welcome my money back, but I didn’t need it. Too many peo-ple want something to happen in their lives, but are desperate about it. That desperation creates (attracts) more things to be desperate about. I was okay whether the guy paid me or not. My energy was neutral.

Second, I saw the good in the guy, and he felt that. I know that peo-ple at their core are basically good. They want to be good. Sometimes, when they’re backed into a corner, they do things that they regret. But I knew the guy, and I felt he was a good soul. He would try to be good in whatever way he could.

These two steps don’t guarantee that you’ll get your money back from someone who borrowed or stole it from you, but they do guarantee that YOU will be at peace with the situation. It’s from that place of inner peace that you can attract what you desire; even if it’s from someone who skipped town, couldn’t be found, and was flat broke.

You may say, “Well, that’s how it happened for you, but how do you know it will happen for me?” I like to think of clearing as a life-long process that is much like peeling an onion. You peel away each layer (some thinner and some thicker), and you don’t stop for your whole life.

Finding Your Direction

How can you expect your intention to arrive if you don’t even know what it is? I frequently hear from people who are in the position of not being exactly sure of what they want. That’s when you allow inspiration to take hold.

No matter what stage of life you’re in, or whether or not you’re sure of your direction, seeing the opportunities when they appear is key. If you’re still battling with emotions from the past, you may never recognize new opportunities, and they will pass you by.

With this thought, I will offer a short word of caution: sometimes if you say you want something, but aren’t very clear about the result that you’re after; what you receive may be a mixed result.

Ego and Divine Intentions

Before I get too far, it’s important to discuss intentions in greater detail. Intentions are what you put out into the Universe as your goal. They are what you say you want. There are two types of intentions: ego and divine. Ego intentions are things that make you feel better about your-self and your life, such as a new car or lots of cash. Divine intentions

are those things that carry an idea of a greater good. They help others, as well as you. For example, a divine intention might be to create ideas and concepts that help others to reduce the emotional chaos in their lives. By helping them get what they want and need, you get what you want and need, as well. Wealth and riches are secondary with divine intentions.

Let me illustrate the idea of intentions with the following story:

At one time, I was a struggling, starving writer in Houston, Texas. I was just trying to make ends meet. I had a very modest amount of success, and I started teaching classes at a local college. While teaching, I realized that I liked helping others to get what they wanted. Yes, I wanted money in the bank. Yes, I wanted to make a name for myself and write more books. However, what I found was that by helping others and encouraging them along their path, the money and recognition flowed almost effortlessly to me. This started a cycle of learning and understanding; and over the years, as I discovered things that helped my own life, I shared them. Everything that I’d ever wanted, a nice car, a beautiful home in the hill country, and recognition in a global environment have come to pass because I set out the divine intention to help others!

I’m not saying that it’s wrong to want a new car or to see some other small miracle manifest in your life. These are great ways to confirm that you’re on the right path and to encourage you to take the next step. But, it also indicates how much more is waiting for you and what else is possible.

Some people have so many immediate needs that choosing a divinely inspired intention can seem very far away. However, it CAN be a step-by-step process, where your immediate needs are attracted first and then you open your life to the miracles that are yours. You may be in this situation yourself, and having trouble seeing how you can possibly wish for a miracle, when you’re just trying to get by.

Additionally, one of the principles of evoking the power of the Law of Attraction is to dare something worthy. The more worthy the goal, the more it concentrates this power and attracts results much faster. In effect, it supercharges the Law of Attraction.

Ho’oponopono

According to Wikipedia, “Ho’oponopono (ho-o-pono-pono) is an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness.”1 I use

it as the idea that YOU are responsible for everything that’s in your life—no matter what you perceive to be the source. It reveals that only by loving yourself can you accept responsibility and change your life, through cleansing and healing your higher self. You do this through these four simple, yet powerful, phrases:

› I Love You

› I’m Sorry

› Please Forgive Me

› Thank You

This technique allows you to continually clear those thoughts, emo-tions, and events that keep you from reaching that place of zero limits (where you have no limits). This work is completely internal and can profoundly impact people and events, with which you may not even have direct contact.

