Modesto, USA Is all about You!
august 2011
Modesto USA is A Classic American City. No other city has a brand that fits so all-around perfectly. Why? Because we are that small town feeling of community, friends and neighbors wrapped with the amazing American Graffiti history and legends blended with the arts, entertainment, dining and culture of great American cities.
The reason we are so special is our people. Anyone that has called Modesto home has created our legends. Some have gone off and become massively famous, some stay here in Modesto and make a huge public difference and most work hard day after day to make contributions that go unnoticed, but are as equally important as all of the well-
known things. It all goes hand in hand and every person in our amazing city makes a difference. This month we turn the pages of ModestoView over to you, the people of Modesto. What do we like? What do we want to do differently? The people that create our music, roads, restaurants, schools, families, businesses and events are the stars of Modesto.
Modesto USA is lucky to have so many stars that shine so bright and in so many ways and it all connects together in what we call Modesto Ana. Thanks to each and every one of you and enjoy Modesto, USA- A Classic American City.

Greetings Modesto Fans:What a fun, fast and furious summer
we have had. It seems like our kids just got out of school and now it is time to go back. Summer sports camps, summer water polo and a couple of weekend va-cations and it is all over. It hardly seems that this is our 7th issue since we re-start-ed ModestoView Magazine. I hope ev-ery single person that has advertised and picked up and read ModestoView has been excited to see what our community has to offer. You see the most interesting and 100% positive info in ModestoView. Thanks to all of you and the people that dedicated their time creating the articles and information that fills our pages each month. It is working.
There are some important things happening in Modesto as we work hard everyday to revitalize, and energize our community with awareness and positive information. We need people to redis-cover Downtown Modesto. There are so many changes from the Historic Graf-fiti Cruise Route that's in development, the new Downtown Restaurant Week, Aug 11-18 and the new GoDowntown-Modesto.com program in conjunction with the City of Modesto, Chamber, DID, CVB and the Brenden Cinemas to encourage families, teens, businesses people rediscover the excitement and convenience of shopping, entertainment and the dining in downtown. There are new friendly bicycle police patrols, the weekend barricades are down on J St and there is a great connection with the city and the businesses to keep downtown vibrant. We like this because a healthy downtown makes the entire city healthi-er- N, S, E & W. Do explore today.
Of course, ModestoView is made possible thanks to our advertisers. Our advertisers are changing Modesto for the better and created more business for themselves with every issue. Contact Greg and Kyle today at advertising or call this very second 209-380-0310
Thank you for reading and enjoying ModestoView.
As always, your comments and ideas are always welcome so we can make it better.Have a great Modesto USA August.

The Night in the Bowl fund raiser was an amazing success. 14 local restaurants were on hand to sample their amazing tasty treats and 4 wineries were on hand to tease guest with a variety of local flavors, all to benefit the Modesto Band of Stan-islaus County ( MoBand) and the Modesto Parks and Rec Department that helps present MoBand each year. This 1st annual event was fun for every one as they were amazing by local tastes and entertained by Ernie Bucio, The Gottschalks House Band and Third Party playing in the night. We are already looking forward to next years’ MoBand season and the 2nd Annual Night at the Bowl.

Okay, this was the shortest sum-mer ever. It seems like we just got out of school. With all of the sum-mer reading and the water polo and a few weekends in the mountains and a quick trip to Disneyland, we are back in school. August 10th! Really? Oh well, one thing I can tell you is that there is no reason to be bored here in Modesto. We have been really enjoy-ing the movies at Brenden and had a blast at the Harry Potter premier. MoBand Thursdays are such a high-light. I had the amazing opportunity to attend Peace Camp and that has open up so many opportunities with the Modesto Peace Life Center. They are having a very important 10 Days in September event that you will real-ly find interesting for the 10 days fol-lowing the 10th Anniversary of 9-11.
It is fun to have the Queen Bean and the yogurt and ice cream places to hang out at. I really like places that do live music that are all ages. I haven’t been to the metal shows at Melody Ballroom, but they are an option and the food is good at King Kabob. Jax on H is all ages for the Blue Monday and the Open Mic events that are crazy. The Off the Air shows at Deva are something ev-eryone can enjoy and there are two in August on the 13th and the 26th. Queen Bean has a great patio and coffee drinks and light food. Always a winner.

bookviewIf you love read-
ing then and now books as much as I do, then you will love the new Modesto book by Wayne Mathes of the McHenry Museum. It is a fascinating look at key locations in Modesto with a be-fore and after point of view. As we work with the City of Modesto to cre-ate the Modesto USA Historic Cruise Route, we have been working with the McHenry Museum to find vintage pic-tures of 10th and 11th Street . You can spend hours looking through the files of history at the McHenry Museum, but this book makes it easy to get ex-cited about Modesto history. It really makes you think about how we have to preserve and celebrate any vintage history and architecture we can here in Modesto. You can buy this at most na-tional retailers, but go to the McHenry Museum and buy your 96 page copy there. Released July 2011 on Arcadia Publishing.

