EXERCISE: Your Body Compass Step 1: Climb into Your Body Sit comfortably in a chair, and take three deep breaths. Now feel your feet flat on the floor. Are your feet hot or cold? Feel the texture of the floor or your socks…notice the sensations. Now scan upward through your body, feel your ankles, calves and upward through your legs—notice any discomfort and just register it. Keep scanning upward through your body, your thighs, rear end, pelvis, up through your stomach. What do you notice about your stomach? What sensations do you feel there? Continue up your back, your chest, up through your shoulders and our through your arms, hands and fingers. Coming back to your neck and throat (what do you notice there?), and up through the top of your head. You may find yourself resisting this exercise or unable to feel parts of your body. That’s ok. Good to notice, right? Those numb parts of your body hold fonts of information for you as you continue this exercise and they thaw. Be patient with yourself and simply be curious. If you can only feel your big toe right now, great! Start there. Step 2: Tune into Your Body Compass 1. Think of a difficult time in your life you were unhappy and stressed. Take a moment to revisit that time in your mind, climb into your body and using as much detail as you can, answer this question: I feel these sensations in my body: (e.g. squeezing constriction in my chest like a boa constrictor, my toes are curling, my jaw is clenched like a vise, etc…) ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ This is your negative body compass reading. Give it a nickname (e.g. “the boa constrictor feeling”): My negative body compass reading nickname: _____________________________ Now, get up from your chair and take a moment to literally shake that feeling off. Sit again and we’ll find your positive body compass reading. 2. Think of a time in your life you were joyous. It could be a time in your life or an event. Take a moment to revisit that time in your mind, climb into your body and using as much detail as you can, answer this question: I feel these sensations in my body: (e.g. my heart feels like it’s expanding in my chest, my head feels light, my right calf is tingly, etc…)

_____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ This is your positive body compass reading. Give it a nickname (e.g. “the full heart feeling”): My positive body compass reading nickname: _________________________________ Step 3: Play Hot and Cold Do you remember playing the children’s game of “Hot and Cold”? In this game, one player — let’s say it was you — left the room while the others hid some object. Then you came back in and searched for the object, while the other players gave directions by shouting temperature words. When you were moving away from the object, they’d yell “Cold!” When you turned or moved toward it, they said, “You’re getting warmer.” When you discovered the hiding place, you were “red-hot.” You can use your body’s innate properties to play a high-stakes game of Hot and Cold. Your body knows the path to your purpose, and it does its best to tell you when you’re getting “cooler” or “warmer.” When you face a proposition that’s wrong for you, your body will try to go into the negative sensation you’ve identified above. When you’re headed down your true path, it will want to celebrate by moving into the positive sensation. Step 4: Evaluate Your Life You can use your Body Compass to determine how close you are to your ideal life, and what you need to do to come closer. To try this out, list three things you plan to do tomorrow: Activity No. 1: __________________________________________________________

Activity No. 2: __________________________________________________________

Activity No. 3: __________________________________________________________

Now imagine your body compass as a scale ranging from -10 to +10. Negative 10 being your strongest negative reading and plus 10 being your strongest positive reading. Rank each of the three activities above according to your body compass scale: Activity 1 Ranking: __________ Activity 2 Ranking: __________ Activity 3 Ranking: __________ You now have a clear idea to what degree each activity is aligned with your purpose. You can still choose to do each activity or not, however the better your daily activities read on your body compass, the faster you’ll be moving toward your life purpose.

Homework: Your Yearning Scavenger Hunt Schedule a date with yourself to go on a yearning scavenger hunt, noticing what makes you feel radically alive. Go to your calendar right now, find at least an hour this week, put your Yearning Scavenger Hunt on there. We know, kind of bossy, but this is the kind of thing that can slip by—don’t let finding your purpose slip by. Here are some ideas for how to embark on your Yearning Scavenger Hunt. Do some or all, or do your own thing, there are no rules. Well, that’s not totally true—the only rule is to do what feels good on your body compass. The goal is simply to notice what you notice, don’t try to make any meaning out of it. Be like a scientist and observe yourself. Record your “field notes” below.

• Go to the bookstore and let yourself wander, notice the sections you’re drawn to, which books you like.

• Go to Pinterest and pin whatever appeals to you, don’t try to analyze it. After, see what you notice.

• Create a Happy Basket Props to Martha Beck Master Coach Susan Hyatt for this one: put a receptacle in a high-traffic place in your house, where you can’t help but see it. As you notice things you’re drawn to, drop it in there. It could be a magazine, a skein of yarn, a small pet (maybe just put a photo in there) or an idea (you can write those down), truly anything. At the end of the week, go through your Happy Basket and take your field notes on what you notice.

• Whip up a mix tape Mixed tapes aren’t just for forlorn teenagers of the 80’s. List the titles of songs you’d put on your mix tape (Spotify is great for this), listen to your own song list, look up song lyrics if you feel compelled, again just noticing what you notice about your selections.

• Make a vision board Find images from magazines and the internet that make your body compass go woo! (It can be a big woo or a small woo.) Collage them into images on a piece of poster board.
