INTRODUCTIONThistrainingisdesignedforyoutolearnsomeofthekeytherapeutictechniquesenablingyoutoachievethebestpossibleresultswithyourclientsofthefuture,startingfromtheapplicationsandhistoryofclinicalhypnotherapy,andhowtobringaboutahypnotictrance,throughtoavarietyoftherapeutictoolsthatyoucanalmostmixandmatchtohelpwithavarietyofissues.Ihaverunafull-timepracticeforthepastsevenyearsusingonlyamixofthesetechniqueswithprofoundresults,andI’msurethatyoucandothesame.ApplicationsforHypnosis:Hypnotherapycanchangelives.Itisaremarkableforceforchange.IknowthisbecauseIhaveseenithappenwithmanypeopleanditsapplicationsintherealworldisendless.Takeamomenttothinkaboutallthedifferentissueshypnotherapymaybeabletohelpwith.So-whathasHypnotherapythepotentialtohelpwith?FamousUsersofHypnosis:Mozart(1756-91)composedthefamousoperaCosiFanTuttewhilsthypnotised.ThomasEdison(1847-1931)inventor.HenryFord(1863-1947)carmanufacturer.

AlbertEinstein(1879-1955)physicist.SirWinstonChurchill(1874-1965)politician,countedbackwardsin3’sinordertostayawakeallnightandavoidtirednessduringWorldWarII.KevinCostnerflewhispersonalhypnotisttoHawaiitocurehisseasicknessduringthefilmingofWaterworld.AndyBryant,haircareconsultant,hittheheadlineswhenheunderwentavasectomyunderhypnosiswithoutanaestheticand,immediatelyaftertheoperation,wentbacktowork.Andyou,ofcourse.TheHistoryofHypnosis:(AnexcerptfromTheHypnoticWorldofPaulMcKenna-FaberandFaberLtd1993).“TheearliestreferencestohypnosisdatebacktoancientEgyptandGreece.Indeed,'hypnos'istheGreekwordforsleep,thoughactualstateofhypnosisisverydifferentfromthatofsleep.Bothcultureshadreligiouscentreswherepeoplecameforhelpwiththeirproblems.Hypnosiswasusedtoinducedreams,whichwerethenanalysedtogettotherootofthetrouble.Therearemanyreferencestotranceandhypnosisinearlywritings.In2600BCthefatherofChinesemedicine,WongTai,wroteabouttechniquesthatinvolvedincantationsandpassesofthehands.TheHinduVedaswrittenabout1500BCmentionhypnoticprocedures.Trancelikestatesoccurinmanyshamanistic,druidic,voodoo,yogicandreligiouspractices.”HypnoticPioneers:ThemodernfatherofhypnosiswasanAustrianphysician,FranzMesmer(1734-1815),fromwhosenametheword'mesmerism'isderived.Thoughmuch-malignedbythemedicalworldofhisday,Mesmerwasneverthelessabrilliantman.Hedevelopedthetheoryof'animalmagnetism'-theideathatdiseasesaretheresultofblockagesintheflowofmagneticforcesinthebody.Hebelievedhecouldstorehisanimalmagnetisminbathsofironfilingsandtransferittopatientswithrodsorby'mesmericpasses'.Themesmericpassmustsurelygodowninhistoryasoneofthemostinteresting,andundoubtedlythemostlong-winded,waysofputtingsomeoneintoatrance.Mesmerwouldstandhissubjectsquitestillwhileheswepthisarmsacrosstheirbody,sometimesforhoursonend.Isuspectthatthisprobablyhadtheeffectofboringpatientsintoatrance,butitwascertainly

