Page 2: Module 2

The inspiration is from leaf falling that has one of softest

shape of the nature.

I choose to follow the path of falling leaf to simulate the

effect by air following to express my understanding of the

natural process.

I focus on one moment of falling path to simulate the

continuous path shape.

Digitisation

I learnt from tutorial resource for contouring my clay model.

I drew vertical line before took orthographic picture to

locate the contour. These views will be later be used to

digitize the model into Rhino more accurately.

Then, I cut my clay model following the contours, however,

as clay become hard, which made my model could not

be contoured accurately.

Page 4: Module 2

Digitisation

I faced a lot of problems when I was tracing

the contours with put the picture I took

before. By observing, I decide to parallel

tracing contours to front view and adjust

with right position to location my contours.

In somehow, the outcome model was very

disappointing, combination issues can be

considered to improve the more accuracy

model.

I tried to fix the model to what it should be,

however, I falied because of my familiarty

limitation with Rihono and realise there are

detail that I still need to simplify them

especially the curves, making them smooth.

Page 5: Module 2

Digitisation

After successfully transferring my

model onto Rhino, I tried to fix it

mostly like my original clay model,

however, due to inaccuracy

cutting damage and modeling

technique limitation, the final

modeling was not good as

expected,

Despite the fact that I had made

my model into a likely smooth and

more fluid form, I was still face a lot

of difficulties. Cannot restore

specific point on my model such

like two end points are not

represented my original model well.

Page 6: Module 2

Digitisation: 2D modeling

I started with my experimentation of

paneling tools by generating 2D grids.

I tried to use different shapes, models

and custom grids to form variety

model surfaces.

I also tried varies model with 3D

paneling, the outcome however

still disappoint. Those model

cannot presented as a good

lantern.

I have founded a previous design that inspire from

light lantern in architecture relevant my design

model.

Aichinger Haus, was designed by Hertl Architekten

as multistorey flat residential use which including

two units. Soft goods covering outside of this

building make it looks like a shine lantern.

The traditional Chinese

lantern is made by

paper folding in

somewhat, seems

paneling features.

Page 9: Module 2

This bring the ideal of traditional

Chinese Lantern model that could be

use for reference for developing my

design lantern.

Final model

Use paneling tool custom a

3D rhombus to presented the

surface of Chinese lantern

When considering which paneling

surface I would use for my final

design, I focus on two things; One is

the paneling looks fluid and

resembled the falling path and two

that the light would shine through.

Therefore, the combination of

lantern surface and fluid

appearance was made.

Placement on body

The lantern will be placed on shoulder as a

hanging decoration. The shoulder will fit

the curve at the corner of the form.

Reflection

By using digital technology that provides more opportunities and possibility to create

new forms of designing architecture. Architecture is getting to combine multidisciplinary

thinking to develop new ideas from other fields. The interaction of these different

industries have a significant impact on architecture framework and I realised that this is

essential to hold multidisciplinary thinking to accept new ideas and acquire knowledge

from different fields, rather than focus on only one disciplinary.

I faced a lot of problems while creating my model, , that remind me it is also important

to familarise with digital program, Rhino. Furthermore, I still have problems with using

Rhino in tracing contours and use more difficult NURBS surface.
