Modular Controller Series
Introduction –CSPID2, CSTC8, CSINI/CSINV
CSPID2
Dual PID Module
CSPID2 FeaturesDual PID controller
– Two independent PID loops– Universal inputs
• Thermocouples, RTDs, 0-10 VDC or0(4)-20 mA
• Jumper selectable
– Four discrete outputs• Independently assignable to either loop• Output models available
– Form A relays (3 Amp AC)– NFET (1 Amp DC sink)– Triac – 0.5 Amp AC
CSPID2 Features, cont’d.
Optional heater current monitors (100mA AC)– One input for each control loop– Detects failing heaters and failed output
circuits
CSPID2 Benefits
Saves cabinet space32 zones, one comms drop (node)
– Higher data throughput
Costs less per zone than many 1/16 DIN controllers!!
Why not perform PID in the PLC? – Review
Some PLCs are limited in the number of loops that they can provide– Mitsubishi limited to 12 loops
Numerous loops slow the PLC down During commissioning and repair, the PLC
may be stopped/off– Many processes can’t easily be stopped once started
Some PLCs make PID cost prohibitive Some can’t provide accurate control
Target Markets Plastics
– Extrusion, injection, blow-molding, thermoforming…
Food– Curing, smoking, cooking…
Packaging– Shrink wrap labels, bag sealing…
Metals– Vacuum furnaces, heat-treating…
Focus Market
Extrusion– Majority of CSPID1 sales have been into the
extrusion market– Many DLCs also sold into extrusion– The CSPID2 will make RLC even more
successful in this important market
Why the Success?
Extrusion requirements– What do extruders need/have in common??
• Numerous loops of PID control– Panel cut-outs are a nuisance/cost
– Adjustment of setpoint on multiple controllers is time consuming
• Almost always have an HMI– Why have redundant displays for temperature?
• Contain a PLC– In many applications, the PLC isn’t aware of the loop
controllers, meaning the machine isn’t fully automated
Modular Controller Offers… Lower TCO – Total Cost of Ownership
– Faster configuration versus discrete controllers• Saves labor $$
– Easier information integration versus discrete controllers• Saves hardware $$ and labor $$
– More uptime with hot-swap• Makes more $$!
The Modular Controller is now able to compete with 1/16 DIN controller pricing!– But don’t be tempted to discount it to that level!
• What 1/16 DIN controller can be integrated so easily?• What 1/16 DIN controller has Ethernet, hot-swap, etc?!?

System Per Loop Costs - DIN Rail Solutions
16 Zones
32 Zones
MLC9000 Comparison
Their 4-loop module seems to be price competitive, except…– The 4-loop module has only 6 outputs
• Can perform heat/cool on only 3 loops!
• Their 16 zone system jumps…$182/loop to $263/loop!
• Their 32 zone system jumps…from $173/loop to $243/loop!
• Ours remains at $184 and $174 respectively
Modular Controller Is…
A highly differentiated product– No other product offers the customer so
many benefits• Make sure you sell it based on its value
– The benefits are easy to communicate• This will be an easier sell than most
CSTC8, CSINI, CSINV
Data Acquisition Modules
CSTC/INI/INV Features
High-density input modules– 8 input channels per module
• CSTC8 – Thermocouple input
• CSINI8 – 0/4-20 mA input
• CSINV8 – +/- 10 Volt input
Each input independently scalable400 mSec scan
– Channels may be disabled to improve performance (50 mSec/channel)
CSTC/INI/INV Benefits
Saves cabinet space128 inputs, one comms drop (node)
– Higher data throughput
Low cost/point for data acquisition applications