quiteeffective.Mesmerhimselfwasverymuchashowman,conveyingbyhismannerthatsomethingwasgoingtohappentothepatient.Initselfthisformofindirectsuggestionwasverypowerful.Mesmerwasalsoresponsibleforthepopularimageofthehypnotistasamanwithmagneticeyes,capeangoateebeard.Hissuccessfuelledjealousyamongmanyofhiscolleaguesandthiseventuallyledtohispublichumiliation.Lookingback,itisquiteincrediblethathypnosissurvivedtheseearlyyears,becausethemedicalworldwasdeadagainstit.AnotherforwardthinkerwasJohnElliotson(1791-1868),aprofessoratLondonUniversity,whoisfamousforintroducingthestethoscopeintoEngland.Healsotriedtochampionthecauseofmesmerism,butwasforcedtoresign.Hecontinuedtogivedemonstrationsofmesmerisminhisownhometoanyinterestedparties,andthisledtoasteadyincreaseinliteratureonthesubject.ThenextrealpioneerofhypnosisinBritainappearedinthemidnineteenthcenturywithJamesBraid(1795-1860).PrimarilyaScottisheyedoctor,hedevelopedaninterestinmesmerismquitebychance.Oneday,whenhewaslateforanappointment,hefoundhispatientinthewaitingroomstaringintoanoldlamp,hiseyesglazed.Fascinated,Braidgavethepatientsomecommands,tellinghimtoclosehiseyesandgotosleep.ThepatientcompliedandBraid'sinterestgrew.Hediscoveredthatgettingapatienttofixateuponsomethingwasoneofthemostimportantcomponentsofputtingthemintoatrance.Theswingingwatch,whichmanypeopleassociatewithhypnosis,waspopularintheearlydaysasanobjectoffixation.Followinghisdiscoverythatitwasnotnecessarytogothroughallthepalaverofmesmericpasses,Braidpublishedabookinwhichheproposedthatthephenomenonnowbecalledhypnotism.Meanwhile,aBritishsurgeoninIndia,JamesEsdaile(1808-1859),recognisedtheenormousbenefitsofhypnotismforpainreliefandperformedhundredsofmajoroperationsusinghypnosisashisonlyanaesthetic.WhenhereturnedtoEnglandhetriedtoconvincethemedicalestablishmentofhisfindings,buttheylaughedathimanddeclaredthatpainwascharacterbuilding(althoughtheywerebiasedinfavourofthenewchemical

anaesthetics,whichtheycouldcontroland,ofcourse,chargemoremoneyfor).So,hypnosisbecame,andremainstothisday,an'alternative'formofmedicine.TheFrenchwerealsotakinganinterestinthesubjectofhypnosis,andmanybreakthroughsweremadebysuchmenasAmbroseLiebeault(1823-1904),J.M.Charcot(1825-1893)andCharlesRichet(1850-1935).TheworkofanotherFrenchman,EmileCoué(1857-1926),wasveryinteresting.Hemovedawayfromconventionalapproachesandpioneeredtheuseofauto-suggestion.Heismostfamousforthephrase'DaybydayineverywayIamgettingbetterandbetter'.Histechniquewasoneofaffirmationandithasbeenchampionedincountlessmodernbooks.Amanofenormouscompassion,Couébelievedthathedidnothealpeoplehimselfbutmerelyfacilitatedtheirownselfhealing.Heunderstoodtheimportanceofthesubject'sparticipationinhypnosis,andwasaforerunnerofthosemodernpractitionerswhoclaim,'Thereisnosuchthingashypnosis,onlyself-hypnosis.'Perhapshismostfamousideawasthattheimaginationisalwaysmorepowerfulthanthewill.Forexample,ifyouasksomeonetowalkacrossaplankofwoodonthefloor,theycanusuallydoitwithoutwobbling.However,ifyoutellthemtoclosetheireyesandimaginetheplankissuspendedbetweentwobuildingshundredsoffeetabovetheground,theywillalwaysstarttosway.InasenseCouéalsoanticipatedtheplaceboeffect-treatmentofnointrinsicvaluethepowerofwhichliesinsuggestion:patientsaretoldthattheyarebeinggivenadrugthatwillcurethem.Recentresearchintoplacebosisquitestartling.Insomecases,statisticsindicatethatplaceboscanworkbetterthanmanyofmodernmedicine'smostpopulardrugs.Itseemsthatwhiledrugsarenotalwaysnecessaryforrecoveryfromillness,beliefinrecoveryisSigmundFreud(1856-1939)wasalsointerestedinhypnosis,initiallyusingitextensivelyinhiswork.Heeventuallyabandonedthepractice-forseveralreasons,notleastthathewasn'tanygoodatit!Hefavouredpsychoanalysis,whichinvolvesthepatientlyingonacouchandtheanalystdoingalotoflistening.Hebelievedthattheevolutionoftheselfwasadifficultprocessofworkingthroughstagesofsexualdevelopment,withrepressedmemoriesoftraumaticincidentsthemaincauseofpsychologicalproblems.Thisisan

