Objectives This module is designed to show
students how to properly assemble a
coherent paragraph by breaking it downinto its component parts. Uponcompleting the module, students should
feel prepared enough to construct theirown paragraph of 3-5 sentences.

Introduction A paragraph is a group
of sentences that work
together to make apoint. A good paragraphhas three parts-topicsentence, body, and
concluding sentenceeach serving a specificpurpose.

Paragraphs have a standard format orarrangement, moving from topic
sentence to body to concluding sentence.When writers follow this format, theygive readers important clues about how
to understand what they see on the page.

Topic SentenceA good topic sentence states the mainpoint. It is often the first sentence of a
paragraph. A good topic sentence givesthe reader a complete idea of what toexpect of the rest of the paragraph. It is
important that you include in your topicsentence everything you plan to includein the paragraph itself.

Developmental SentencesAlso known as the body of a paragaph,developmental sentences support the
main point. It is usually made up of aboutthree to six sentences which containfacts and details supporting the mainpoint. It is good to include at least one or
two examples in this section, in order tohelp the reader better understand yourpoint.

Concluding SentenceA good concluding sentence remindsreaders of the main point and often
makes an observation, depending on thesize of your paragraph. A paragraph thatis only 3-5 sentences in length doesnt
necessarily need to remind the reader ofwhat the topic is.