The Ashak’s moved here from Chi-cago where other culinary wonders are abundant and very welcome here. The Ashak’s bring with them their Mediter-ranean, traditional Italian, and Chicago style experience. The Ashak’s have May’s close family ties here and a 5 year old son, reason enough to relocate their lives to Modesto. Ray has plenty of restaurant history from working with his father, uncle, and brother through-out Chicago’s restaurants and night-clubs, including Lil’ Italy.
Vito’s lead chef, Ricardo Alvarado, at the exciting age of 22, has worked at Vito’s for the past 2 1/2 years. He attended the CA Culinary Academy in San Francisco. Chef Ricardo received his inspiration from his Great Aunt Aleja from Mexico as a young boy. She made a memorable dish with beef and a dried chili sauce that he still tries to recreate as she sadly passed away without knowing her recipe. His first hands-on kitchen experience happened when Chef Ricardo wanted to get out of helping his Dad working on a car, he asked his Mom to tell him he was busy helping her in the kitchen. So his hon-est Mom put him to work in the kitchen and he ended up really getting into it!
Chef Ricardo was born in Mexico, lived in LA until he was 7, in Modesto for the past 15 years, and graduated from Davis High. He likes to go to punk and ska concerts (he wants to go check-out The Fat Cat), shopping in the mall, and reading chef biographies. He loves his Mom’s boiled bean recipe, black cherry soda, and Sierra Nevada beer. Ray, owner/general manager told me he is very impressed not only with Chef Ricardo’s culinary talents, but with his loyalty to Vito’s.
Vito’s has an upscale flare with a presence of family fare. Vito’s has a full bar, features a lunch, dinner, wine, and dessert menu with numerous selections to choose from. I dined on asparagus stuffed chicken breast with a rich and creamy basil sauce, brown rice, and sautéed veggies, it was fabulous! The
chocolate fondant cake was nothing short of Dana-licious!!! Please know Vito’s also has gluten free entrees upon request. I’m thrilled to report Vito’s will be participating on August 11-17th for the downtown dining event featuring signature specials, bigger portions, and lower prices! Vito’s is another generous supporter of local charities and fund raisers in our Modesto community as well. Vito’s is a must on Dana’s Des-tination list!
Chef Ricardo, Beatles or Stones… Stones cause they are “grimy!” Really? Excellent answer, but for all the wrong reasons! I screamed in my head! To be 22 again!
See vitosmodesto.com for live band entertainment, special wine dinners, and future scheduled events.
Wednesdays get all you can eat pas-ta and addicting bread for just $9.95. Tues- Wed- Thurs 1/2 off selected wines (Rombauer Cab for only $27!) Happy Hour: 4-7pm with select $5 ap-petizers $3 drafts, $5 Martinis, & $5 well drinks Now that’s something to get happy about!!! 10% discounts with same day Gallo Center or State Theater ticket stubs 10% for Stanislaus County employees with ID card.
Modesto’s Hidden dining Gem!
Right there on 13th Street in downtown Modesto between I & J Streets you will find Vito’s, a hidden dining gem! for the past 14 months it has been under new ownership under the guidance of May and ray ashak. the couple is very grateful to the previous owner Mr. lazar Piro for the incredible opportunity to continue the success he built with Vito’s.!

If a high quality latte is on your mind, then do not delay to get those sav-age urges fulfilled with hand pulled and thoughtfully prepared espresso drinks, lattes and more. There is no more tell-ing mark of quality when your drink is served with the lid off. Why? Amazing,
finely steamed milk foam is a badge of honor. Sloppy foam and steamed milk is a tell tale sign that your barista might not love coffee as much you do. Here are some locally owned places that will satisfy your cravings and tease your taste buds.

Sitting on the back patio, reminisc-ing times with friends and family rarely turns into a major event. For Jim Brunk, that’s exactly what happened. Jim’s wife Heidi tragically passed away dur-ing a summer gathering of friends and family at their ranch in Oakdale. Every-one that knew her loved her and those that would gather after her passing would discuss different ways of honor-ing and celebrating a life well lived that certainly touched all that knew her.
Heidi’s love of music was apparent. She was a member of the local band Remedy, as well as a trio called the Songbirds. Her voice was angelic and her personality was equal to her voice. What better way to honor her memory than to create a music festival and use the proceeds for music and arts scholar-ships for local youths.
The Heidi Brunk Foundation was created and from that came the Sierra View Music Festival. Thousands have attended the event over the past few years and each year the event grows. The entire event is produced by volun-teers in the community and the com-mittee of the Heidi Brunk Foundation. A major effort from local people that have a love of their community and a strong bond amongst friends.
This year, Sierra View Music Festi-val features Eddie Money with special guests Montrose and Pat Travers. Also, local favorites Remedy, The Moon-shine Bandits and Soul Heart. The mu-sic starts at 1:30 pm. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the gate. Tickets are available locally in Oakdale at Oakie’s Board Shop, Most Wanted Winery and RT Power equipment. You can also purchase tickets in Modesto at Skip’s Music or you can buy them online at TicketWeb.com.
If you are unable to attend the Sierra View Music Festival, but you would like to donate to the Heidi Brunk Foun-dation and support local music and arts students, you may contact them at (209) 681-7530.