interestingideathathasyettobeproved.Freud'searlyrejectionofhypnosisdelayedthedevelopmentofhypnotherapy,turningthefocusofpsychologyawayfromhypnosisandtowardspsychoanalysis.However,thingspickedupinthe1930'sinAmericawiththepublicationwiththepublicationofClarkHull'sbook,HypnosisandSuggestibility.Inmorerecenttimes,therecognisedleadingauthorityonclinicalhypnosiswasMiltonHErickson,MD(1901-1980),aremarkableman,andahighlyeffectivepsychotherapist.Asateenager,hewasstrickenwithpolioandparalysed,butheremobilisedhimself.Itwaswhileparalysedthathehadanunusualopportunitytoobservepeople,andhenoticethatwhatpeoplesaidandwhattheydidwereoftenverydifferent.Hebecamefascinatedbyhumanpsychologyanddevisedcountlessinnovativeandcreativewaystohelppeople.Hehealedthroughmetaphor,surprise,confusionandhumour,aswellashypnosis.Amasterof'indirecthypnosis',hecouldputapersonintoatrancewithoutevenmentioningthewordhypnosis.Itisbecomingmoreandmoreacceptedthatanunderstandingofhypnosisisessentialfortheefficientpracticeofeverytypeofpsychotherapy.Erickson'sapproachanditsderivativesarewithoutquestionthemosteffectivetechniques.Overtheyear’shypnosishasgainedgroundandrespectabilitywithinthemedicalprofession.Althoughhypnosisandmedicinearenotthesame,theyarenowacknowledgedasbeingrelated,anditisonlyamatteroftimebeforehypnosisbecomesamainstreampractice,asacceptabletothepublicasavisittothedentist.LawsofAttraction:

Whilemany‘laws’canbe,andareappliedtohypnosis,threemajorlawsaregeneraltonearlyeveryformofhypnosisandhypnotherapy,includingself-hypnosisandconversationalhypnosis.

TheLawofFocus/ConcentratedAttention

Thislawhasgainedsomeattentionlately,thankstoafewbooksandfilms.Ithasbeencalledthe‘secret,’andthe‘lawofattraction,’amongothers.Inthesimplestterms,thislawstatesthatwhatwefocusonbecomesourreality.This

isduetohowthesubconsciousmindworks.Whateverwefocusonthemost,oursubconsciouspropelsustoward.Ifwearealwaysanxiousandthinkingaboutfailure,wesabotageourselves.If,ontheotherhand,wefocusonthebestpossibleoutcomeinanyscenario,wesetourselvesupforsuccess.

Itreferstotheprincipleofrepetitionofsuggestions.Whenweconcentrateattentionrepeatedlyonagoaloridea,ittendstoberealised.Inotherwordsifwefocusonsomething,thatthingbecomesareality.(Aclassicprincipleinformulatinghypnoticsuggestionsistorepeatthemseveraltimes.)

TheLawofReversedEffort

Theprincipleofreversedeffortprimarilyappliestomakingsuggestionstoproducephysiologicaleffects.This‘law’referstothefactthattheharderyouconsciouslyendeavourtodosomething,themoredifficultitbecomestosucceed.

Haveyouevertriedtonotthinkaboutsomething?

Forexample,trynowtonotthinkaboutapinkelephant.What’sinyourmindrightnow?Ifyou’relikemost,it’sabigpinkelephant,whileyou’restrugglingwithallyoumighttoimagineitaway.

Thisisasimple,classicyetpowerfuldemonstrationofthelawofreversedeffort.Whenwetrynottofocusonsomething,ourmindscan’tdoit.Thisisbecausethesubconsciousis,insomeways,notverysmart.Itdoesnotprocessnegativestatements.Whenyouthink“Iwon’tthinkaboutapinkelephant,”itonlyprocesses“I...thinkaboutapinkelephant.”

Thelawofdominanteffect/emotion

Thisprinciplestatesthatstrongeremotionstendtotakeprecedenceoverweakerones.Thus,onceagain,ratherthanappealingtotheconsciouswill,youwillfinditmoreeffectivetoconnectyoursuggestionstoadominantemotion.Inotherwords,asuggestionlinkedtoanemotionwilloverrideanyothersuggestionintheperson’smindatthetime.

