Food Based Lunch Pattern and Grade Groups

The NSLP meal pattern includes 5 components:Meat/Meat Alternate.Fruit.Grains.Milk.Vegetable with 6 subgroups:Dark Green.Red/Orange.Beans and Peas (Legumes).Starchy.Other.Additional.

3Food Based Lunch Pattern and Grade Groups

For SY 2013-14, the average weekly lunch must fall between the maximum and minimum calorie range for each grade group.

Saturated fat calories must be less than 10% of the weekly lunch calories.

Food manufacturers are allowed to list amounts of trans fat with less than gm. as 0 gm. on the Nutrition Facts label. As a result, a few products that list 0 gm. trans fat may actually contain trace amounts of trans fat per serving.

4

Food Based Breakfast Pattern and Grade Groups

Beginning SY 2013-2014, the average daily calories for breakfast for a 5-day week must fall within the minimum and maximum levels for each grade group.

5Food Based Breakfast Pattern and Grade Groups

At breakfast, a menu planner may offer the same food quantities to all children provided that the meal meets the requirements of each grade group. A sponsor could offer grade groups K-12 a single menu that falls within a range of 450-500 average calories per day to meet the requirement for each grade group.

The average daily amount of calories for a 5-day week must be within the range (at least the minimum and no more than the maximum values).