What? That’s the most frequent question I get when I talk about this technique; and quite honestly, it took me quite a while to wrap my head around this idea. The basic idea is accepting everything that is in your life. Instead of pushing things off on others or blaming circum-stances, you take responsibility for them. You first remind yourself that you are worthy of love and that love allows you to ask forgiveness for and release the events in your life. It is only through accepting total responsibility that you can attract true miracles to you.

Now, there is no moment that is too small or insignificant to use this technique. It can be when a person cuts you off on the freeway. It can be when you are upset about something your boss said. Think of how many small moments we deal with every day and how they affect us. If you have the power to create a positive experience, then why wouldn’t you do it? Simply by not reacting, taking responsibility, and knowing that you can affect your own outlook, as well as that of others, you begin to understand the true power behind this ancient knowledge.

No matter where you are, adverse things happen during the course of a day. When confronted with such events, this technique will allow you to release the events and to open yourself up to the good in every situ-ation.

Some of the most irritating people I encounter are those who inten-tionally goad me and try get a reaction out of me. I’m sure you run into these people, too. But, instead of letting it affect you, you really can turn it into something very positive and reap the rewards. No matter how bad you may feel at any given moment, a great deal of good can come from something that appears to be a humongous pile of manure.

We live in a world that is driven by beliefs: beliefs about who we are, what we do, and what we can accomplish. The Law of Attraction works by bringing us everything we think about; even those things that are hidden within our subconscious mind. Ho’oponopono is a tool that helps clear away those subconscious ideas that we aren’t even aware of, so we can attract all the good things that we want to our lives.

The Power that Comes from Release

When I was homeless, I spent a great deal of time in agony, before I knew anything about clearing or how to turn bad situations into good ones. The result was that I carried the humiliation and the embar-rassment of that time in my life with me for years.

I can say that I was in denial. I kept thinking that things would even-tually work out, and they did; however, during those times, I added to the mental story I had about myself. I gave my state of homeless- ness a meaning that I was undeserving and a failure. It took decades for me to understand the event and give it a different meaning. Make no mistake, I can’t change or recreate the past (and neither can you); but I can give it new meaning and allow it to become useful in my life.

It wasn’t until 1999 that I met Mark Joyner. He encouraged me to share my experience with others. At first, I was very resistant. Again, the old emotions of shame and humiliation surfaced, and I was afraid of what people would think of me. Here again, I let my old feelings of homelessness feed my fear, and it kept me from moving forward.

However, I finally start talking about it, and now it’s almost like I can’t stop. Once I released my emotional attachment to being homeless, my creativity really expanded. I also think that my past experience is one reason why I’m resistant to quick-fix, positive-thinking types of cures, which some people promote.

Over the past few decades, I never owned who I was as a homeless person, but now I own it. I claim it, and I have turned it into something positive, which helps others, as well. Without question, I have no desire to venture back and experience that time in my life, but now I under-stand the role it played in shaping who I became and what I can do to help others.

In reality, I had the power to let go of that experience all the time, but the story I told myself stopped me. Your stories, gathered throughout your lifetime, can limit what you want to accomplish. Just think, if I’d continued to deny my experience and hide it from the world, no one would have benefited from it! Certainly, I couldn’t have. I would have continued to harbor these stories in my subconscious, and they would have interfered with my forward movement in my own experiences.

You may be experiencing some trying times in your own life. No matter the problem or multitude of problems, these techniques can be the first step towards real change.

Post-Assessment

Use the following questions to evaluate what you have learned from this module. (A Success Journal is available for you to write in, at the end of module 16.)

1. Describe when and how you self-sabotage.

2. Describe ways that you dismiss, with powerful skepticism, and consequently miss out on learning opportunities.

Assignments

Review this module and write down any questions you may have for your coach.

Complete these exercises (on the pages that follow):

Nevillizing: Use this exercise to practice Nevillizing and to capture your experiences on paper. Remember to feel what you want to attract, as if it has already happened!

Dismissing: List ways by which you dismiss things in your life—things with which you come in contact but you choose to bypass, ignore, overly-criticize, etc.

Top Three Dismissings: List your top three ways that you dismiss things. Next, capture your powers of skepticism and apply them towards these habits of dismissing.