Forexample,let’simaginethatyouwishtoquitsmoking.Youcouldremindyourself(orbetoldbyahypnotherapist)howbadsmokingisforyourhealth,usingcold,hardfacts.Youcouldalsopicture(orhaveahypnotherapist

describetoyou)howdevastatedyourfamilywouldbeifyousuccumbedtolungcancer.Youmightpictureyourownfuneral,pictureyourspouseandchildrentryingtogetbywithoutyou,picturethelonelinessandangertheywouldfeelatyourpassing.

Whichscenariohasmoreemotionattachedtoit?Obviously,thesecondexample,andthisiswhystrongemotionalscenariosandstatementsaremorepowerfulinhypnosis(andineverydaylife,forthatmatter).

Mostofthegeneralpublichaveamisconceptionofwhathypnosisreallyis.Thismisconceptionislargelyduetothecomedyhypnotiststhey’veperhapsseenonthetelevision.Theybelievehypnotistscancontrolormanipulatepeople.

Itisimportanttoexplaintoeveryclientwhathypnosisisandalleviatetheirpossiblemisconceptions,andtosetthesceneastowhattheclientcanexpectornotexpecttohappen.

Thereisabsolutelynoquestionofbeingcontrolledormanipulated,oreveninducedintoahypnoticstateagainstyourwill.Peopleinhypnosisarenot“asleep”.Onthecontrary,theyareoftenmoreawarethanusualofwhatistakingplaceandtheirsensesfunctionfarmoreefficientlythannormal.Peoplecannotbemadetodoanythingthattheydonotwanttodo,andtheywillonlyacceptsuggestionsthatconformtotheirownattitudesandbeliefs.Thestateofhypnosis,whichisatotallynaturalphenomenon,isastatethatwegointonaturallyupto120timesaday.

ExplanationofHypnosis

It’simportanttorememberthatallhypnosisisself-hypnosisandasahypnotherapistyouaremerelyafacilitatortohelpyourclientintoself-hypnosis.

Itisanaturalstatewegointoashumanbeingsupto120timesaday.Itformspartofthesleepcycle,wegointohypnosiseverynightbeforewegotosleep,andagaineverymorningbeforewebecomefullyawake.

Driving:Youmayhaveexperiencedthiswhenyouaredrivingonalongroute,oronafamiliarrouteyoutakeeveryday.Suddenlyyouthinktoyourself,"Ican'trememberpassingacertainbridge,"or"Idon'tremembergoingthroughthosetrafficlights”.

Readingabook

Whenyoureadfictionoranovel,youloseallawarenessofthepeopleand

theroomaroundyou.Youbecomesoengrossedthatyouare“inthere”withthepeopleinthestory.Watchingtelevision

Youmayhavebeenlookingatthetelevisionscreenforthepast20minutes,yetyouhavenoideaofwhatwasgoingon.Yourmindhasdriftedawaytosomewhereelse.Allofasuddenyouthink“Imissedthatbit",yetallthetimeyouwereactuallylookingatthescreen.

Whocan’tbehypnotised?

•Childrenunderfivebecausetheydon’tunderstandthelanguagethatyouareusing.

•Peoplewithseriousmentalhealthissues.

•Peoplewhosimplydon’twanttobe.

Thisisthelittlevoiceinsideyourhead,theonethatrightnowissaying"Ohyes,thatlittlevoice".Itisthepartyouusetothinkwith,alldaylong.Itisverylimitedasitcanonlyholdalimitednumberofthoughtsorideasatanyonetime.Thisiswhy,forexample,manypeoplecanonlymemorisenumbersinsmallchunks.1943609315iseasiertorememberas194(firstchunk),360(secondchunk)and9315(thirdchunk).Onaveragetheconsciousmindcanretainonlybetweenfiveandnineunitsofinformationatanyonetime.The

TheConsciousMind:

Theconsciousmindislikeawatchmanandthesubconsciousmindislikeastoreroom.Thewatchmanhasnointelligenceonhisown.Hebehavesontheinformationinthestore.