As I am a creature of habit, I never saw any reason to venture in. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Fuzio, which is Italian for ‘fusion’, is locally owned and oper-ated, manager Thomas Lopes informed me, and is not simply an Italian restau-rant, but a fusion restaurant with a wide array of dishes which are prepared in their open red-tiled kitchen. And my ridiculous concern about the preten-tiousness? That flew out the door when I finally went inside.
Please meet Miss Jessica Hailey, bartender extraordinary who is cute as hell and overflowing with compliments about Fuzio. Jessica has been with Fuz-iosince they opened in December of ’01 starting off as a server and then got be-hind Fuzio’s painting-decked bar where she belongs. “My kids and Fuzio are my important things.” A fellow employee told me that she is making up drinks all the time, to which Jessica added, “I love making drinks, inventing them and
watching people enjoy them. People ask what my special is, but I can’t just make you any drink! I have to get to know you so I can make you something perfect.” Example? The Fuzio Cucum-ber Martini. “One of our regulars, Joe, really loved cucumbers but doesn’t like too-sweet of a drink. It’s perfect for this time of year; it’s summer refreshing.” It should be also noted that Jessica, a fel-low gin lover like myself, pours a really lovely gin martini.
Two martinis in, I informed Jes-sica about my previous misconception about Fuzio. She added: “So many people walk by here and think it might be too fancy. You can dress up or down here, from a prom dress to a sundress. When people do come here, we always see them come back again. We take the ordinary and make it dynamic.”
Sometimes its good to be wrongOh right. Nearly forgot to tell you
Fuzio does this really fun deal where
you can electronically check in on their Facebook page for monthly check-in-specials. This month is currently rock-ing a free pair of X-Fest tickets with a $50 dollar order! Be sure to visit their page to see what is going to be featured next month (it’s sure to be fantastic). And if you present a movie/theatre ticket at Fuzio (from that day natural-ly), you can receive a discount on your overall bill. “We are trying to encourage dinner and movie pairings and support the local scene,” says Thomas Lopes.
i have walked past fuzio universal bistro a number of times, however i have never, until today, been inside. why? i had always assumed it was a) a chain, b) an italian restaurant, and C) probably pretentious.

The number of people that have cel-lars or wine refrigerators in their house is steadily increasing and I get asked quite frequently about proper wine stor-age and the ageability of wine. The age ability of wine distinguishes it from most other consumable goods. While it is perishable, wine has the ability to change and potentially improve in quality. The ability of a wine to age is influenced by many factors including storage conditions, grape variety, vin-tage, winemaking style and even bottle size. The larger format bottles age more slowly.
The storage conditions of the bottled wine will effect how the wine ages. Heat, widely fluctuating temperatures, direct sunlight and vibrations are wine’s top four enemies. The lower the tem-perature, the more slowly the wine will develop or age. Most experts recom-mend a constant temperature between 55-69 degrees Fahrenheit with 55 being ideal. Additionally, wine bottles should
be stored on their sides so that wine is in contact with the cork. This prevents the cork from drying out or cracking which could allow air in to the bottle.
Scientifically, the ratio of sugars, ac-ids and phenolics (tannins) to water is a key determination of how well a wine can age. Grape varieties with thicker skins, from a dry growing season or where techniques were used to keep yields low will have less water and a higher ratio of sugars, acid and pheno-lics. Additionally, every wine has a de-velopment profile; each varietal is dis-tinct. Most whites are better consumed in their first few years but many Old World whites like German Rieslings and French Sauternes will show better decades later. Most reds will be fine 4-6 years from bottling but they will differ in their ageability. Zinfandels, for ex-ample, do not develop in the way that Cabernet Sauvignons do and are best enjoyed within the first 2-6 years while many Cabernets will show well 15-20
years from vintage. Young cabernets exhibit deep, rich fruit flavors and of-ten hard tannins. The aging process can be compared to fresh versus cooked sauces. In the case of fresh sauces, the components retain their separate identi-ties. Cooking blends the distinct flavors together and after time, typically around ten years in the case of top grade Caber-nets, the fresh aspects begin to develop or meld into one. Most Merlots and New World Pinot Noirs should probably be consumed in the first 4-6 years. Many
Syrah will last 8-10 years. However, it should be noted that these are general-izations. You might open a fifteen year old Merlot and be amazed. Which brings us to probably the most important fac-tor; individual taste. As each varietal is distinct and different, so are individual tastes, the key is to learn what you like; young or old, and to drink your wines when you will enjoy them most. It is al-ways better to drink a wine a little too early than too late. The Vintage Cellar, [email protected].
wine storaGe and aGinGI’ve read that most wine purchased in the United States is consumed weeks or days, if not hours, from the time of purchase. while i believe this, i know that it holds less true today than it did years ago.

