“Stellaluna”by Janell Cannon

We choose story book untitled “Stellaluna” by Janell Cannon .This is story is a modern

fantasy type which is suitable for Year 5 and similar to the topic nit !! " The #nsect

#n$esti%ation” in &SS' syllabus .(ccordin% to )rown*C.+ , Tomlinson*C.-*modern fantasy

refers to the body of literature in which the e$ents *the settin%s *or the characters are outside

the realm possibility. #n this story also *the animals talk *inanimate obects come to life and

more .

Synopsis

#n this story* Stellaluna is a baby bat separated from her mother and raised by a mother bird*

on the condition that she acts as birds do" sleep at ni%ht* don/t han% upside down* and eat

worms and insects. Thou%h she doesn/t like beha$in% in this way* Stellaluna a%rees and tries

to pro$e she fits in with the birds. When she meets a %roup of bats one day* Stellaluna is

reunited with her mother* who teaches her how bats are supposed to beha$e. Stellaluna tries

to show her bird friends how to be bats* but reali0es that they are better at ust bein%

birds* much as she is better at bein% a bat. 1espite their differences* Stellaluna and the baby

birds remain %reat friends.

Author

Self2tau%ht artist and writer Janell Cannon has always admired animals* especially creatures

that ha$e been misunderstood or ne%lected. 3er lo$e of bats* spiders* &omodo dra%ons* and

snakes inspired her work at a public library* where she de$eloped award2winnin% summer

readin% pro%rams about these unusual animals. While conductin% research for a pro%ram

about bats* Janell found only two books on the subect* both out of print. She decided it was

time to make her own story about these wonderful creatures.

Physical Features



The physical features that had the book is that the si0e of the book is $ery bi% .#t is !4cm

len%th. #t use hard co$er and e$ery pa%es ha$e picture after the narrator of the story.The

fonts si0e is nor bi% or small and readable to the reader. $ery pa%es use hard paper.

Character

The characters in this story are $ery interestin%. The main character is shown by Stellaluna

*the baby bat .#n this story the character demonstrate the difficulty of assimilation . Stellaluna

is force to adapt the way birds li$e as she had lose her mother bat.She faces many

difficulties when en%a%in% her new life style but she does not %i$e up as she ha$e no others

options. She feels the need to surpass the e6pectations her foster mother sets for the bird

babies* in order to pro$e that she is ust as %ood as them. Stellaluna/s trials of fittin% into the

lifestyle of the birds* as well as her attempts to teach her bird friends how bats li$e*

demonstrate the $alue of understandin% one/s own herita%e* and not tryin% to conform to an

unnatural way of life.

Content(Language level,Structure,Vocabulary

(part from that* the choice of the word is the other reasons we choose this story .The story

use simple words and it is suitable to introduce a new $ocabulary. 7or e6ample* sultry*

clutched* awful and many more .The content of the story contain the life style of birds and bat

which are different. (t here* the students is introduce with the characteristic in a bat that the

birds does not ha$e e$en they ha$e the some similar characteristic indirectly usin% the

story .This story also can pro$ide some information to the reader that some that bat eat fruits

and not blood.

Visual and !llustration

)esides* the $isuals and the illustration of the story are $ery important in selectin% a story for

youn% learner .#n this story* the pictures display is $ery interestin% and colourful. (ccordin% to

+oukia*89:;;<=* illustration support the learner better in understandin% where the meanin% of

word in the te6t .The picture are also closely related to the te6t *sometimes they e$en

structure the te6t accordin% to the storyline .7or e6ample *”Stellaluna landed headfirst at the



soft downy nest”9 the picture illustrate Stellaluna landed upside down *head inside the nest

and only feet is drawn=

Moral values

This story also implies moral $alue that the students can learn .>ne of the moral $alue that

we can learn that e$ery we ha$e to make best of the situation and %rew stron% .1espite that*

Stellalula had apart from her real mother and li$e with a $ery different family like her own*

she able to follow and adapt the situations .$en the mother bird realise that Stellaluna is a

bit different than them but she does not treat Stellaluna badly .We can adapt this moral $alue

to the students where we can relate the situation in the classroom where e$ery students

ha$e different characteristic such as hair *eyes* hei%ht and more but despite all thisdifferences they can still be friends like Stellaluna how still be friends with the baby birds

e$en after she found her own mother.

We would like to recommend the author to use interestin% pictures .7or e6ample* we found

that the picture of the bat is a little bit scary and maybe the author could choose the pictures

with a friendly pictures that is less scary.