Supposeyoutellyourself“youaregoodatstudy”.Andthestorehasstoredotherpeople’scommentssuchas“youarestupid,youcannotsucceed”.Thewatchmanseesyoursentencesandcomparesitwiththeknowledgeinitsstoreandsays,“Thisinformationiswrong”.Thewatchmanthrowsthisnewinformationaway.Hedoesnotputthenewpositiveinformationinthestore.Thisisthefundamentaldifficultyinchangingbeliefsandbehaviourofaperson.

TheSubconsciousMind:

Thesubconsciousmindisthepartofyourmindthatisresponsibleforkeepingeverythingwithinyourbodyincontrol.Whetheryouareconsciouswideawakeorevensleeping,yoursubconsciousmindisalwaysworking,seeingtoityou’reyourheartisalwaysbeating,thatyourlungsareworkingproperlyandbreathing.Itisthepartofyourmindthatmakessurethatbloodispumpingtoyourentiresystem.Itisevenresponsibleforthegrowthofyourfingernails.Everyfunctionofyourbodyiscontrolledbyyoursubconsciousmind.

Oursubconsciousmindtakeseverythingthatissaidliterally.

Thesubconsciousmind:

• Cannotanalyseandcriticise• Takeseverypieceofinformationliterallyfromtheconsciousmind• Cannotdistinguishbetweenwhatisrealandwhatispretend• Doesnothaveasenseofhumour• Doesnotunderstandsarcasmornegative• Itslanguageistheimagination• Itistheretoprotecttheowner• Itwillrunallprogrammesitconsidersprotective• Itneverforgets

Asallourpresenthabits,mannerisms,andthoughtpatternsaretheresultofpastsubconscious‘programming’fromparents,teachers,

peers,co-workers,television,avarietyofsources.Thisprogrammingcaneitherpropelusintosuccess,orkeepusfromit,despiteourbestefforts.

Logicworkswiththeconsciousmind,butoftennotwiththesubconscious.Hypnosishelpsthesubconscious.

Whilstapersonisinhypnosis,thehypnotherapistcancommunicatedirectlywiththesubconsciouspartofhisorhermind.Sincethesubconsciousminddoesnotanalysenorcriticiseanythingthatissaidtoit,itwillacceptasliteralalmostanythingthatissaidandwilldothisautomaticallywithoutthepersonevenknowing.

Agoodexampleoftheconsciousandsubconsciousmindisasfollows.Whenyouarelearningtodosomething,forexampledriveacar,youareusingyourconsciousmind.Youmaythink"I'llneverrememberallthis",butonceyouhavetakenyourexaminationorpassedyourdrivingtest,thenallofasuddenthingsseemtocomemoreeasily.Youseemtogoonto"autopilot".Well,thisisbecausealltheinformationhasbeenpassedontothesubconsciousmind,sothatyounolongerhavetothinkaboutwhatyouaredoing.

Rememberhowdifficultitwaswhenyouwerelearningtodrive,andcomparethiswithhoweasyitisnow.

Howdoeshypnosiswork?

WhyDoesHypnosisWork?

Theanswerinonewordissuggestion.

Hypnosisworksonthepowerofsuggestion.

Asababy,wearebornacompletelyblankcanvaswithnofearsorhangups.Butaswegrowupandwebecomeinfluencedbyourparents,teachersandpeers,wearebombardedwithsuggestionsastohowlifeshouldbe.Wetakeonboardthesesuggestionsandmakethemourreality.

Howmanytimesinlifehaveyounotdonesomething,becausesomeonesuggestedtoyouthatitwouldbeabadidea?Thatpersonhasalteredandinfluencedyourlifepath.

Peoplerepresenttheworldinternallytocreatetheirownpersonalandsubjectiverealities.Werespondmainlytoourinternalexperience(mapofreality),nottotheexternalrealityitself.Howwerepresentthingsinourmindareourinterpretations.Interpretationsmayormaynotbeaccurate.Inanycase,theseinterpretationsdeterminehowweexperienceeachmoment,andthereforelaythefoundationforourexperienceofrealityinthefuturetoo.

Havingchoicesabouthowtointerpretyourrealitynow,changesyourexperienceofit.Andhavingmorechoicesavailabletoyoubeginsbychoosingtointerpreteachexperienceinawaythatfreesyourthinkingtoexploredifferentpointsofview.So,howelsecanyoulookatyoursituation,andhowelse,andhowelse?...Inthisway,yourmapofrealityexpands.