Mandy walshI grew up in a similar size town in Tx - Beaumont - which is on the humid,
hurricane-struck coast of East Texas so what I LOVE IS THE WEATHER! Modesto actually has seasons and wonderful temperatures. I love the friendly people and family values of Modesto. I rarely go anywhere inModesto where I don't see someone I know and all the regular stores and restaurants that I visit know me and provide great customer service. Modesto is "All American", because we have awesome outdoor events like concert in the park, downtown art walks and festivals and parades but the Gallo Center for the Arts has really provided a venue and gatheringplace to celebrate the arts and inspire our kids - I'm so grateful!
We need jobs and education! This city cannot reach its full potential until we can provide opportunities for young people to return here and find a careerlo-cally. Additionally, we have to offer jobs that provide security and chances for advancement for all young people - college bound or not! We need industry and business to want to locate here and hire our citizens. We have amazing farmland in the valley that needs to be protected, but we also have many hard working people who just need a chance to have a good job and provide for their families!
I think it would also be wonderful if Modesto could overhaul the parks and bike trails. There is so many beautiful spots in this town that need attention and care. I want our city to be attractive, landscaped, pedestrian and bike friendly! We should feel safe and proud in our parks and in downtown. Modestans need to take pride in their city.
interview Modesto is YouThere is no more important voice in Modesto than that people that live here and make things happen. our people make Modesto, USA a Classic American City. our people deliver the way of life we call ModestoCana. our people own our local restaurants, create our local music, start our businesses, create our art and culture and give back in ways that very few communities can boast. Part of celebrating is growing and evolving. we can do better and there are a million awesome ideas out there to make Modesto even better. So we asked a wide range of people two questions and asked them for a Twitter length response. 1) what do you love about Modesto and what makes us “A Classic American City” and 2) what can we do to make Modesto even better. do you have a story to tell? email us at [email protected] and we will post your story on www.modestoview.com

Modesto is that history still can be made here andthere are still unwritten chap-ters that will be written by our children & grandchildren. Modesto has a bright future. Modesto's like Coca-Cola "the real American classic"
The way we make Modesto better is do what we've done best, see a problem fix it. Believe the unbelievable and nev-er say it can't be done, created, changed or done better.
dave LopezIt is the people that I love. From
the man who offered me mustard for my hot dog at concert in the park, to Mitch, at Tresetti's, who remembers everybody's name, to the woman at the supermarket who patiently waits while my wife processes her coupons. This community has been celebrating fourth of July for 137 years together. We stick together and we stick to it. And let's not forget American graffiti the only place in the world that truly knows how to show off car history. Let'sjust call that "Modestocana". For me and my family we will always call Modesto home.
Blake StewardGreat weather, farming, a vibrant
downtown, The State Theater, base-ball, awesome people, and all the cool cars…it reminds me of my Midwest roots.
Incentives to develop business, re-duce government regulation and taxes, and get peopleback to work; double-digit unemployment is not acceptable.

Kim CallizoI love Modesto for the very small town feel of it yet with all the culture! A
great summer night is hitting an early dinner on an outside patio at one of the downtown restaurants and then off to CIP where you can run into so many people you know and that you don't always see. I always think of the Cheers song, Some-time you want to go where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came. The older you get there's something to be said about that and to me that is a Classic American City!
The most important thing that needs to be done for Modesto is for our teenage population! Everyone talks about what a great place it is to come back to raise a family, but we need more activities and places for ourteens to go! We have got the 21 and over scene covered. No cruising for them like we did, which are some of my favorite teen memories in Modesto as I am sure for others, or heading to ski beach at Turlock Lake on the weekends
Mike MoradianWhy are we a Classic American City? I love the friendliness of Modestan’s,
MoBand at Graceada Park, 4 of July Parade…What is the most important thing we need to do to make Modesto even better?
Coordinate efforts between groups that help Modesto become better, like Love Modesto and "Taking it to the Streets" has done with beautifying Modesto.
roman wagner The vibrant local music scene!
Modesto is home to many great lo-cal bands and artists that are available to enjoy on a nightly basis. Modesto is also a fun-loving town, filled with people who are genuinely friendly, and happy to toast one another on every occasion! We have a vibrant night-life that has something to offer for everyone!
I believe Modesto has many great traditions that are already an intrinsic part of thecommunity. Expanding on these, and helping to create others, can bring the community rewards both ec-onomically and culturally. Civic and City Pride needs to be fostered and nurtured, so people's from all around will understand what a great city Modesto is!
Todd Aaronson I love the attitude of Modestans! Look at all we physically (not just finan-
cially) support - Airport Collaborative, Virginia Corridor, Love Modesto, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army Breakfast, Amgen Tour and much more. We thrive on volunteerism!
Stop worrying about what others think of us or lists we are not at the top of and concentrate on all that makes us good… then make those things GREAT! Then we'll tell the world!
Jessica SmartRaise a family, play/recreate year-
round, beautiful trees everywhere, unique dining downtown, yummy lo-cal and fresh produce and travel any-where you want.
Get involved. If you have an is-sue with something, then take action. Modesto is only as great as its resi-dents make it – own it, make it better, no excuses.

