At Iittala, we strive for lasting design against throwawayism. More simply put, design so timeless it will never be thrown away. But how did we so fearlessly arrive to this thought? We were ultimately guided by our Scandinavian heritage, dedication to craftsmanship and pioneering designers. As a result, we create objects for you and your home that are forever relevant, pleasing to the senses and fit any task. True modern essentials.

The roots of Iittala date back to 1881 when a glass factory was established in a village of the same name in southern Finland. Our breakthrough came in the early years of modernism and functionalism during the 1930s and 40s. We were one of the fi rst companies to make the transition from decorative dinner sets to progressive Scandinavian design.

Some of Iittala’s early designers include the modernist trailblazers Kaj Franck, Alvar Aalto and Aino Aalto. They believed objects should be essential, crafted, beautiful, functional and democratically available to all. Today, whether it’s applied to glass or ceramic, interior objects or cookware, those beliefs have not changed. They continue to inspire our thinking and drive the brand forward. We know there are people all over the world who agree with us. We hope that you will be one of them.

Iittala is dedicated to maintaining traditional craftsmanship values in an ever-changing world. For instance, the Alvar Aalto and Birds collections continue to be mouth-blown in our glassworks – all the way from fine sand to polished jewel. They are design icons that along with the Ambient Light collection are designed in close cooperation with the designers and craftsmen to endure and surpass any trend.