2.Peoplemakethebestchoiceavailabletothem

Apersonalwaysmakesthebestchoicetheycan,giventheirmapofrealityatthetime.Thechoicemaybeself-defeating,bizarreorevil,butforthem,itseemsthebestwayforward.Givethemabetterchoiceintheirmapofrealityandtheywilltakeit.Evenbetter–helpthemupgradetheirmaptoonewithmorechoicesinit.

Anotherwayofputtingthisis:Weallactaccordingtothelevelofawarenessthat’savailabletousinthatmoment.Thereasonwhypeopleregretcertainpastactionsisbecausetheyhavegreaterawarenessnow,andbecauseofthisphenomenon,theyeventuallyovercometheircurrentregrettoo.

Basedonthepremiseofthispresupposition,whoevercauseduspaininthepast,didsobasedontheirlevelofawarenessatthattime.Theyweretryingtofulfilacertainvalueintheiroldmapofrealityandneverknewhowelsetogoaboutitbackthen.Lookingbackonthatpasthurtfromabroaderand

3.Allbehaviourhasstructure

Peoplefunctionperfectlyevenifwhattheyaredoingisruiningtheirlife.Allbehaviourhasastructure.Whenyouunderstandthestructure,youcanchangethebehaviourintosomethingmoredesirable.Peoplecarryouttheirbehaviouralstrategiesperfectly,butthestrategiesmaybepoorlydesignedandineffective.Findingouthowyouorothersdowhatyouortheydo,enablesyouorthemtochangetheineffectivestrategytoonethatismoresuitedtoachievingusefulanddesirableresults.

4.Allactionshaveapositiveintent

Ouractionsarenotrandom;wearealwaystryingtoachievesomething,althoughwemaynotbeawareofwhatthatis.Behindeachbehaviourthereisapositiveintention.Thismaybetheanticipationofpleasureoravoidanceofpain.Peoplewanttoachievesomethingthattheyvalueandwhichbenefitsthem.

Apersonisnottheirbehaviour.Whenapersonhasabetterchoiceof

behaviourthatalsoachievestheirpositiveintention,theywilltakeit.Whenthebehaviourisundesired,findalternatewaystoachievethebehaviour’spositiveintent.Seektoaddchoicesandresources.Whenyoutakeawaychoices,othercompensatingbehaviourscanoccur.Internalconflicts,indecision,procrastinationandlackofmotivationareoftentheresultofconflictingvaluesinourunconsciousawareness.Establishingthehighestintentionorpurposeofeachconflictingvalueenablesintegrationandinneralignmentwhichresultsingreaterchoiceandfreedom.Tochangeunwantedbehaviours,startbyelicitingthehighestpositiveintentionwhichdrivesthatbehaviour,thenseektosatisfythatintentionthroughmoreappropriatemeans.

Inordertobemoreunderstandingandcompassionatetowardsothers,seektoestablishwhattheirhighestpositiveintentionsare.

5.Youcannotnotcommunicate

Resistanceinothersindicatesalackofrapport,orthattheotherpersondoesn’tgetyourmeaning.Weallresistwhenwedon’tunderstand.Yourintendedcommunicationisnotalwayswhatisperceived.

Youcannotnotcommunicate.Wearealwayscommunicatingeitherverballyornon-verbally.Eventheabsenceofaresponseisinformation.Eachpersondeletes,distortsandgeneralisespuresensoryinformation(inputthroughthesenses).Ournervoussystemisconditionedtofilterinformationinthisway.

Thesefiltersaretriggeredbybothverbalandnon-verbalbehavioursinothers.

Whichismoreimportant:Whatyouintendtocommunicate,orwhatyouactuallycommunicate?Flexiblecommunicatorschangewhatthey’resaying(andhowthey’resayingit,aswellastheirbodylanguage)untiltheirdesiredresultsareobtained.

6.Weallhavetheresourcesweneed

Everythingapersonneedstoeffectapositivechangeisalreadyinthem.Theymay,however,notbeconsciouslyawareofit.Oftenpeoplehaveresourcesthattheyhaven’tconsideredorareavailableinothercontexts.Resourcesmeantheinternalresponsesandexternalbehavioursneededtogetdesiredresults.Ourmostbasicresourceisourabilitytolearn.