Lloyd GomezTweet #1: Modesto's community
continues to embrace a well known heritage; American Graffiti, which brings a positive perception to our city.
Tweet #2: I'm being biased here but I'd love to see a platform that high-lights Modesto's 'creative culture' An institute for architects, designers etc

Kate TrompetterThe art. The culture. The community. There is so much to celebrate about our
history and what we have made if it and amazing people to share it with.We need to treat Modesto better. Treat it like a friend, family member or part-
ner. Don’t say negative things about it and take pride in your relationship with it.
deborah SteinbergI love Modesto, because there is a
strong sense of community spirit here. In the Bay Area your friends are spread out over many towns, and it is likely you live in one town but commute to another, so you never have time to en-joy where you live. In Modesto people know their neighbors, and you can hard-ly go to a community event like "Con-certs in the Park" without running into everyone you know.
To make our community even better we need to focus on education and en-couraging others into making better life-style choices. More exercise opportuni-ties, and less fast food! Stay in school and learn a skill or go to college.
debra BradyDiverse, excellent music is heard
everywhere. Two degrees of separa-tion: generations of families have planted and invested themselves here. Community!
How could Modesto even be bet-ter?
The true measure of a city is how the most vulnerable citizens fair: Com-passionate healing for mental illness. Unemployed find productive, sustain-ing work.
Victoria KripnerI'm a Modesto native and have al-
ways loved this city. A city of amaz-ing people and contrasts... where small town village charm meets city chic hipster. Where agriculture, phil-anthropic hearts and youth sports harmonize with arts, entertainment and tattoos! You will always discover something new going on!
What can we do to make it bet-ter? Come together and work with our elected leaders, volunteer to help your neighbor, buy local and promote, promote, promote this great classic American city!
Chris ricciModesto has the best people on
earth, it’s the community itself that makes it special.
Improve public education. Re-duce drop out rate to 15% by 2016. Increasecollege grad rate to 20% by 2020.

Since 2000, XFest has been the huge summer party for Modesto. Our downtown streets have been home to over 100 stages, over 600 bands and nearly 200,000 party goers. August 6, at 5:00 pm, the gates will open on the 2012 XFest, featuring huge perfor-mances by Panic at the Disco, Moon-shine Bandits, DAM, Y&T, Jerimiah and so many more. 10 Stages, 50 bands and 15,000 of your closest friends will celebrate music and fun.
Lots of exciting new news as we roll up to show time Aug 6. There are new stages loaded with local bands like Lovecore, Hickory, Dandelion Mas-sacre and more and by Aug 6, there will be a comedy stage as well. XFest
will truly have something for everyone whether you want to eat, drink, dance or just listen and soak up the scene.
Key things to plan: Car pool, drink lots of water, park a few blocks away from XFest and walk. Bring your cam-era, your party attitude, and make sure XFest is a fun and safe night. Make it easy and get there early when the lines are short and just find a good place to hang. You will not regret it. Send us your fave XFest pics after the show and we will post them in ModestoView.com and use the best ones in our spe-cial XFest Rear View Mirror. Most importantly, stay safe and have a blast at XFest.

With all of this road training and fine tuning, they are having a "homecoming" show of sorts on August 26th at The Fat Cat. Rock 96.7 will be promoting the show and hopefully we can get some BLU music on the air for this “national tour-

Speaking of an amazing time, John Griswold’s Global Music Series delivered success with recent sold out show with Bra-zilian vocalist Fabiana Passoni. I recently received an email from Linda Balmer of Modesto and she ex-plained that she liked to “know some-one in the know in the Mo.” That was a nice thing for her to write. I’m glad to help.
So, August is August in Modesto. You know what I mean. We have a concert festival downtown on August 6th that you have probably read a thing or two about. It involves about 20,000 crazy music fans, about 100 porta-pot-ties and about 32,654 of Modesto’s fin-est police officers. And their guns. And their mace. Act appropriately. Be good humans.
The lineup this year is as hot as ever and there is something for everyone to enjoy. Check it out. Support Chris Ricci and his team of beer vendors and
bikini models. Good times! If you need a good laugh before X-
Fest, cruise by The Fat Cat the night before the big throw-down. Local pro-moter and awesome community ad-vocate, Issac Ames has put together a wild night of comedy featuring local comedians such as El Roberto and a whole posse of cow pokes and hustlers from outside of the area.
I will be performing. I will be funny. My set will be short. Come see me. If you don’t, I don’t get paid and I will have to be homeless. That is not funny at all. That is sad.
The show will be headlined by Dan R. Wilson of San Francisco and ac-cording to Ames, he is a very cool cat with some serious skill.
“Dan R. Wilson is a San Francisco
Bay Area comedian with a knack for relating to and engaging audiences,” said Ames. “Dan has been a finalist in the Improv Comedy Competition, the Killer Laughs Comedy Competition, and is a regular performer in comedy clubs and college campuses from Los Angeles to Alaska.”
Music fans can rejoice and celebrate throughout the month at The Copper Rhino. Their promoter, Jill Ferris is firing up an intense new local music series with a variety of acts from in-side and outside of The Valley. Count on local favorites such as Peaceable Jones and Nidiet and a whole slew of others. Everything including pop, alter-native, reggae and punk will be mixed in over the course of the series. There will be something new and special ev-ery week.

i am sitting here thinking about what on earth to write this month and i am pretty excited. it has been a while since someone told me that they were bored in town. that is good to hear. that is what our goal is with the Modestoview. we want you to be happy and have some fun!
If you’re anyone in the entertainment business in central valley, this name may sound familiar “Chris Ricci”. Chris is the General Manager of one of the original night clubs in Modesto Fat Cat Music House and Lounge. He is a member of the Entertainment Commission in Modesto and this man brings you X Fest every year, he is a partner in the MAMA awards, and VP of Big Time records and President of Chris Ricci presents and a parter in the Producing Group. This man has his hands in just about anything to do with music & entertainment. Fiesta Boyz had the opportunity to meet up with one busy man and here’s what he had to say.
FiestaBoyz: Thank you very much for taking time off your busy schedule
to allow us to Interview you. I un-derstand this is one of your biggest months when you bring X-Fest to town. Tell the readers the story how X-Fest came about and how many years it has been run-ning?Chris Ricci: This is our 12th year of X Fest. We started it in 2000 right after City Hall was rebuilt and Brenden Theater was finished. We thought the redevelopment was a green light for a new kind of entertainment downtown, so we rolled the dice. Aces!
FBZ: Who are the selected head lin-ers for X Fest?
CR: I think that really depends who you are. Many think that Panic! At the Disco is the headliner, others would pick Jeremih, and some might say Mr. Big, Dead Ken-
nedys, Frankie J or DJ Vice.

Ok…first of all this month I must touch on the biggest topic going around town thesedays. Metal bands at X-Fest!! For years metal bands were a no no when it came to X-Fest. Due to a certain incident at the State Theater that I’m not really allowed to speak of, metal bands have been exiled from Modesto’s biggest yearly music festival but those days have hopefully faded away. This year there is the Sin-Cal Industries “Rock” stage that is mostly populated my local Modesto Area Heavy Metal bands!! This is a major victory for all of us in the local metal scene and people that normally pass on X-Fest due to the bands that are booked are now finding themselves seeking tickets to this mas-sive event. We applaud Chris Ricci for recognizing metal as a valuable part of the local music scene.

In other news this month I must address an Issue…All Ages Venues for Metal bands. Well it has happened again. Shows at The Melody Ballroom at King Kabob are in danger of being shut down. The Clarion Inn refused to host Thrashocalypse in their venue room in August due to “The type of music and the type of people it will bring” unless you rent the parking lot, which includes massive fees and pay for several MPD officers and their vehicles. Listen, I am using this forum to speak to the public. Teenage Kids in Modesto that love Met-al need a place to go and support their bands and friends that are in local bands. I get emails from kids every day beg-ging for a place they can hang out that isn’t strictly 21+. Every time we get a venue it is shutdown within six months. If you know of a place that would al-low kids that wanna buy your pizza or whatever you have to offer to hang out please let me know. Metal kids are not a bad element. For the most part they
are a very respectful group of kids that are very passionate about what they love and that is metal. We applaud places like The Maddux Youth Center and the

Barbara is no stranger to running, in fact she has been running for 33 years and has been a proud member of The Shadow Chase Running Club since 1996. So perhaps you’re think-ing, OK two runs in one day, placing 2nd Cool! But not far out of the norm for a true runner. But what makes Barbara a Dynamo in my book is that when most folks her age think of run-ning, it’s generally about running to the nearest drug store for their medica-tions in their car. Modesto View Read-ers, Barbara will be 67 years old this year, Like I said, Dynamo! Perhaps, you might have seen Barbara running around Modesto because she runs daily and prefers to run outside all year long no matter what season. Barbara runs about 80 miles a week with a minimum of 10 miles a day to get herself ready for her weekend runs/races ranging 16-20 miles with a grand total of about 400 miles per month, every month, 12 months a year. Dynamo! Or, as Jay-Jay from the 1970’s Good Times TV Show would say, “Dy-No-Mite!” So, perhaps you’re thinking about mobility and how can she be 66 years old and run-ning for 33 years. She must wake up as stiff as a board and tired.
Modesto View readers; a body in motion stays in motion. Barbara started running in her 30’s and has kept with it. It’s helped her keep her mobility and a healthy weight. Barbara pretty much eats whatever she wants and her pre-ferred types of food are carbohydrates such as pasta, breads, and pizza. Her all time favorite dish at any meal is desert. As a runner, Barbara is able to enjoy so much good food without gaining any weight and she’s healthier than the av-erage women in her age group. Heck, in her age decade! I asked Barbara what she enjoys most about running? Her answer, “The Endorphin Release! When I’m done, I have more energy to teach my class and work out afterwards at the MJC gym.”
Barbara is a long distance racer/run-ner, in fact she tells me that it takes her a least 5 miles just to warm up. This would explain why she loved running The Western States 100 Mile Endur-ance Run in 2005 at the age of 60. Fin-ishing in 29 hours 36 minutes and how she recently qualified for The Boston
Marathon as a Super in the 2010 Sur-gical Artistry Modesto Marathon with a time of 4 hours 45 minutes. I asked Barbara, what advice would you give our young readers out there on fitness and how to adopt a healthy lifestyle? “Make time! Don’t try to do so much too soon; give yourself 3 months to es-tablish an exercise routine, your body will let you know what’s good for you as far as exercising as well as eating a healthy diet”
In conclusion, I asked Barbara to share a few words in fitness with our masters 50 plus age division. “Being Active is Normal! Just do it whatever it is and get moving! I recommend walk-ing as a good start to keep your bones dense and strong. Also weight-bearing activity prevents problems down the line and will help prevent osteoporosis. Being active is normal; Get Yourself Moving!”
Quake Note:The Shadow Chase Club Running
Club now has a walking group all levels welcomed and I invite you all to come out to the August 13, 2011 - V.I.P.S. Keep Moving Forward 10k Run & 5k Run/Walk, in Riverbank. Last year I place 1st in my age division and 2nd over all. This year I will take no pris-oners to claim 1st over all. Come out and show me how it’s done and try to de-throne me at the winner’s circle. For more information on this run as well as the shadow chase walking group please contact the nice folks at the shadow chase running club at there website www.shadowchase.org/