Therearenoun-resourcefulpeople,onlyun-resourcefulstatesofmind.Asresponse-ablepeople,wecanrunourownmindandthereforemovetowardgettingtheresultsthatwewant.Thekeytoachievingthisisthroughknowinghowtochangeyourstate,asspecificresourcesareaccessedonlythroughbeingintheappropriatestate.Statesarethekeysthateitheropenorlockthedoortotheinfinitereservoirofresourcesinsideyou.

Appropriatestatesarethosethatmatchthekindofresourcesthatyouwouldliketogainaccessto.Forexample,tobeinaconfidentstateshiftyourbodyposture,breathandinternaldialoguetothatwhichmatchesconfidence.Youwillimmediatelybegintofeelmoreconfident.

Intheabovewayyoucan,throughchangingyoubodyposture,breathandinternaldialogue,assumeanystate.Throughassumingappropriatestates,yourthinkingbecomesclear,newcreativechoicesariseintoawareness,andempoweredactionsaretheresult.

Conversely,we’veallhadtheexperienceofbeinginamiserablestate,andyouknowhowresourcefulyoufeltthen!

Thehypnoticstateishighlyversatilestate,sinceit’softenreferredtoasthe“masterkey”toyourinnerresources.Hypnosisenablespeopletohavedirectcontactwiththeleveloftheirawarenessthat’susuallyunconscious.

Hypnotherapyusesthehypnoticstateforthepurposeofhealing.So,whicheverwayyouchoosetogoaboutit,statesarethewayinwhichyoutapyourinnerwisdomandproductivelevelsofthoughttodealeffectivelywithanysituation.

7.Mindandbodyarethesamesystem

It’sclearhowthemind-and-bodyaffecteachother:Prolongedstressorheavyemotionalspellsoftenresultinphysicalsickness.Likewise,positiveattitudes,joyandlaughterarenotonlyhealingforthebody,butalsohelppreventsickness.

Sincephysiologicalcuesreflectthefunctioningofyourmind,bychangingphysiologicalcuesyoucanaffectthefunctioningofyourmind.Forexample,slumpinginyourchaircanmakeyoufeeltired,ortakingawalkcanupliftyourthoughts.

Mindandbodyinteractandmutuallyinfluenceeachother.Itisnotpossibletomakeachangeinonewithouttheotherbeingaffected.Whenwethinkdifferently,ourbodieschange.Whenweactdifferentlywechangeourthoughtsandfeelings.

Treatingonlymental/emotionalorphysicalsymptomswithouttakingresponsibilityfortheunderlyingreasonswhysuchsymptomshavemanifested,maydisruptthemind/bodysystem.Ignoringthesubtlecausesofunwantedsymptomscanresultinmorecomplexcomplicationslater.

Forexample,regularlytakingsleepingtabletstogetenoughsleepatnight,withoutaddressingthemental/emotionalcauses(likestressordissatisfaction)ofnotbeingabletosleep,mayleadtoburnoutand/ordisease.

Consciousnessexpressesitselfthroughthesystemofyourmindandbody.Mindandbodyarethereforeintimatelylinked,andultimately,they’retwoaspectsofthesamesource.Anyhealingprogrammustaimtooptimisetheflowandbalanceofconsciousnessinboththemindandbodyinorderforhealingtobeeffectiveandcomplete.

8.Thereisnosuchthingasfailure,thereisonlyfeedback

LegendhasitthatpriortoThomasEdisoninventingthelightbulb,hewasinterrogatedbyaprobingjournalistwhodemandedtoknowwhyEdisonhadfailedsomethinglike200timestoinventthelightbulbthatEdisonclaimedwasanimminentreality.Edisonsreplywentalongthelinesthathehadn’tfailedtoinventthelightbulb200times,instead,he’ddiscovered200waysnottoinventit.

Withthatkindofattitude,Edisonwasquitelikelyabletomaintainaresourcefulstateandbepositivelymotivatedtopersevereuntilhisgoalwasreached.

Theattitudethatwebringtoasituationdeterminesourresponsetothatsituation.

Everyresultgivesyoufeedback,maybeinformationabouthowtodo

somethingdifferentlynexttime.Feedbackishelpfulandsetsdirection.Thiskindofattitudetoward“failure”producesresultsthatallowyoutoimprove.Resultsarethemeansbywhichyoumeasureyourprogressandadjustyourbehaviourinordertoachieveyourdesiredoutcomes.

Everyexperienceoffersapositivelearning,onefromwhichwecangrowintellectuallyorintermsofemotionalintelligence.Livingislearning,evenifyouloose,youdon’tloosethelearning.

9.Ifonepersoncandosomething,anyonecanlearntodoit

Nomatterhowyoudefinesuccess,manysuccessfulpeoplehavegottowheretheyarethroughmodellingthesuccessfulperformanceofothers.Modellingisnotcopying.Copyinghowsomeonebecamesuccessfulinthe80sisunlikely

Ifit’spossibleforsomeoneelse,it’spossibleforyou,andteachabletoothers(providedtheydon’thaveseverephysiologicalorneurologicaldamage).Inthiswaymostpeoplecanlearntogetbetterresultsintheirownway,youdonotbecomeacloneofthemodel–youlearnfromthem.

Findamodelofexcellenceinafieldthatyou’reinterestedin.Identifythesequenceofcomponents(thoughts,beliefs,valuesandbehaviours)thatarenecessarytoachievethedesiredresult.Applythatmodelinawaythatenablesyoutogetthesamekindsofresults,andsuccessisyours.

10.Ifyouwanttounderstand-Act

Reallearningisinthedoing.Throughapplicationyouwillsoondiscoverwhatworksandwhatdoesn’twork.Keepdoing(andrefining)thethingsthatgetyoutheresultsthatyouwant.Remember,thereisnofailure,onlyfeedback.

Salesmenuserapportbuildingtechniquesallthetime.Inordertoturnapotentialcustomerintoanactualcustomertheyneedtohavesomekindofrapportwiththeirclient.Youcouldhavetheworld’sbestproduct,butifthecustomerdoesnotlikeyou,itisunlikelythathewillbuyfromyou.Ontheotherhand,youcouldbesellingtheworld’sworstproduct,andifyourcustomerisinrapportwithyou,hewilllikeyousomuchthathefindsithardtosay“no”.

Rapport,eitheronaconsciousorunconsciouslevel,isthemainingredientofallcommunicationandchange.Itsdefinitionisafeelingofoneness,harmonyandagreement.Toestablishrapportwithanotherindividualwemustpayattentiontotheirbodylanguage,bothnon-verbalandverballanguage.Oncewehaveelicitedtheseareas,ourtaskistomatch,mirror,crossmirrorandpacethatindividual.

Eyecontact

Appropriateeyecontactisusuallythemostimportantwayofcommunicatingone'sfullandundividedattention.Itcaneasilybeachievedbydoingthefollowing.

1.Focusyoureyesontheotherpersonandgentlyshiftyourgazefromhisorherfacetoanotherpartofthebody,suchasagesturinghandoratappingfoot,thenbacktothefaceandtotheeyes.Occasionallymovingyourgazeawayfromthepersonwillreducethechanceofstaringorofcausinghimorhertofeelanxietyorsuspicion.Letyourselfbenatural.

2.Avoidstaringatthepersonorfeigningeyecontactbyfixingyoureyesontheperson’sforehead.Thesebehaviourscanbemistakenfordoubt,hostilityorinsincerity.

3.Avoidlookingawayfromyourclientforlongperiods.Ifyouaredistracted

byturningyourgazetoothersastheywalkby,orbynoisesintheenvironment,theotherpersonmayinterpretthisaslackofinterest.

3.Leanslightlyforward.Thiscommunicatesinterest.BreathingMatchtheclientsrateofbreathingwithyourownbreathingrate.RepetitivePhrasingHearandutilisetherepeatedphrasesoftheotherperson.

Matching

Matchingistheprocesswherebyyouadjustthesameaspectsofyourownexternalbehaviourtoapproximatethosesameaspectsoftheotherperson’sexternalbehaviour.TheongoingprocessofmatchingisreferredtoasPACING.Masteringtheartofmatchingwillgiveyoutheability,andchoices,toestablishrapportwithanyoneyouchoose.Agoodwayto“match”peopleinitiallyistheuseofbodylanguage.Thisinvolvesmatchingtheclient’sbodyposture.It’sa