I’ve often said, a body in motion stays in motion. that’s a huge understatement for Barbara elia. the woman is a Dynamo! I was first impressed with Barbara about a year ago when I saw her trail running in Modesto after racing a 5k race! in fact, at our last race together, she raced the Park fete 10k in the morning fallowed by a jog afterwards only to keep herself loose for the davis half Marathon she had planned to race later that night. she placed 2nd in both races in her age division.

Hi my name is Jill Ferris. I guess I am a promoter but lets just say I orga-nize shows so you can hear great local music like songs listed below. There is so much local music talent and I get asked frequently about what songs are the best to listen to. So I have compiled some of my favorites. There’s no hid-den tracks or only live songs or unre-leased, so you can easily find them and hear for yourself. Buy local music and support our local bands.
NideitStay Home
Nideit is a long time favorite of mine. If you are into melodic punk at all this is definitely the band for you. I also hear they have some new material so my suggestion would be to find a live show. They never disappoint. http://www.myspace.com/nideit.
We The SameLeading the Heart Attack
Only a year old and these guys are rocking the scene! I really think that Modesto has needed a band like this for quite a while. They got that "IT" factor that every great pop/ rock band should have. Girls can't help but sway their hips and guys rock out. Definitely a must see band!! http://www.reverbna-tion.com/wethesame OPPORTUNITY ALERT: Aug 26th at Copper Rhino.
IrieTide Reef
I got such a soft spot for reggae and wow to have these guys apart of the Modesto scene, right here in our backyard! This is one of those songs you can't help but smile while you are listening. http://www.facebook.com/irietide?sk=app178091127385 OPPORTUNITY ALERT: Sept 9 at Copper Rhino.
Roy DeanSweet Something
Great Folk artist! Roy is not only a great listen but very entertaining to watch. On top of all that he is a very talented tattoo artist who owns his own shop right here in Modesto called Bound For Glory.http://www.reverbna-tion.com/roydeanOPPORTUNITY ALERT: Oct 7th at Copper Rhino
City PsychologyPast Due
Indie/ pop band with a very energet-ic live show! One of my favorite bands to watch do their thing. Never disap-pointed! http://www.myspace.com/cit-ypsychology OPPORTUNITY ALERT: Sept 9 at The Copper Rhino.
French CassettesMouth Drum
This was such a hard song to choose, they have so many good ones! This one is off their new album called Summer Darling. I finally settled on this song because it reminds me of one of those perfect summer jams. If you have not seen this band you are seriously miss-ing out, these guys know how to put on a show! I am mesmerized every time! http://www.myspace.com/frenchcas-settes.
American Made OutlawDrunk Bastards
This is the punk band you need to know about! I love them, very enter-taining and great guys! http://www.myspace.com/americanmadeoutlaw
Tragic CultureCreatures
Wow talk about a power house rock band! If you have not seen them you are missing out! They got the look, the sound and the energy. I really do not know what else to say other than check them out! http://www.myspace.com/tragicculturemusic.
I really hope you enjoy what you hear. Modesto is so full of talent I am so happy to be apart of it. The show series that I am booking called The Weekly Is-sue (every Friday night at the Copper Rhino on 10th st) will proudly give the stage to everyone of these bands in the weeks to come so like us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/theweek-lyissue for more information and if you bring a copy of this issue to the door any Friday in the month of August you will get in 1/2 off! Don't be a stranger, hope to see you soon!
Jill is a local music and event promoter and does a great job keeping the local bands front and center, matching them up with national touring acts and networking them in to local clubs. Jill has worked with b92.9 and the MaMa awards to make sure local bands get star treatment. this month, she highlights music that you need to hear.

Dressing up should not be limited to fancy parties or special events. Life should be celebrated everyday; and what better way to celebrate then dress-ing up and making yourself feel like a million bucks? It is obvious that our emotions and feelings radiate to our outer selves, but sometimes we need an extra boost on the outside to maximize our confidence on the inside. Jewelry is one thing that makes me feel special the instant I put it on and I add it into my daily ensemble to get that extra special addition for an overall complete look.
I was fortunate enough to meet local Jewelry Designer, Kim Klingborg, on a jewelry shoot for her business Spell-bound Fashions. Before the shoot I was able to speak to Kim regarding some details of her jewelry business. Kim has been interested in how jewelry was made since she was a little girl. She majored in Fashion Design in college and has always loved being able to find vintage jewelry pieces, experimenting with their settings, and interchanging precious stones to create a one of a kind piece of jewelry. By adding layers of crystals, pearls, and/or chains to some of her pieces, she is able to transform an original piece into a masterpiece. These elegant, semi formal, and casual pieces can be easily added to an everyday out-fit for a perfect special addition.
Although, you can find some Spell-bound Fashions jewelry pieces at some local vintage art festivals and boutiques in the Stanislaus and Merced counties, she recommends having an in home jewelry party. Kim will travel all over
Northern California for in home jew-elry parties and she prefers the in home parties because she is able to connect more with her clients and personalize the pieces specifically for them. She loves being challenged and is able to create custom made pieces, add or change pieces depending on her cli-ent's needs and tastes. With in home jewelry parties clients are able to see and hold the high end quality jewelry pieces and make their purchases right-there. However, some of us like to shop with the extreme convenience of on-line shopping. Spellbound Fashions is now offering purchases right through Facebook. If you are a facebook user go check out their fan page Spellbound Fashions and if you click the “like” but-ton you will receive 10% off your order online on facebook. Yes, facebook is now offering a “shop now” link on the right side of business fan pages so you can shop directly from their facebook page. Don'thave a facebook account? That's fine, because purchases can also be made through their website www.spellboundfashions.com (it will bring you to the facebook page, but you don't need a facebook account to order this way). I am ready to start my next girl's night out with a Spellbound Fashions Jewelry Party and what I don't end up getting that day I will make sure my husband knows exactly what I'm wish-ing for from Spellbound Fashions.

as august rolls around and all the young people start getting excited and ready to start school again, us parents need to celebrate too. with summer ending and school beginning consider having an end of summer gathering, fun date night, or girl's night out with your closest friends. dress up and go enjoy the warm and beautiful weather while the hot august nights surround us.

Needless to say we have plenty. You can see a full list of the bands at xfest-modesto.com (and on Page 17)
FBZ: Now let’s talk more about you. Currently you are VP of Big Time Re-cords, tell us about your position on the label?CR: I mainly work with the label on the strategic and creative sides. We have several acts currently signed including Seven Day Sonnet from Chicago, Princess Die, and Dazeafter. Seven Day Sonnet is being actively promoted on Active rock with a current chart position of #42 and touring with Sick Puppies, Seven dust and Pop Evil.
FBZ: Has being a major part of Modesto History driven you to continue your work? Who are your inspirations?CR: I think that the thing that drives me the most is a fear of failure. I re-ally hate to lose. Ask my wife when we play Gin Rummy. I will continue working until things work. If I work hard and fail I know I gave it all I had and then I can relax easier. Probably my biggest inspiration in the music business is Ken Phebus. He was my boss when I worked my first real music
business job at the Coach House down in San Juan Capistrano. I remember waiting the whole day just to try to get a few minutes with him to talk about booking bands. It seemed like he had booked everyone, Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews, Johnny Cash, Tina Turner, nearly every icon I could think of had played for Ken one time or another. I really wanted to do that. Today I work with Ken on my other company The Producing Group, LLC. We are cur-rently producing some festival events at the Queen Mary in Long Beach. You can check it out at http://www.shore-linejamqm.com.
FBZ: Do you see our city growing or going backward in 2011 when it comes to entertainment & music?CR: I think it is hard to give it a direction. The good news is that the Modesto music scene is truly estab-lished. You have different genres and support systems for the bands that have formed over the past 15 years. You have promoters that have special-ized like Mike Vanek and his hard rock shows at Spinnakers and Greg Edward’s Off the Air Shows at Deva. The Gallo Center is really embracing
the community with events like Val-ley’s Got Talent. The Mama Awards have never been stronger. We also can’t forget that Chris Murphy brought ModestoView back. The challenge that faces the music community is no different than the challenge facing the public schools and local government. Our community needs to put people back to work and focus on educating the people that live here. When that happens there will be the opportunity for more people to explore their passions like music. If you are a musician that is trying to live your dream, it’s easier to do when you can afford guitar strings and gas.
FBZ: Do you have any advice for the readers and up and coming acts in the music business?CR: If your dream is to be in the music business then get in the music business. Pick a job you like and start doing it. Manage a band, book bands at a coffee house or bar, write about bands, make music videos, or if you play an instru-ment, take a run at starting a group. Once you have taken that first step keep at it. It takes years to develop the skills that it takes to really get into the
business. If you take the first 3 years of my career my total income was less than $10K a year and I worked 60-80 hours a week. I wanted experience. Once I had it I was able to spin it into jobs that generated a more reasonable income. If you have a job or go to school, do it in your spare time until you can make the jump. If you really want to be in the business, the key is to invest time, effort, and passion. When you start seeing achievement, it begins to get easier to take the next step. No band or music executive gains success in 18 months, it’s a many year invest-ment. However, once you get there you’ll never have to sit in a cubicle again.
Work Shop in Ceres for embracing our metal kids in Modesto. If you can help us at all please drop a line on my face-book www.facebook.com/mike.vanek or on our 209Productions fan page.
That’s it for me this month. Keep one Foot In The Gutter.and
